Strike of the Eagles

The irony of it pleased Ignax. The green-skinned xenos were on the defensive, holed up from the numerous batteries and assaults from the Eagles Sanguine. Ignax, a sergeant, was leading his 4-man assault squad into battle aboard the Blood Templar, an Aquila-pattern Thunderhawk. From the view hatch, Ignax could make out Brother Azzkor's Razorback. Azzkor was another sergeant, and a close friend of Ignax's. His Devastator Squad was there to make sure the orks did not get too out of hand, and was equipped with two lascannons and three heavy bolters. They were also there to make sure that there were no vehicles to get in the way of the assault.

"Coming up on Drop Point Alpha." The words were relayed to Ignax through the vox-com, from TechMarine Krathius, who was the current pilot of the Blood Templar. "Prepare to drop." Ignax held up his fist, as it was too noisy in the bay of the Thunderhawk for his squad to hear him. Affirmatives relayed back to him through his helmet screen. A message flashed from Azzkor: Get ready. The bay door of the Thunderhawk opened. Ignax held up his hand again, this time with three oustretched fingers. He counted down. As soon as he closed his fist, the squad jumped. The air was filled with the roar of wind and the stench of burning fuel. He found the drop sight, and relayed the coordinates to each of his men. Again, everyone responded affirmative.

Krathius looked down, and saw that Squad Ignax had just targeted an ork patrol, a little less than 25 boyz. Almost feeling emotion at the coming annihilation of the xenos, He changed coordinates and piloted the Thunderhawk back up to the orbiting battle cruiser.

Grawk looked up, and saw red and gold angels come out of the sky on wings of fire. He called out an alarm signal: "UMIIIEEES!!!!!" By the time the rest of the orks in his patrol had looked up, it was too late.

Ignax landed with the loud WHUMP of armour on packed sand. He looked to his left, and saw a horde of somewhere between twenty and thirty ork boyz charging towards him. He raised his bolt pistol.

Grawk looked around, leading the charge of his boyz, 24 in number, against the gleaming giant. The space marine raised his bolt pistol, and fired. Grawk felt a slug slam into his forehead with a tremendous amount of force. It was the last thing he would ever know.

Ignax watched the ork boy's head explode, raining blood down upon the other boyz. A fragment of skull bounced off of his armour with a loud PING. He drew his chainsword, and, thumbing the activation switch, ran towards the boyz.

As Ignax lunged into the boyz, he swung his chainsword. He felt it slam up against a tough, leather-like material, and knew he had hit ork flesh. He ground deeper, the blade rending into the ork's muscle. With an almighty push, the blade clove through the boy's spine and came out the other side, drenched in arterial fluids. Ignax stabbed once more, the blade ripping through the frontal skull of another ork. Brains, mixed with blood, rose into the air in torrents from the skull of the unfortunate greenskin. He felt the ground shake underneath him, and knew his brothers had come to his side. The crack of bolt pistol firing and the roar of chainsword sounded as if it could have been heard for miles as Ignax and his squad hacked and shot the ork boyz to pieces.

After the battle, Azzkor arrived at the coordinates of the skirmish. He praised Squad Ignax on its good work annihilating the xenos. He gave Ignax word of a transmission he had recieved from the scout squad sent ahead of Azzkor and Ignax: The reckoning was at hand. The scout had relayed the coordinates of the ork camp back to Azzkor, and, as it turned out, Squads Ignax and Azzkor were both near a bluff overlooking the the greenskin base. They decided what they had to do, and relayed the message back to TechMarine Krathius of the attack.

As the squads reached the bluff, they peered over and saw the ork encampment. Hundreds of greenskin, what remained of Waaagh Killatoof, was accompanied by two Killa Kans. The plan was simple, yet elegant: Since most of the remains of the Waaagh was boyz, Ignax, as the appointed force commander, would relay back the coordinates of the encampment to TechMarine Krathius, who was aboard and in command of the Blood Regalius, a battle cruiser in orbit above Carnaeus IV, a desert planet holding the small Eagles Sanguine force, along with the ork Waaagh. Using these coordinates, Krathius would send down a small orbital bombardment consisting of a plasma strike, a bombardment specially designed by Krathius himself. These bombardments would be used to open up a pocket in the middle of the ork horde. Squad Ignax would then, using jump packs, rocket themselves into this pocket. Whilst fighting the hordes, Azzkor and his squad would use the lascannons to take out the Killa Kans, and the heavy bolters to bring down swathes of infantry.

Ignax relayed the coordinates needed for the orbital strike back to Krathius. "Prepare the execution."

A projectile the size of a drop pod rocketed out of the sky and slammed into the midst of the orks, kicking up a cloud of sand.

An intense burst of heat, a blinding flash of light, the smell of burning flesh, a loud thump, and an acrid taste defined the explosion. When the dust cleared, a pocket of orks had been completely annihilated, burnt to ashes by the explosive. The only thing that suggested that the orks had not just moved into a position with a central pocket was a field of glass, sand which had been superheated and solidified by the explosion of plasma. "Go!" Ignax yelled, and the assault squad rocketed up, away from the bluff, and slammed into the center of the glass sea. The orks, at first confused by the explosion, were now confused doubly so by the space marines in their midst. Squad Ignax charged, each one charging a different side of the enclosing Waaagh.

Wukk, the only kommando nob left, in fact, the only nob left in the ork horde, crept up behind the space marines squad. The first to go went silently, a knife in his back.

