So here is a first post of my Black Templars which has been an on again off again thing for a few months now, mostly off as real life distracts me but the need to scrape together 400pts for a Friday tourney with a mate at my local GW has me moving. This is the first stuff I have worked on in years short of a few Gaunts so I am feeling some... rust.

My list for that mini tourney (its actually 2v2 so 800pts a side split among 2 armies) consists of 9 Initiates and a Reclusiarch in a Rhino and a squad of 6 Initiates slogging on foot.

For the Reclusiarch I didn't want a normal old Chaplain model so I'm going with a Coteaz conversion, my first time using green stuff here is an early WIP shot after shaving the Inquisition symbols away, replacing the belt buckle area with a Templar cross (Which is a shaved down top of a banner pole) and doing an arm swap. Other work involves some patching of imperfections in the cape, a new chain on the hourglass/latern thing and a small extension of the fur collar around the back to hide some of the arm joint.

Next up is some WIP of the Rhino, interior paint in progress and a magnetized top for turret swaps when needed.

Close up of interior:

Continuing with magnets a WIP Venerable Dread with a magnetised torso as well as weapons. The magnets in the torso are only 2mm x 2mm but its enough that when connected you can pick it up by the body and the feet don't fall off even with some shaking. I love rare earth. This is actually from January before Uni/work kicked me in the nuts, will return to it once my small list is finished.

The base is a test of the style I wanted, kind of a sparse tundra base. Might add some snow when the time comes. The hole in the middle fits my Emperors Champ.

Finally some nothing shots, a bunch of Initiates in progress:

Also BITSSSSS

Still to come sitting here in bits/sprues are a Land Raider Crusader, Vindicator, 10 Terminators, Terminator Captain, AOBR Dreadnought, Emperors Champion, 20 neophytes and a bunch more Initiates.

A big thank you to Gearhead and BrotherTri who both sold me Templar/Marine related stuff. Great Dakka users.

I wanted to put together a few pictures of my process used for painting my Templars. The photos are just quick snaps and I am not too happy with the painting on display or the photography but I feel the method is sound for knocking out a bunch of marines in a minimal amount of time.

Firstly after assembly and priming I lay down a base coat of GW Charadon Granite.

Next I lay down a heavy wash of Badab Black

Then the waiting game begins and I assemble more stuff, once that is dry I give the models a quick and dirty drybrush of 1:1 Charadon Granite and Deneb Stone

Seems I forgot to take a few photos in between some steps. At this point any skulls, seals, pad details etc I give a coat of Deneb Stone, once the base coat is down I then wash them all lightly with Devlan Mud. This same process is done for all metal areas, guns, chains etc but obviously picked out in chainmail.

A further wash of Badab is applied to the metalic areas which i highlight back up the light/bone areas with Deneb Stone, at this point I also fill in any seals etc.
Using a Micron pen I add in lines of txt on all the seals
After that another highlight of 70:30 Deneb Stone and White is applies to the shoulders/skulls/seals, I use this to clean up the edges of the seals which may have too much "text" on them.

After that it is a matter of red highlights, attaching the backpack and cleaning up anything before basing

Then for the base I do a basecoat of Adeptus Battlegrey with a light wash of Badab and drybrush of Astronimican Grey. Since I am doing a dry tundra style base I then use a mix of winter green and autumn yellow static flock.

All in all as I refine this method I think I can start to punch these out at a rapid pace. I also need to keep practising D:

Very nice clean white you have. What's your recipe?

Painting is my excuse to not do work either.

These are great! The GK models capture the Templar look really well. Can't wait to see how this army turns out.

Originally I was going Deneb Stone > Devlan Mud > Deneb Stone highlight > Deneb Stone/Skull White 50/50 highlight

but then i just started doing a few more thin thin thin coats of white to blend it all. The camera is glaring a bit there I think though

I personally think all Templar kits should ship with GK heads... it would at least save me some money. Definitely a better look for them I think. I have a bunch lined up for some Terminators also.

Today I woke up to this

Well a box containing that

Thanks The Combat Company some resin bases (runic mountain from Secret Weapon) which look amazing
Some brass Bolter shells for bases
Gale Force 9 snow
MIG Weathering powder
and some more sculpting tools and brushes.

A definite must for Australians: http://www.thecombatcompany.com

Very happy hehe.

Beyond that I'm just working on my Initiates and snapping some better shots of the process so here we have...

After a black prime I put down a coat of Charadon Granite

After that it all gets a heavy wash of Badab Black

After that its a drybrush of 50/50 Charadon Granite/Deneb Stone

Still to come... alot.
