Subject: The Sons of Ashryn ... a New Space Marine Chapter for a New 40k Player (More WIP pics added)
|
 |
Spawn of Chaos
|
Greetings to all,
I thought that I would finally dust myself off and post a log that will follow the creation of ..... and founding of a new Space Marine Chapter. I really enjoy how in depth you can get with creating a new chapter for Space Marines and it was due to this that I have now crossed the bridge to include 40k in my list of hobbies. (the AOBR box set and Space Hulk Models helped out a lot too)
So here is the 'fluff' behind my new chapter and I hope that you enjoy the read. (more will follow as I pin down where I want to take the list)
Chapter Name: Sons of Ashryn
Current Chapter Master: Wyn Sharagen
The current Chapter Master has been rumored to have served the Sons of Ashryn since the days of Chapter Master Ashryn himself and has led his battle brothers into many a conflict with victory as the outcome. But it is upon his shoulders that falls the future of his Chapter and the fate of the system at the hands of the nameless death which currently holds them all within its grip. It is due to this great burden that Sharagen has become sullen in his age and very resolute in any of the decisions that are made. A man of great faith and martial skill, Chapter Master Sharagen holds out for the slight ray of hope that some day he will be able to return his Chapter to its former days of glory
Home Planet: the Sons of Ashryn call the orbital fortress-monastery Cephas home, circling the “planet” moon of Ashryn. But this was not always so, many centuries ago the Sons of Ashryn enjoyed the comforts of the surface world from their first home, the Basilica d'Vir Virtus. A grand structure built from the strong black marble stone native to the barren planet Nyhiir IV. Once completed Chapter Master Uln Ashryn, for whom the moon carries his namesake, thought that the Basilica had softened his battle brothers so he commissioned the construction of Cephas and left the surface for the harsh cold of space.
Trait Disadvantages: Aside from some of their faults through doctrine and distance from Terra the Sons of Ashryn have noticed a recent defect in their gene-seed which can be directly linked to the fact that the Chapter has had a great deal of difficulty in recovering their loses. The current Chapter Master Wyn Sharagen has not yet made this knowledge public aside from those trusted individuals whom he keeps council with.
Colours: Officers and Veterans can coat their armour in the colour of pure Bone with a red shoulder guard above their right arm and black above their left. Core troops wear black armour with all trim bearing the colour of Bone, the shoulder guard above their right arm done in red.
Gene-seed Source: some historians would argue that the Sons of Ashryn are descendent of the mighty Black Templars due to the fact that many of their traits are similar. And still there are even more who claim evidence linking the Chapter back to one of the lost legions. It was not until Chapter Master Ashryn first stepped foot on the surface of the “planet” moon of his namesake that the history of the Chapter was put to pen. Now too few remain from those times who know the truth and none would be willing to reveal it anyways.
Interesting Facts: the Sons of Ashryn follow the Codex Astartes for the most part but due to loses over the years have been forced to reconsider the structure and downsize the number of Companies within the Chapter. This makes Captains fewer and more vital to the operation of the Chapter.
The Sons of Ashryn favour Close Combat oriented strategies rather than bombardment so the Chapter holds its Rhino divisions in the highest of priorities and reserve their dreadnaughts for a more supporting role.
Some concept sketches will follow, I plan on making the chapter fairly heavy with conversions.
And as always CC is welcome, I have played WFB for nearly 14 years but only recently (2009) got into 40k. So any advice that some of the 40k experts out there would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys,
|

I agree. The color scheme is gonna be eye catching. Adding the sword to the symbol will just clutter it up. Maybe for the Sgts and/or sqd leaders.
Ill be watching for some updates.

