(Disclaimer: Neither of us remembered to videotape this. i took some pics, but when we were at the bottom of turn three and realized no video, the general consensus was that we both would prefer to focus on the game. I'm going to be loosely describing this, with some units being described as moving and shooting, then going on to other units moving. This isn't turn sequence fail, but rather the stories of each unit told in turn.)

We rolled pitched battle deployment and killpoints mission
Space wolves win the roll off and elect to go first.

Space wolves deploy everything except landspeeders and wolf scouts
Tyranids deploy 1 unit of hive guard out of LOS and infiltrate genestealers 18" away in some ruins that block LOS

Turn one:
Space wolves- Tank line moves forward at crusing speed. On my left is the rhinos containing all of the gray hunters, the bikers, a dread, the vindicator, and a razorback. Long fangs set up shop in a building in the center of the board. On the right side of the board from my perspective is Bjorn, the landraider, another razorback, the TWC, and the other dread. TWC moves towards the genestealers at full gallop.

Tyranids - Hive guard move out of LOS and take pot shots at the Landraider, exposing some leg and offering a tempting target while staying in cover. Landraider doesnt even slow down. 10 Genestealers and their broodlord move out of the ruins and run towards the TWC. They make it into combat, and kill off both fenrisian wolves from Canis and put a wound each across the rest of the squad. TWC then attacks back, putting 2 wounds on the broodlord and killing all but one stealer. Genestealers fail leadership and make it away, fleeing 9" back towards the hive guard screaming "Get back in cover! These guys are serious!"
SW: 0 , Nids: 0

Turn two:
Space wolves: Tanks move slightly away from the left board edge and closer to the tyranid side, everyone takes a smoke break. The Wolf scouts come on the board just behind the hive guard. Shooting at the hive guard, even with cover, nets the space wolves a KP. The leg, so saucily stuck out into the open, lays there gently steaming. TWC catch the genestealers who fail to do anything except bleed all over the place.

Tyranids : With alien cunning and Hive commander, everything is coming in on a 2+, except for the tervigon, Swarmlord/guard, and one of the large genestealer units. Trygons all pop up next to the tanks and shoot s5 shots that fall limply to the ground. The other hive guard move up into ruins on my left and blow the vindicator's main gun off. Gargoyles move onto the board, giving cover to the harpy, which gave cover to the Flyant right behind it. The harpy immobilizes the vindicator. Zoanthropes drop down next to the landraider, and take off the assault cannon and nothing more. Each pod of devourer armed termagants dropped down in position to fire at a group of long fangs, and wiped one group out and reduced the other to a single model. Genestealers came in on my left board edge and rolled a 6 for run, just making it into combat with the bikes. part of the unit assaulted into some of the tanks, hoping to get lucky and spread out a little. Bikers were destroyed along with the rune priest that was with them, and genestealers consolidated 5" into two separate areas of cover, 25% of the squad making it into each piece of area terrain, with the other 50% strung out two deep in a line between the other two, forming a wall.
SW: 2 , Nids : 3

Turn three:
Space Wolves: one of the rhinos and a razorback pull back to his board edge, and out of every other tank swarms a seething tide of angry hairy gentlemen with big guns. Three units of 10 marines rapid fire into the genestealers, and one unit of ten opens up into the gargoyles. The genestealers took 8 casualties ad a wound on the broodlord, one less wound than average. (60 shots on 3+, 40 hits on 4+, 20 wounds, cover saves on 4+). The gargoyles were less fortunate, suffering 11 casualties. TWC charged into the closest group of devgants, who dutifully walked into the meat grinder. The terminators piled out of the landraider and shot combi meltas at a trygon prime, supported by the landraider and the last longfang, leaving the Trygon prime with one wound. In combat, the trygon shamefully kills only one terminator and is then reduced to a tail section flopping around on the ground. The other trygons gulp noticably. Bjorn takes a wound off my Flyrant.

Tyranids: The rest of my reserve arrive, the swarmlord moving onto the board behind the flying nids. The other group of stealers moves onto the board Behind the first group, and run into range of the space marine feast. The tervigon comes onto the board right by the forgotten wolf scouts, and then similarly does nothing else the entire game (that board corner was the farthest from the action and had 2 LOS blocking buildings in the way). During shooting, the unoccupied Devourer gants shot at one of the marine squads along with the regular trygon. They start hauling ass, 10" away, too far for the trygon to reach. Trygon makes hungry noises, and watches jealously as the trygon prime snacks on a rhino. The Swarmlord cast Paroxsym on the group of marines by the gargoyles. Gargoyles shoot back at the marines and then swoop in to get rerolls to hit (Old adversary) and then to wound (Toxin sacs+adrenals), wiping out the squad of marines. The depleted genestealers assault one of the marine groups that had shot at it, eating it down to 4 marines that were trapped, and so took a wound for continuing to fight. The 20 man genestealer squad took care of the other ten marines, rerolls to wound causing disgusting amounts of rending. They also managed to blow up a rhino thanks to the 6 stealers and broodlord that contacted the tank. The Flyrant blew up the immobilized vindicator. The Other trygon prime decided to avenge his twin and assaulted the terminators, killing 3 and taking two wounds. Terminator fled and was caught, passed his 2+ save. The Single devgant that remained in combat fails leadership and miraculously gets away, looking back over his shoulder the entire time. Almost every vehicle exploded, which was exciting until I realized they were exploding on me, too.

