Claudia wrinkled her nose at the stench permeating in the air. Even this far out, she could smell the rotten flesh from the Plague Marines curse by Nurgle’s pestilence. She cocked her microphone and peered through her binoculars, eves dropping on the conversation between Mortarion, Primarch of Deathguard, and Belial, Grand Master of Deathwing.

“Greetings Belial,” Mortarion snickered, “You look a little pale. Perhaps motion sickness from teleporting down here?”

“Look Nurgle scum,” Belial snapped, “I don’t want to be here anymore than you do. So tell me, where is Cypher?”

“Why the rush Grand Master? You just got here. Relax and enjoy your sweet time. Take it slow and savor each second of your life.”

“I don’t have time for your silly games. Tell me where Cypher is or I’ll pry the information out with my Thunder Hammer.”

Mortarion let out a sigh and handed Belial a dataslate. “There you will find his current hideout and force strength,” inform the Primarch. “Send him my regards. He’s been a major thorn in my side.”

Belial left without another word.

.....

“Did you get everything?” Claudia whispered into her vox

“Yes,” Canoness Dianus replied back. “Consider the Dark Angel’s 1st Company heretics. Justice will be dealt in due time, but first Mortarion and his Deathguards must be taken care of."

“Canoness?” Claudia asked.

“What is it?”

“Please keep your rebreather and helmet on. Trust me, you will need it.”

Last weekend I competed in a local 1850 points tournament held at Games Workshop. The tournament consisted of 3 rounds, each 2 hours long, with preset missions and deployment. Eight players showed up with the following armies:

Spoiler:
Victory for the Sisters of Battle!

Afterthoughts:

My opponent brought a very fluffy Death Guard army list complete with a beautiful range of preheresy Plague Marines. Unfortunately thematic armies usually don’t win competitive games.

I had a shaky beginning. On turn 1 I lost an Immolator and almost an entire Celestian squad with it. On turn 2 I lost a Battle Sister Rhino. By then, most of my forces were close to my opponent’s first line of defense. I overwhelmed the FNP T5 Marines and even score a few wounds on the Daemon Prince. My Seraphims alone killed two Plague Marine squads and towards the end tied a third in Plague Marine squad in assault.

The game ended on turn 5. Had it continued I probably would have lost my bottom left objective to the Chosens, but I would have also captured top right objective and still come out with a 2 - 0 victory.

.....

A squad of Celestians fires at Mortarion, riddling his body with bullets and searing off his daemonic wings using meltaguns. Mortarion is oblivious to pain. Whirling his daemon scythe, he charges into the Celestians. In one giant swing he decapitates three Celestians and nicks two others. The edge of his blade emitted a viral toxin making even the slightest touch lethal. The two Celestians screams and started stripping their armor off, revealing the two festering wounds rapidly dissolving their bodies. They itch and squirm until the rot finally reaches their beating hearts, spilling a pool of blood and puss all over the ground.

“Is this the best you’ve got?” Mortarion taunts the rest of the Sisters.

Canoness Dianus steps forward and signals the rest of her Retinue to stand down.

“And here I thought you were just a lazy scumbag who takes his sweet time,” Dianus reply.

Mortarion chuckles. “Yes, I’ll savor each moment I hear you scream as I slowly infect your body with maggots and disease,” he snares.

Mortarion assault the Canoness with his scythe raise high. Dianus dodge to the side as the blade comes crashing down. She swings her Eviscerator, taking a chunk of corroded armor and rotten flesh from Mortarion’s side. The Primarch shifts his grip and follows up with a horizontal sweep. Dianus brings her up her Eviscerator and blocks the blow. Mortarion sucks phlegm from his nose and spat a glob of corrosive slime onto Dianus’s helmet, blocking her vision slit. Dianus rolls backwards and threw her helmet off. Already her helmet was dissolving from Mortarion’s sticky acidic mucous.

Mortarion frowns in dismay when he sees Dianus wear a rebreather underneath her helmet. Dianus whispers a silent thanks to Claudia for the agent’s foresight and charges at Mortarion. The Primarch sucks in another glob of phlegm, ready to spit again. Dianus quickly unholst her Brazier of Holy fire and flicks it on. A blast of burning promethium erupts in Mortarion’s face, burning his skin and boiling his eye sockets. Mortarion blindly swings all around him. Dianus easily ducks and evades, striking her Eviscerator left and right. Each swing tears a ligament crippling the Primarch. At last Mortarion lay flopping on the ground both armless and legless. Dianus bends over and whispers in Mortarion’s ear.

“Savor this moment heretic because it will be your last.”

Mortarion was about to curse a reply, but Dianus silence him with a low sweep of her Eviscerator, decapitating the Primarch.

Thanks for the positive feedback!

I apologize for blurry pictures. GW's store lighting is really dim from black painted wall and fluorescent lights.

Yeah, Seraphims are awesome, IMO one of the best units in 40k!

Nicely done, the problem I always have with Seraphim is keeping them alive when there is significant small arms fire coming their way. They are just a bit too big to totally hide behind a Rhino/Immolator - altho if we get repressors those are a little taller and might do it.

While I think the Death Guard you played had a theme going, I wouldn't exactly call it a strongly thematic army. For example, minimum sized PM squads rather than scared number 7 squads, standard loadout Nurgle Prince, etc. Also, with so much plasma he can be really annoying at 24" shooting away at units and 5x outflanking melta is nothing to sneeze at.

Congrats on the victory. A lot of people underestimate how tough a plaguemarine army is until they play them. I myself almost lost to a nurgle marine army with my space wolves. Also, at the Sprue Posse and Broadside Bash tournaments, it was nurgle marines who came out 1st in both events.

I actually saw your opponent's army a couple of days before the tournament and wanted to play against it with my Grey Knights. Unfortunately, he was leaving soon so couldn't play.

Looking forward to some more reps.

@Calypso2ts:

I rarely have problems hiding them out of TLOS.

I trimmed the metal stilts underneath the Seraphim's feat reducing their height and have the Immolator top on all my vehicles. Remember, weapons don't count for TLOS.

@jy2

The Plague Marine player should have played more defensive rather than moving up first turn and hiding behind a building. He also gave me the table quarter with the most objectives.
