So after getting sucked back into the hobby by starting up a new Blood Bowl league (which my Wood Elves are currently losing), I figured my Space Wolves could do with a fresh lick of paint too.

I initially got into the hobby back in the mid-90s so the majority of my stuff is from that period, and my painting skills weren't up to much. So a quick dip in paint-stripper later, and I have a pretty hefty Space Wolf army to paint. Unfortunately, the older models are lead with plastic arms, so I've currently got a couple of squads with no arms/weapons. Thankfully the nice new Space Wolves Pack comes with enough arms to do either Blood Claws or Grey Hunters, so I figure 2 boxes should give me enough spare weapons to get my old Grey Hunters and Blood Claws back to fighting strength!

The first box arrived this morning, and I have to say, the new plastics are very, very nice! They come with a nice amount of extra 'wolfy' bits too, which is a bonus. My only gripe is I'm (personally) not keen on having helmet-less marines - Sergeants etc are fine, but IMO the 'rank-and-file' should be helmeted. Ah well, I'm sure I'll make do.

I thought I'd start this thread as I'm about to have 2 weeks 'spare' time when the fiancée is away, which is a pretty perfect opportunity to make a start, and the motivation of trying to keep this updated should help me plough through!

This is the Sergent from my old Grey Hunters squad which I did back then:

My first decision is which colour to do them - the powder blue of the 90s like the Sergeant, or the more grey colour of the Horus era Wolves, similar to DV8's Wolves over on Bolter and Chainsword (these are not mine!):

At the moment I'm leaning towards the darker grey, but can't bring myself to strip down my Sergeant. I also need to have a read over the Codex, as the weapons each squad can have has changed since I last played.

For those of you who're interested, my army from back in the day which is going to get re-painted consists of:
1x Blood Claws with jump-packs (I refuse to call them Sky Claws...)
1x Grey Hunters
2x Long Fangs
2x Terminator squads
1x Landspeeder (painted, not getting re-done)
1x Predator tank (the REALLY old one)
1x Razorback (the REALLY old one)
Ragnar
Njal
Ulrick
Wolf Priest in terminator armour
Bjorn
Standard Bearer
Techmarine and Servitor
Leman Russ and wolves (the original Rogue Trader one)

Obviously this will have 2 of the new squads to bolster it, and potentially some new Terminators just because the models are cool! I'm not planning on re-doing the vehicles at the moment, but might pick up a Land Raider and Rhino a little further down the line.

Wow! Those are really good looking! I don't like the SW army but I definitely dig the paint scheme and symbols and gear!

Yeah, DV8's models (2nd image) are really nice, very 'barbarian' looking which I think fits with the fluff nicely.

Managed to finally make a start on re-arming the Blood Claws, got the first 5 done this morning.

I've also just realised that while I may have enough arms to do 2 squads, I don't think I'm going to have enough shoulders. Damn.

Welcome back into the 40K Fold, Hatticus. I have quite a bit of SW stuff as my Chapter (in my sig) uses a fair bit of their symbology. I have quite a few spares, post up what types of shoulders and I will search my Bit'z Box. In return if you have any of the Pony Tail heads going spare I would take them off your hands in exchange.

I like your original painting style (powder blue ftw), it's not very often you get a nice clean SW paint scheme, I particularly like the Crystal in the centre of his torso. It's an 8 out of 10 based on your old mini, I would just keep painting like that and maybe pickup some of Scribor's Special Sculpts of do some particularly feral/barbarian Wolf Guard as you can use them as Leaders in other games, and it adds versatility to your force.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

I should have a bunch of heads spare - I'm not overly keen on bare-headed marines, seems like a bad idea IMO! Will get my Grey Hunters assembled over the next few days then drop you a PM with what I've got left over

I've got a couple of test models on the go to try and work out which colour-scheme I prefer (and also how best to undercoat - black or white), will get some pics up when I've done some more on them tonight

Already got my eye on a couple of the Scribor figures!

Right, here's my test figure (apologies for the terrible photo, had to use my phone)

Think I'm still leaning towards the grey, but maybe with a blue wash over it (as opposed to the Devlan Mud I used on this guy)

I think with Red, Yellow and Black it will accent the Grey. Just like your figure at the top. Your Call, I do love the AOBR Marines, I painted 20 last weekend, for the price they are fantastic quality for the price and are dirt cheap on the Internet. You just have to spend a fair bit of time with a file and get rid of the mould lines otherwise they are fantastic "Filler Marines" leaving you more time for the Sgt's and Vets and Characters.

Finally made some progress on these guys, got my first new squad all assembled and ready for painting. One needs a little GS to fill a couple of gaps.

The bolters are not glued in for ease of painting. Same reason why some have backpacks and some not.

Either gold/bronze or bone I reckon. Most likely gold.

Having not played 40K for a while, are Flamers a good choice for Blood Claws/Sky Claws? I'm primarily doing the army from a painting/modeling perspective, but having competitive squads is a nice bonus in case I ever get any games in

Exactly. Hostile environments and flying bullets make helmets the sensible choice!
