How did you get that beautiful skin tone? I'm wanting to start and Alien/Prometheus themed Tyranid army and thats the perfect skin tone for the units. :) |

If that's what you want then it's really simple :) They're just white undercoat with a wash. The bottom left Genestealer is Agrax Earthshade, the bottom right Hormagaunt was Devlan Mud, the top left Stealer is a mix of 3 parts Agrax to 1 part Nuln Oil, the top right stealer is 3 parts Agrax to 5 parts Nuln Oil. Spray the undercoat on, as it'll give a more consistent and solid coat for the wash, and make sure you wait for it to fully dry or else the wash will soak in to the undercoat instead of in to the crevices. Apply the wash thick and heavy with a large brush (I used a 1cm square head brush).
For these models, that was it! If you want a skin tone similar to my other images, for the large monsters and important things I did Devlan Mud over white undercoat followed by layer of a Deneb Stone/Bleached Bone mix (pure Deneb is duller, pure Bleached bone is more yellowish). |

Awesome! Thank you got sharing that with me. :) I've decided to start a Tyranid army, and I've worked on various ideas for a paint job. I'm almost committed to a Prometheus-style paint job, and the wash pretty much matches what I had in mind. Its much closer to what I want then my trouble-shooting efforts. I was going to use black with grey stippling for the carapaces.
However, I've also considered using blues, reds, and greens to add color, which is very un-Prometheus-like. However, adding colors would make Retro Ymgarls and Hive Tyrants, and Zerg Painted Raveners fit in a bit better. I'm a big fan of retro designs, and I kinda like my miniatures to reflect that.
So if I post pictures and I stole your paint scheme, I guess don't take to much offense? :P What you've posted looks fantastic. It makes me want to do a little bit of hive-minding. |
