Hello,
I have recently (the past few months) made the leap from Fantasy to 40k and have yet not battled. Mostly I have been working on getting some mini's under my belt before venturing out into the Wartorn future. I have entered a Combat Squad tournament (500pts) and I am looking for a little CC as far as my list goes.
Just for a little background into the tournament....
Currently I play Space Marines
The tournament is called Evil Overdrive (I am sure that some of the veterans here will know what this means but for others here are some of the limitations)
I can not have any HQ or Unit with an invul. save (limits me to a Librarian)
or more than 2 Wounds
Need 1 Troop Choice
No Ordanance
No Unique or Special Characters
Any Armour can not have a total Armour of more than 32 (adding up the Front, and 2 Sides) this goes for tanks and Dreads (still can have a Rhino though)
I will be up against a few Ork players, an Imperial, a Dark Eldar, and a Necron player (so far)
So here is the list
10 - Tactical Marines (Power Sword for the Sergeant) and a Rhino - was thinking Missile Launcher and Flamer for now but maybe if I free up the points from the Cluster Mines
I can put in a Meltagun
5 - Assault Squad (Power Sword for the Sergeant)
5 - Scout Squad (Heavy Bolter) - armed with bolters to aide the Tac squad
3 - Scout Bike Squad (Cluster Mines)
This totals 500 pts exactly. One alternative option would be to lose the Cluster Mines on the Scout Bike squad and purchase Melta Bombs for the Assault Marine Sergeant and Meltagun for the Tactical Squad.
Thanks for reading and please any CC would be nice since I do not really have a lot of experience in putting together a list for 40k at this point in time.

I would almost say ditch the scouts (low BS means they miss all the time or at least they do for me) and probably pick up a rhino for your assault squad(so they dont get plinked and the rhino can act as some fire support

I'd suggest that if there's a low likelihood for heavy armour (and, unless I'm wrong, there aren't vehicles with, say, no armour in the back and huge in the front), then there's no real good reason to take a meltagun. You may instead want to stick with the flamer or, if you free up some points, a plasma gun. I would stick with infantry killers, since, because of the lack of armour, everyone's going to be playing for an assault based offensive, especially orks. The cluster mines could be used to rout some enemies, but that they're basic str limits their effect a bit (though, with a lot of basic infantry as enemies, it could work pretty well), but the one off effectiveness of them diminishes. Really, it's up to you what to do with this inrformation

Thanks for the suggestions guys,
@ Wardragoon - I forgot to say that the Assault Squad has jump packs but if I do drop the scouts an extra rhino on the field might be a cheap way to get some support for the Tac Squad. I was also considering maybe taking those points and beefing up my Assault squad by two more marines as well.
Another option could be a Land Speeder, anyone have any (good) experience with the use of oner of these.

I think another Rhino would be quite beneficial. Especially at 500 points, having two armored units will be advantageous.

At just 5 extra points, to put the assault squad instead in a razorback would be very effective. Cruise down Main Street while slaughtering up the hordes? Bam shizam

Hey guys,
After a great deal of personal deliberation and digging around for some extra funds I have changed my list as follows, let me know what you think.
10 - Tactical Marines (Power Sword for the Sergeant) and a Rhino - was thinking Missile Launcher and Flamer
7 - Assault Squad (Power Sword and Melta Bombs for the Sergeant) - added 2 new marines and the Melta Bombs
3 - Scout Bike Squad (Cluster Mines)
1 - Razorback (added, and where the funds will be spent)
I thought that I would keep the Cluster Mines on the Bike Squad just to see how they work out for me. I am hoping to have my first trial run with this list this friday after my exams before the February start date for the tournament.

Lord Kaesar II - I was going to leave the Razorback empty as support or have the option of splitting my marines into two squads then maybe even upgrade the other Rhino to a Razorback.

So, here it is (I hope) my final revision to my list that will see the field of battle twice this week before the tournament next Saturday.
10 marine Tactical Squad - M.L. and F.L., Power Sword for my Sergeant and a Rhino to carry them around in.
6 Assault marines - Power Sword and Melta Bombs for the Sergeant
3 Scout Bikes (as is)
Land Speeder with Multi Melta (Tornado)

I personally would still say the melta weaponry will be unused and therefore limit your destructive capacity, because of the low armour values you will be facing. My suggestion would be to get rid of the multi-melta on the tornado and then you could use that extra 10 points somewhere else, like putting a powerfist on your assault marine or something like that. Just my 4 shillings.
