Mercer's Blood Angels - The Red Fleas

Full Army Photo

Unit Photos

HQ

Librarian

This Librarian already had a hammer on the model when I brought it. I was planning on cutting off the hammer head and adding a falchion blade to make it into some wicked spear or something. A lot of people said how cool the hammer looks and still can be a force weapon, so I left it.

Honour Guard

I've been thinking about switching the meltaguns and melta bombs to plasma guns. I've found that once the Devastators are gone, then my Fleas have little ranged fire power. The plasma guns should give some range and also deal with elite units and monstrous creatures more effectively.

Painting Technique

All models (except Librarians) were given two coats of mechrite red. Details were then picked out i.e iyaden darksun for helmets. Metal colours and helmets were washed gryphonne sepia and the red with baal red. Highlights were done with codex grey, golden sun, blood red and ice blue.

Bases were done with sand and pva, then painted skorched brown then flock to break up the brown and add colour.

Tactics

I always prefer first turn with this army so I can get into range/assault as quickly as possible. I'll deploy as far forward as possible with melta units at the front, Honour Guard inbetween them so the melta units flank each side. Then behind the meltas the flamer units. Librarians and Priests attach to flamer units as these units are the close combat units. This way all units are in shield, furious charge and feel no pain bubbles (6"). In objective games I place one objective as close to my table edge as possible, near the Devastators, in all games (including kill points) Scouts stay in reserve and then will walk in. This way the Scouts hold the objective and have Devastators to support them if deseperate. If the Scouts ever get shot at they go to ground for a 2+ cover save. The remaining objectives I will place in the centre of the board as I am going that way anyway and can easily jump and run back to claim them.

Typically melta units will for go vehicles with light infantry in or tough armour while the flamer units attack infantry only. Honour Guard will slag tough armour i.e Land Raiders or tackle elite infantry. Elite infantry can be a issue for this army, so I gang up units onto the enemy units, so two or three Assault Squads onto a single Terminator unit for example, usually two are fine.

In most cases the Blood Angels will act 'berzerker' style and go for anything. Reason is when they assault they tend to win thanks to furious charge and feel no pain along with preferred enemy thanks to unleash rage. This will catapult them up the field after they win combat. Just remember to keep them in fnp and shield range at all times ;) .

Why I Started This Army

Blood Angels was my first army. When I got the Battle for Macragge set my missus painted the Marines red and I just went with that. I stopped Blood Angels for a bit and went onto Ultramarines and Imperial Fists. About nine months after the Blood Angel codex came out I went back to them. I do run a Razorback list, which was my returning Blood Angel list, though a jumper list was my original idea and what I used previously.
