Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Release: August, 2011 (Xbox360, PS3 and PC)

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (also known as WH40k: Space Marine) is a third-person action-RPG video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ. It is scheduled to be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The game casts players as Captain Titus of the Ultramarine chapter of the Space Marines, one of humanity's last hopes in an intergalactic war against the sinister Orks. Players are charged with defending an Imperial Forge World from the Orkish invasion, a task made more complicated when the forces of Chaos make their presence known.

"As the barbaric Orks rip the planet apart, it's up to you and your battle-hardened squad of Space Marines to cut a bloody path through the Ork horde and discover what they're so eager to find" (official site)

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising

Release: March 2010 (PC)

Genre: Tactical RTS

This expansion for Dawn of War II saw the inclusion of Chaos as an opponent in the campaign and a playable faction for multiplayer, as well as a system of corruption to show wether the Blood Ravens under your command were remaining pure to the light of the God Emporer or if they had began a decent into the madness of Chaos.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Release: 2008 (PC)

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is a real-time strategy/tactical role-playing video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ for Microsoft Windows based on the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe.

The campaign, unlike previous Dawn of War titles, is based on the management of a handful of squads during a fight rather than an entire army. Each squad has a special character sargeant who is knocked unconcious when his squad dies and then must be revived by another squad. These sargeants can be equipped with wargear found during the campaign or recieved as rewards from missions. Wargear improves stats and enables special abilities and traits.

Playable armies at the initial release of the game include the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids.

On October 14 2009 Relic released a free downloadable content pack (as part of their 1.8.0 patch) for Dawn of War II, called The Last Stand. Players take control of either a Space Marine Captain, an Eldar Farseer or an Ork Mekboy, and co-operate with two other players in order to take on waves of AI controlled units. With the release of The Chaos Rising expansion pack the Chaos Sorcerer and Hive Tyrant are now available.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm

Release: 2008 (PC)

Genre: RTS

GamesRadar.com Review

Soulstorm adds two new armies to Dawn of War: Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar. Each race also receives a flying unit. Just like Dark Crusade, Soulstorm is a standalone expansion that limits you to playing Dark Eldar or Sisters of Battle in online multiplayer games. To use the other races in online multiplayer games, you must have purchased the other versions of the game.

The campaign map adds new special scenarios, new bonus sectors, and a new expanded feel as armies struggle to control warp gates that lead to other planets.

Warhammer: Mark of Chaos

Release: 2006 (PC, Xbox360)

Genre: RTS

The game, according to the developers, is a game "focusing on the armies and battles while de-emphasizing the tedious aspects of base and resource management". Set in the Warhammer Old World, the player can command one of 4 armies from the tabletop game.

The gameplay is primarily focused on battlefield tactics, thus not featuring RTS gameplay aspects like base-building, resource harvesting or in-battle unit production. Instead, the gameplay is intended to be focused on high fantasy/late medieval battles. Its gameplay is superficially similar to its predecessors and the Total War games; however, the basic game play model is significantly more simplified, and battles are more similar to real-time strategy games like Warcraft III than other real-time tactics titles.

The objective for each battle is defeat of the enemy army by either completely destroying it or causing the remaining units to flee off the battlefield. Battles are fought on a variety of landscapes and settings, with specific terrain types granting bonuses or penalties to units. Units also have morale, and will break and flee if they suffer enough damage or get hit by specific types of weaponry, and stamina, which will cause them to lose defense and speed when sufficiently drained.

The basic troop type present in the game is a "unit" which is anything from 1 to 96 "models" depending on the type of unit. The control system is similar to the Total War and Dawn of War in that each unit is given orders as a single entity. As well as standard orders you are also able to arrange your units into a number of formations, with each formation conferring advantages against specific kinds of attacks. Units will also gain experience over the course of a battle or campaign and will gain improved statistics and more models.

On the Xbox360 this game is called Warhammer: Battle March

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

Release: 2006 (PC)

Genre: RTS

GamesRadar.com Review

Dark Crusade is the second expansion for the Dawn of War real-time-strategy game. It introduced the Necrons and the Tau Empire as playable races, new units for the five previously released races, and a non-linear map campaign.

You do not need the original Dawn of War to play Dark Crusade, except to play as the older races (Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Chaos Space Marines) in online multiplayer matches.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Winter Assault

Release: 2005 (PC)

The player is allowed to chose at the start of the campaign to use the Forces of Order (Imperial Guard, Eldar, Space Marines) and the Forces of Disorder (Orks, Chaos Space Marines). The Necrons make an appearance in the very last level of both campaigns and must be destroyed by the player.