Azzkor gave an order to his squad members: lascannons concentrate on the Killa Kans, heavy bolters, on the boyz.

As Ignax charged a large mob of boyz, he felt the earth shake beneath him. The sergeant looked around, and saw a Killa Kan. It reached for him with its two arms, both of which ended in saw blades. Ignax knew this was his end, but he would not go withough a fight. He took out his bolt pistol, and took aim at where he thought the xenos pilot would be in the filthy machine.

Markoss, a lascannon-wielding devastator, sighted a Killa Kan and drew a bead.

Ignax shot his bolt pistol.

Markoss squeezed the trigger of the giant weapon.

Ignax's bullet hit the Killa Kan at the exact same time as the lascannon shot. Both projectiles collided with the greenskin war-machine, and the vehicle exploded.

Ignax ducked from shrapnel, and realised what had happened. He looked up, and saw a member of Azzkor's squad standing with a smoking lascannon. Ignax made a mental note to remember to thank his brother after the battle ended. He turned, and saw an ork boy running towards him. Once more triggering his chainsword, Ignax charged into battle.

Markoss felt something sharp stab into his back, right before his whole world went black.

Wukk pulled his knife out of the back of the Devastator marine, and, getting the last one into a headlock, severed his head with the serrated blade. Putting the knife back into its sheath on his shoulder, Wukk roared at the sky, and threw the severed head into the air.

Something large and almost cylindrical hit the ground beside Ignax and the slain greenskin. At first, he thought it was a stikkbomm, a crudely built ork hand grenade. He picked it up, and, preparing to throw it back, realized it was no explosive.

Ignax looked into the eyes of his closest friend once more. The only difference was, now the head of Azzkor was not attached to a body, but in Ignax's hand.

Ignax felt an emptiness inside him, one which he knew could be filled by slaying the hideous creatures that had taken the life of his comrade and fellow sergeant. He roared and charged into battle with the xenos filth.

Pressing the activation switch, Ignax clove an arm from an ork boy. A crimson rain filled the air around him as the boy fell to the ground writhing in pain. Ignax parried the knife of another ork boy, a crude cleaver, and, as the ork stepped back stunned by the power behind the sergeant's block, Ignax stabbed deep into the greenskin's chest. More fluids flew from the wound, the whirring chains moving and turning the boy's insides to mush. As Ignax drew his blade from the ork's torso, the wounded boy gasped his last breath, choking on his own blood. Ignax, in all his rage, had forgotten to keep track of his battle-brothers. As he looked at the symbols in his helmet viewport, he realized that he was the only one left alive, alone and surrounded by xenos that would slaughter him without mercy. The other Killa Kan, not yet destroyed, lurched towards Ignax. The boyz stepped back to see how this angel of death, with wings of fire and a chainsword that had reaped the lives of many members of their Waaagh, would handle this smoke-belching mechanical creation of war.

Ignax, knowing this crusade on Carnaeus IV would now be his death, decided to end it nobly. He charged, straight at the Killa Kan, and mentally activated his jump pack through a port in the back of his head that connected with his armor through a series of cables. As he was rocketing towards the vehicle, Ignax held his chainsword, chains still spinning, out in front of him. He stabbed straight into the boxy chest of the Killa Kan, impaling the ork inside upon his blade. As he pulled it out, blood gushed from the opening Ignax's sword had made in the greenskin machination.

Ignax landed on the sandy ground, the hundred or so orks around him yelling and roaring in outrage.

"SILENCE!!!!" demanded a raspy and mechanical, yet still booming, voice that came from behind Ignax. The sergeant dared not to turn, dreading what was behind him that could create that kind of noise. When the orks failed to give in to this command, a titanic barrage of shells screamed over and around Ignax. Left and right, the shells hit ork boyz and detonated, the unlucky greenskins exploding in blood and bone. "Brother-Sergeant Ignax, TechMarine Krathius thought you might need reinforcements in your fight," the same voice rasped. As Ignax turned, he saw a Dreadnought, decorated with the colors and banner of the Eagles Sanguine, autocannon barrels still rotating slowly, standing tall behind him. Ignax knew now that this was not his death, but the death of Killatoof and his Waaagh.

Ignax once more charged into battle with the orks. This time, however, was different. This time, Ignax was fighting with an ally at his back, one that would not be overcome in the heat of battle. As he turned, he saw an ork boy slice at him with a crudely built chainsword. Angered that a xenos would even dare make such a mockery of a holy messenger of the Emperor's will, Ignax retaliated with a brutal slice, cleaving the ork in half at the waist. The greenskin, clearly surprised that he could see his innards spilling out from his lower half, looked in consternation at Ignax. The Eagles Sanguine sergeant responded with a bullet in the ork's face.

As the Assault marine turned from the slain boy, another one shot at Ignax with a crudely-built pistol. The bullet bounced harmlessly off of the sergeant's chestplate. Ignax responded to this attack with an upward sweep of his chainsword, slicing open the ork's belly, and tearing its lower jawbone in two. The boy roared at Ignax, his organs spilling out, and as he lept towards the marine, a series of shells impacted with the ork and exploded, pulverizing the ork.

Ignax cleaved deeper and deeper into the depths of the ork Waaagh. As he sent boy after boy to their doom, he heard a large explosion behind him: something had taken the Dreadnought down. As Ignax looked around, he saw hundreds of hungry faces around him...

Killatoof decided Assault Marine was his favorite meal.