Thanks to all who have shown their support. I started last night with a few test minis to see how the paint scheme works out and hope to get some photos up in the very near future. Other projects and the family life have slowed the project ... just a little.
In the meantime ... more Fluff!
Tale of the Rebirth
Many centuries ago when the Swords of Dawn were sent to the distant Nyhiir system they were charged with the task of ridding the planet Nyhiir IV of the evil that had taken root there. Unfortunately the reports on the strength of this evil had been greatly understated and when the Swords of Dawn broke through the atmosphere to land on the surface they were met with a hostility that known of them had expected. Within the first three days of combat the space marine chapter had experienced the loss of nearly two entire companies, and Chapter Master Uln Ashryn foresaw more to come. So nursing a hidden wound the Chapter Master returned to orbit with a new plan to weaken the forces on the main planet by destroying the eight temples built on the moons orbiting Nyhiir IV. The first of which was the large Terran moon which would later be named Ashryn where the evil forces of chaos had enslaved the local populace and constructed a structure which was an affront to all sentient life. During the course of the battle that ensued Uln Ashryn was able to make his way to the inner sanctum of the corrupt temple along with a small handful of his most loyal and skilled captains and in an act of self sacrifice threw himself into the maelstrom which was the core of the temple to prevent the emergence of a greater daemon into the realm of man.
In the aftermath of the conflict on ‘Ashryn’ only eight members of the fifty who entered the temple with Uln Ashryn surfaced from the rubble. And it was one in particular who stood at the edge of the crater and reaching up to his right shoulder tore of the guard and tossed it in with all the debris below. Daya Sharagen was then named Chapter Master of the newly reborn Sons of Ashryn in honour of their fallen leader and it was upon this site of evil that they built the Basilica d’Vir Virtus. Over the next two centuries Wyn Sharagen led several precision strikes against the remaining temples of chaos on the other seven moons of Nyhiir IV and to date has ground five of them to dust, but with the new development in his chapters gene-seed the Chapter Master of the Sons of Ashryn has had to be a little more cautious in his attempts to cleanse the remaining two moons before ultimately leading his battle brothers down to the surface of Nyhiir IV in a final push for retribution.
Thanks for reading, there will be more to follow.
And as always CC is welcome.

The Battle of Antiquities
After the fall of the third temple of chaos, Wyn Sharagen had grown somber questioning whether his battle brothers would weather the relentless storm of chaos. Each new conflict tore a little more from the once heroic warrior, this change in moods had also grabbed a hold of the ‘Seven’ (as the survivors had come to be called by their battle brothers).
As a solution to this change in his Master, the Keeper of Antiquities Chaplain Toran believed that a crusade was needed for those whom had been touched more deeply by the evils that this system had once held. Chief Librarian Margus, the Keeper of Records, informed both Sharagen and Toran of a vision that he had of a grand blade, an artifact of the Dawn Swords believed to have been lost on the surface of Nymiir IV by Ashryn in the early stages of the first encounter with chaos. He also hinted at the idea that the blade was no longer safe amongst the honoured dead of their former chapter.
After the proper preparation and fasting, Sharagen along with the ‘Seven’ and Chaplain Toran left the cold halls of Cephas to once again land on the surface of Nymiir IV near the landing site of the Dawn Swords. It was on Nymiir IV that the squad of elite warriors clashed with one of the many small cults of chaos worshippers located on the planet. It was from the dead hands of their leader that Sharagen pulled the blade of his forefathers. But to his shame the Chapter Master had been inflicted with an infectious wound which would claim his leg.
Bringing the blade back to Cephas Sharagen with the aide of Lorimer, the Master of the Forge was able to not only regain his leg through a prosthetic but re-forge the blade into the Talio Spear (the spear of retribution) which Sharagen has used since to dispense vengeance for his fallen battle brothers.

I will be purchasing a new camera tomorrow so hope to finally get some pictures up of some of my WIP and at the same time an army list to reflect some of the fluff that I have already written. I got a hold of seven of the Space Hulk Terminators which I will be using to represent the 'Seven' survivors and Sharagen will be a cross between a kit-bash and sculpt. Getting rid of all the BA iconography is quite the task at this time though.
Thanks for reading, any CC is welcome.

