More About Dakka

DakkaDakka - Warhammer, 40k, Warmachine and Flames of War Community.

DakkaDakka is a large, independent wargaming community that features discussion, tutorials and images for many games.

Warhammer 40,000

Our warhammer 40k forums are among our most popular. They have been operating the longest and contain discussion about every facet of warhammer 40k from tactics and army lists to background and upcoming releases.

Warhammer Fantasy

The Warhammer Fantasy Battle Forums are consistently increasing in popularity and are almost on a par with our 40k forums covering the same large range of content with advice from some of the best tacticians the world has to offer.

Warmachine and Hordes

Dakka now has one of the largest Warmachine and Hordes forums on the web, and has a huge range of Warmachine Pictures in our gallery.

Flames of War

Flames of War and other historical games are growing in popularity here on dakka and we invite anyone to join in and discuss them in detail. As flames of war grows more popular, Dakka's coverage will only increase. Be sure to check out the Flames of War gallery to see some inspiring stuff.

Dakka Features

Dakka is a big site with a lot to explore. Here we highlight some of our more interesting features:

Wargaming Gallery

The dakka gallery is one of the largest wargaming galleries in the world and has a huge range of tagged miniatures from many game systems. From flames of war to Maelstrom's Edge, and of course 40k. You can vote on images (like using hot-or-not), and use our advanced gallery search engine to find exactly what you are looking for, be it space marines, orks, cryx or Dark Elves!

Forums

The dakka forums are growing faster and faster and are the bread and butter of the website. They still maintain quality and a fair level of freedom compared to many other forums. Our most popular forum is News and Rumours, but Dakka Discussions and 40k army lists are very popular too. There are some important rules to consider (no spam, no swearing, no piracy) but everybody gets on well enough thanks to our great moderation team.

Articles

The dakka wargaming articles are run on a wiki (like wikipedia). We have a huge range of wargaming articles covering everything from tactica to modeling and painting and even some great funny stuff. If you are bored and want to have the equivalent of dozens of magazines to read then head over to the main articles page and start clicking around. Because it is a wiki, anybody can hop in and click the 'edit' tab at the top of the page, so if you have anything to add or just see some typos or bad grammar then you can help make it better for everyone.

Army Profiles

Dakka's army profiles are a throwback to the very earliest version of dakka from the late 1990s, where various armies were highlighted in detail. Our army profiles section now contains many armies from different game systems with in depth photographs, army lists and explanations of their signifigance from their owners.

Sponsor Press Release:
Thornvale City Kickstarter

Posted: 2025-12-11 20:00:00

Would you like to have an entire city for your wargames without spending hours designing terrain?

Davale Games is on Kickstarter with Thornvale City, a fully modular 3D city for 28–32 mm scale that was funded in just 40 minutes and has already passed 460% funding!

The project is organized into two main routes: Civil and Military, featuring shipyards, walls, barracks, markets, palaces, towers. With both standard and ruined versions, you can represent anything from a living city to a brutal siege. All pieces are modular, so you can build streets, plazas, ports and fortified districts exactly how you want them.

For those who want to go all-in on the full city, there’s a particularly good-value pledge: for €69 you get both routes, all city buildings and all content unlocked during the campaign. The total original value of the set is €346, which means you’re saving around 80% off the final price!

The campaign has already started unlocking Stretch Goals and Bonus Items (such as the destroyed shipyard, tree sets and various props), with files prepared for both FDM and resin printing.

If you’re into printable terrain and detail-packed tables, you might want to take a look at all the modules and renders here.

Dakka Forum: Christmas Project: Crystal Harbingers Thousand Sons (Mutalith Vortex Beast and Army Progress...

"But John," you might say, "It's early November, why are you starting your Christmas Project Blog?"

Because the auto industry - in which I work - is having a slow down with microprocessors not flowing as they should, leaving me with tons of free time, which got my miniatures built way faster than originally expected. And while that might be bad for my bank account (not that bad, my mortgage was paid off four years ago), I'll need the time because this year it's Thousand Sons, the arch-nemesis of every Warhammer 40k painter. Chaos Trim! Fancy Helmets! Cloaks! Tzaangors!

Well...not too many Tzaangors, really. I painted some for my Age of Sigmar Disciples of Tzneetch army and I don't have a big desire to repeat it. But it wasn't entirely avoidable, given that Tzaangor Enlightened come in the current Combat Patrol. I actually have 2 leftover boxes of Enlightened and 1 box of Tzaangors I didn't assemble, because who has time for birdy bois when I could be painting armored ghosts and tanks and sorcerers. The Battle Force Box they put out this year helped a lot, it was really nice (10 Rubrics, 5 SoC, 4 Sekhetar, 3 Exalted Sorcerers)

Now I did salvage the unfinished Mutalith Vortex Beast from the AoS army and gave it the paint stripper treatment. Gotta have at least on Distraction Carnifex. Then there's 2 Deimos Rhinos and 2 Deimos Predators (Lascannons), 2 Daemon Princes (winged and on foot), Ahriman on Disc, Ahriman Azek from Horus Heresy on foot (Sorcerer or Exalted Sorcerer stand-in), 3 Exalted Sorcerers (1 on disc), Tzaangor Shaman on Disc, 3 Enlightened, 4 Sekhetar Robots, 2x 5 Scarab Occult Terminators and 3x 10 Rubric Marines (2 squads with flamers, 1 with bolters). Over 2700 points of Thousand Sons, almost 1000 of that tied up in characters.

Of course, this is ...

Dakka Forum: Be Honest. Is Now a Bad Time to Build a Space Marine Army?

Posted: 2026-01-03 12:59:07
Forum post by Lathe Biosas, 36 responses at time of this post.

With the rumors of an impending 11th Edition and a new Codex, is it best for me to wait a couple months to see what changes before heavily investing in an army?

Or should I just build what I want and hope that it's still usable in the near future? (While assuming things like Detachments will change or be removed).

When doing model fine details and symbols do you prefer to...
Use standard decals
Create your own custom decals
Use detail on the original model itself
Deliberately buy upgraded parts for models with Symbols and detail on, to save using decals.
Model your own GS fine detail
Paint on fine details free hand
Don't bother with detail, just a basic paint job
