Hey guys, I'm starting a new IG list with 2 Vendettas inside for their great Tank-Hunting Ability. But I'm planning to get the Vulture models from Forge World to represent them because they look that much better.
I like the idea of the Vendettas as pure gunships aka. A-10s in real life. I remember when the guard codex came out a lot of people were saying the Vendetta shouldn't be able to carry troops because it would be too good for its points.
I'm already running 3 veteran squads in Chimeras, is running melta-veterans inside your Vendettas the only way to run them competitively? If so, I shouldn't probably just stick with the plastic GW model since the Vulture doesn't have a troop compartment.

I like to take Special Weapons Squads with three demo charges, but you obviously need to take Infantry Platoons to make these available. It's a lot of fun to have the Vendetta scout and drop them off the first turn. It's a real headache for you opponent. They can do so much damage for their 105 points and they have three ablative wounds. They can also implode and fail, but so can anything, and they really get in the enemy's head.

I try NOT to put anything in them and just use them as dedicated gunships. That way I can keep everthing in the fight and allow the ven's just to dance away from anything too threatening without having to worry about wasting the units embarked. If I do embark anything, its usually a melta vet squad I deep strike near a objective or something I really want gone.

Depends. If I go first, I sometimes toss a vet squad in there and scout it up for the melta alpha-strike.
Otherwise, generally not.

Even if you don't put anything inside can't the Vendettas still turbo-boost last turn to contest objectives?
Since there is a good chance Vendettas will be priority no. 1 (more so than Chimeras) for your opponent to shot down they might be dead before the troops inside can get used.

I typically don't, I usually keep them dedicated gunships, but sometimes I will load melta guys into them (vets, allied WH ST's, command squads, etc.)

To contest, yes, but remember that they're not tanks; they can't tank shock a unit off an objective, making it very hard to actually contest unless the opponent is barely on the objective to begin with.
Realistically, most of the time Vendettas are shot down not because of this, but because they're just fething scary. Three TL lascannons are painful against almost any type of army.

I did put a Meltavet squad inside them when I just started using them.
Unfortunately, I play DoA BA and DE mostly, so there either isn't anything worthwhile to sacrifice the Vets (DE) or anything on the table at all (BA).
I've found that they are simply to fragile as transports, and I have had much greater success as using them as empty gunships.

Vendettas tend to be targeted first because of the high threat of 3 tl las cannons so putting anything inside unless you are using them for first turn alpha strike is generally not recommended.

Quad-melta CCS in my 2 Vendettas. I run them for the problematic Raider Rush deathstar lists. Sacrificing troops choices isn't really a game-winning tactic so HQ choices make better candidates for the Martyr Brigades.

Ideally you want a few options for what you can put in them. Having melta units which you can scout forward to kill Land Raiders etc is always helpful. Otherwise you want really cheap units mostly just to make them scoring, because as people have mentioned Vendettas tend to be very high in target priority so putting expensive stuff in there all the time is a waste. Deploying them empty works as well, you can always have something jump in later to make them scoring anyway.

I’ve tried to use them as transports in various situations, only the turn one alpha strike really works. I still don’t use it because I feel it’s a waist of troops and a bird. As well I use manticores and I’ve found them to be just as affective in taking down prime targets.

I have found that sticking a flamer SWS inside one can work out well. They are a cheap unit that make the vendetta a scoring unit. Also, they can hope out and flame things if needed. The reason I like this loadout is that the unit is cheap enough that the vendetta doesn't have to focus on deploying them, keeping them as a backup for later turns. Putting veterans inside vendettas means that you have to use them as a part of your strategy, they are too expensive to leave at the back for most of the game.

It depends greatly on the setup of the game, for me. I have PCS units with meltas (and/or flamers) that I'll put in them for alpha-striking if I get first turn. Similarly, if I don't get first turn and there are no good targets for those units (flamers vs marines), I'll just keep them in the Vendetta to make it scoring.
Most of the game, though, the Vendettas are primarily gunships instead of tranports. They get used as transports only if a good opportnuity arises (flexibility is winner!). I think the "Air-cav" lists should stick to Valks, since they don't lose firepower by flitting around with dudes inside.

I have a fairly novel tradition of running my vendettas with Penal Legion squads in them. Cheap, a troops choice, and good in CC (for guard) if they get shot down near enemies... not too much to lose!

Generally i don't put anything in them as it is a big shiny target for my enemies to shoot down and takes the most fire (but has not been shot down after 12 games) as i fly it round taking out enemy amour especially rhino's fun.

I put melta-vets in mine (Vendettas).
I find that when I go first the option to alpha-strike two major vehicles Turn 1 is huge. When I go second I outflank them which (when coupled with an Astropath) generally sees them arrive in Turn 2, on the board side I want, with the option to either fire lascannons or drop scoring melta units wherever I please.
Works well for me.

I started putting Veterans with Meltas and demolitions in my Vendettas for the alpha strike back and because converted grav chute vets looked cool back in 09. I found that although cool for alpha striking Vendettas got shot down first and jumping out to shoot something usually got your veterans killed so I moved to Veterans with in Chimeras for the fire points and having the Vendettas empty unless I get first turn.
With the FAQ making it so Vendettas must move > 6 to get on the board so they can't reserve and fire all 3 las cannons looking at putting Melta vets or special weapon squads in one or two again especially when I have Alrahem to give them the bring it down order.