With school in full swing the posts may be spread out a little long, so my apologies to any following.
I was able to throw together a quick WIP paint theme on a terminator to see if the theme would work and am actually pleased with how the colours mesh together.
Remember that this is a WIP so there is no real shading in this test mini.
CC always appreciated
The last two pictures are the Space Hulk models that I was able to attain through an idependent shop here in town and will represent the 'Seven' from my current fluff. Most of them have had the BA iconography removed but some remain.

Greetings fellow Dakka's,
First off my apologies for taking so long with this project but I went back to college and last semester was pretty intense. But it is over so back to the grindstone to get this project off the ground once and for all. Back in October I won my local clubs paint-or-die challenge with my warriors of chaos army (will work on getting some nice finished photos shortly) and received some store credit so I purchased the Command Squad Box, a Venerable Dreadnaught, and the Battallion box so I have a lot of WIP pics coming up.
My paint theme has taken a slight change since I have recently acquired an interest in the whole process of halving and quartering, so here is an example of where I will be heading with the Tactical marines in my chapter at this point.
CC is always welcome and any insider tips as to how to get a smooth line will be welcome. I have heard that masking tape works pretty well in this regard.
Thanks,

As promised here are some WIP shots of some of my first Tactical Squad which I will be fielding in Febrauary for a Combat squad tournament. Currently they are not on bases for painting purposes and will hopefully see some paint early next week. I went with the theme of an entire squad with bare heads and poses that would suggest trampling through harsh terrain, whether Urban or Wild.
Any CC on what I have done so far is always welcome.
Currently I have the entire 10 man Tactical assembled as well as a 5 man Assault, 5 man Scout, and 3 Scout bikes for the tournament. The last couple of shots are of my early attempts at putting together a Librarian for my Chapter. The banner pole will be converted to a force weapon of some kind in the very near future. I plan on sculpting some books for him using 'Greenstuff', any tips on creating books on shoulder pads greatly appreciated, otherwise I will just dive in and see what I get as a result.

Like the scheme. It's very similar to one that I've used on two incarnations of my DIY marine chapter. Pictures are mostly lost to dead computers and the internet as both armies were sold off. Here's the only pic I can still find at the moment.
http://demonwinner.free.fr/canada/2002/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=3#3rd
For the book, if you mean an open book on the shoulder pad, start with plasticard as the "cover" and then sculpt in each half of the pages with putty.

I never found the need for masking tape. Most of the divisions occur over a pretty small area so you can get away with a steady hand. The helmet is probably the trickiest part and even then, like the rest of their armour, you have a lot of visual guides to keep a straight line (peak of helmet, top/bottom of respirator, centre of chest eagle and belt buckle). Having one of your two halving colours be black definitely makes things a little easier.

Thanks for the comments and the tips guys,
The back banner was just an idea which may or may not happen in the finished product. It will probably depend on how I base him and accesorize the model. I am trying not to clutter him too much in order to keep a continuity within the chapter.
And I appreciate the compliments on the fluff, I figure if you are not truly interested in what you are doing then there is really no need for you to be doing it.
There will be plenty more to follow with this project as I plan to take it to a full Battle Company before I finish.
(and I hope that my pictures will improve with time)

I have done some more work on my Librarian and pretty much figure on finishing shortly, the only road block is the hood. Hopefully something comes to me soon as I really would like to get some paint on this guy.
Here are some pics of the near completed Librarian (the weapon arm and backpack are dry fit at the moment in order to paint). I tried to create a cybernetic arm simply because I can not recall ever seeing a Librarian with one before and thought it would make him a little grittier to fit with the rest of the Troops.
Please let me know what you think of him CC is always welcome.
Thanks, Automatically Appended Next Post: I have entered a 500pt tournament and have started a post with my current stab at a functional list, if anyone has any knowledge into making a list of this size here is the link to that page.

So I have finally begun to construct and paint my first Tank,
Here are a couple WIP shots of the interior, I thought I would go a little all out with my first tank to see if I could do it. I magnetized the back door (not the side ones yet... maybe next one) so it is operable and made an attempt at painting some scanner screens.
Any CC as to my progress would be appreciated since I am new to the whole painting and assembly of tanks in general.