Turn 4:
Space wolves: Twc Decide that the Pods have to go. They spread out and assault both the zoanthropes pod and the devgant pod, splatting both. The lefthand Venerable moves up to the remaining Devgants, opening up with sis twin linked heavy flamer. The gants do a funny dance, and I take from the back of the pile, allowing the dread to assault and then kill 6 more, 3 more in combat and then 3 from failed fearless saves. The remaining rhino and razorback unload their marines and then move forward to choke the passage forward while offering lanes of fire. 24" range on the guns allows most to shoot at either the trygon or the large group of genestealers. Bjorn and the landraider open fire on the Swarmlord, who took two wounds and lost a guard. The right hand venerable moves up, again wishing that the combats on the left side of the board were closer. The long fang splats the remaining pod with his Str 8 missle. During combat, the marines succumb to genestealers, who consolidate into the terrain to the left of the tank choke. The Landspeeders went unrolled for, and were allowed to enter the board and stay out of LOS. The terminator fell to the Trygon prime. Razorback put a lascannon beam through the fleeing termagant.

Tyranids: Genestealers move out of cover and begin to surround the closerst tank and its crew of marines. The heavily depleted other genestealer squad moves in on the other tak roadblock. The marines take heavy casualties, and both tanks explode, taking one group of stealers down to 2 models and the other down to about 8. The Trygon prime Assaults and kills Bjorn, and the Flyrant moves in and assaults the landraider, which explodes.. Gargoyles swoop in and gun down the long fang. Trygon comes in to help the devgants, and ... explodes the venerable dread. Harpy flys into elevation and shoots at the landspeeders, doing nothing.

Turn 5 was too grisly to repeat here. Suffice to say, the Tyranids passed a lot of saves and tarpitted the TWC with zoanthropes, preventing The wolves from saving Bjorn, netting the nids another 3 KP. Marines gunned down the genestealers, and were then eaten by a trygon.

Final Score: Space Wolves- 11 KP Tyranids- 17 KP

It is worth noting several things:
1) My opponent thought he was going to be playing against Chaos Space Marines.
2) This was our first time paing competitively against eachothers army type.
3) The bet was lowered to $100 of models as a result of the above, and that this would be the first game of more to come.
4) If you add up the values of the armies, the wolves are actually 20 points over. Also, Logan and Bjorn bear the same saga.
5) Handshakes before and after the game, everything kept civil, with genuine advice and honest playing.
6) That I am looking forward to our next game, this time with 100% less video fail!

The loot: Space Marine Drop Pod on sprue, OOP Njal Stormcaller, 10 random marines, bits. (not quite $100, but ~$70 seemed close enough)

And now, Pictures.

Just fyi the +20 on the points was due to me not being able to remove a biker after adding the attack bike. Hence -25 there. But that good run roll on the outflank and rhinos popping left and right was definately my downfall. If a 5 was rolled and not a 6 on the run my RP coulda melted some face. And with so many units I forgot to roll my speeders with HF in on turn 3 which could have helped. As well as gearing toward the 66% chance of an objective game (and expecting CSM

Fun game though, I rolled poorly compared to TI but a fun game. Not quite a way to start a vegas weekend but hopefully that's all the losing I'll be doing ^^

Absolutely. Look at it as getting it out of your system!

Looking at the pictures, my account to the trygon flipping the rhino was wrong. Must have been Hive Guard instead.

Now that I've seen your secondary models are also Space wolves, next time we play I'll be better geared for you! I didn't know for sure since we were supposedly keeping it secret, so both my CSM list (May it rest in piece, or be revived) and the Nid list were fairly take all comers. Definately not bringing a Tervigon to the party next time, what with Jaws being on an Initiative test.

Good luck in vegas, and enjoy the shows.

That last part was subtle. Enjoy the parade of tits in your face associated with bachelor parties in Vegas is what was actually meant.

We're both Engineering majors and I assume fairly well off as a result.
But placing a random bet?
Like... on Football? Or Horseracing? Or anything else? Thats why its called a gamble. The outcome is undetermined.

Maybe both of us enjoy 'games' that are worth more than bragging rights...or we have plenty of disposable money/money

It is good to see that there are others still play Money Matches. Good job.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Right.......

Because no one bets on random games......

Vegas must have missed that memo.

And sports bookies.

And pretty much any game of chance...chance being the opperative word!

One unit of Wolf Guard can select a land raider.

So did I. All my practice games were with chaos, and up until the bottom of turn three I thought I was toast.
Turn one was particularly scary, with a unit of stealers dying almost instantly.
If it had been anything other than killpoints im sure I'd have lost.
