Captain Roderick asked for a smaller variation of an army build I would use. So I'm posting one here just in case anything might pick up something from it. Our last GT, where I made specialized units (specifically tailored roles) for the task I would need them to accomplish. Fortunately, I got Best General using the same concepts. The basic strategy of this army revolves around what I call "target overwhelm" and the first strike capability. Mainly I present killable but NUMEROUS targets that after turn 4, It becomes mathematically for the opponent to wipe you out while it continuous to eat away at the opponent's army. And of course the first strike (or alpha strike) where you make surgical attacks on vulnerable positions with fast, mobile, or accurate units (i.e. vendetta and Marbo). Here's a 1250pt list I would use:

HQ

CCS 50
standard 15
astropath 30
melta guns x 3 = 30
chimera ML, HF 55

180

ELITES

Marbo 65

TROOPS

Veterans 70
Melta 30
Chimera 55

155

PCS 30
flamer x 4 = 20
Chimera 55
105

Infantry squad 50
Autocannon 10
grenade launcher 5

65

Infantry squad 50
Autocannon 10
grenade launcher 5

65

FAST ATTACK/TROOPS:

Special weapons squad
Flamers x 3
on Vendetta with HB sponsons = 140
190

Special weapons squad
Flamers x 3
on vendetta with HB sponsons = 140
190

HEAVY

Manticore 160
Hydra 75

TOTAL 1250

It has everything that you need to deal with an immediate threat to any IG army. it has low AP high strength guns, Anti-tank, anti-light tank/anti infantry, anti horde, direct fire, indirect fire, assault capabities for camping enemy units, insta-kill capability, and best of all, at 1250 pt it has a 60-man head count and over 85% of it are troops. Most of whom are mobile.

Why thank you sir.

I'm looking at that and thinking, dang, I wish I could afford an assload of transports - but I'm not sure if it'd fit my feel all that much anyway. I've pretty much got a horde army going on, due to the Napoleonic feel. However, tailoring units is still something I'm trying to do... And a manticore would be hilarious to drop on a few transports. Certainly that list of roles will be something for me to work from in bigger builds.
I like the fact that your only demo charge is with Marbo - saves a lot of powergaming complaints. The same goes for the high number of flamers (over plasma weapons).

I am exceedingly jealous of your budget stretching to loads of shiny FW DKK models. Sooo beautiful!

If you're interested in looking over my 750pt list and giving me pointers, there's a massive thread here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/272576.page - no pressure though. Major thing with that list is that I've not got any chimera hulls either at present or on the way, which limits me from being as flexible as your force above.

Thanks for typing that up, I'll bookmark it for future reference

Cheers,
Roderick.

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

The good thing about the IG is that you can have a lot of different types of build... not just mechanized ones. All infantry is not only a good army but also great to play and has huge fluff potential. You have characters like Al Raheem that will make for great builds. or just plain all guardsmen horde. It's actually refreshing to see people use non-mech list nowadays. Posted a sample 750 list on the link you posted below.

Cheers!
