First:
I realize I'm not likely to be able to take these to tournaments
If you want to flame for my choice of materials, please dont bother posting

All of these models are made almost entirely from paper and cardboard.
I'm going for a color scheme similar to whats in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, with dark green team colors
I use a program called Pepakura Designer to unfold 3D models to be printed
Pictures are a bit low quality, I only have an iPod camera at the moment

Overlord:

I'm still deciding whether I want to add the cape and larger shoulderpads
The core of the staff is metal, the rest aside from the base is paper
The model was taken from DoW, edited to be buildable, then run through Pepakura

Monolith:

The paintjob feels a bit plain, but I'm not really sure what to add. I'm waiting to glue the pylons/guns and finish the details until I decide
The pivots for the gauss flux arcs are wood spheres, everything else is paper reinforced with cardboard
The portal door opens and the steps pivot
I used the template that is floating around

and a little preview of my next project:

I designed this one from sprue pictures

Wow, looks great! I'm very impressed with the Necron Lord, personally I'd deemed making paper infantry models impossible - I was wrong!
The Monolith also looks fantastic. You could easily mistake it for a real one.

Need proxies?

wow indeed.... this necron looks very good... when you do your next one...please let us see a little step by step... to see all the parts involved and how they look unassembled... i really like what you are doing!

here is what the parts look like in the program

I ended up not following the template in several places to help with the accuracy. If I ever build a new one, I would probably revise the template myself since a lot of it was uneven (the corners didnt fit properly, the circles were ovals, etc.)

Wow. I am blown away by your papercraft skills. The monolith especially looks better than the GW kit! I look forward to seeing more!

These are awesome - you can never go wrong with a necron. Try maybe making a lychguard or something. A night Scythe would be perfect to make - along with some of ur skilled 'tinkering' keep it up!

Take lots of pictures as you assemble the barge, looks interesting

really like the lord/monolith and i have to ask "why paper"?,,,,,, i personally use TP (toilet paper) as a GS replacement, mixed with superglue it dries harder than plastic!!!!

now THAT'S an interesting idea. random off topic:

whats the cure time on that material?
do you use 1 ply or multiple?

we use a similar technique on my RC planes. a pseudo fiberglass if you will, but I hadn't really found a good use for it for miniatures. I suppose wadding it up would work fine enough.

also, back on topic, whats the strength of the paper models using the cardstock? do you use a light coating of clear acrylic spray to strengthen it?

I just finished the template, I should have time to start building on friday

I like working with paper, and its really easy to make models that are very accurate to a 3D model
some of my old models:

you should be able to find templates for most of these by searching for paper starships

Rimmy wrote:also, back on topic, whats the strength of the paper models using the cardstock? do you use a light coating of clear acrylic spray to strengthen it?

with plain cardstock, the bigger models feel kind of weak, but when reinforced with cardboard they are quite sturdy.
so far I havent sprayed them with anything to strengthen, but I am looking for something to seal the paper better so the texture doesnt show through the paint

a thin layer of clear polycrylic thats been thinned out can probably do that for you. use too much and it'll soak through really fast though.

try the spray on clear varnish first.

Got some work done on the chassis, still need to make the plating on the bottom and sides

I finally have time to work more on this.
I got the thrusters and the crescent part finished and the spine mostly finished, it just needs plating on the bottom part and putty to fill the space on the edges.
I also have access to a lathe now, so I decided to make the back ridged part of the tesla destructors in plastic (so much easier and more uniform than sanding the edges of cardboard round)

I build the runed parts in 2 layers, the inner one provides the structure, and the outer layer has the runes cut out

its almost finished, just need to build the gauss cannon and the pivots for the thrusters, and do a bit more detail painting.

can anyone suggest a way to make the cracks appear like they are glowing? I've tried neon green paint, but it covers so badly that you cant really tell its there

Awesome work! If I hadnt seen the process with my own eyes Id of thought it the actual model at first glance!

As far as glowing, start with a darker green. those tend to cover better. Try the GW paint Snot Green as a base, then go to your fluorescent green. It will cover better over a similar color than just flat out of the pot. If you need to green it up or add more definition to the cracks once you painted it, use GW Wash Thraka Green.

Also, dont worry about multiple layers. Several thinner coats are better than one thick coat. Its something all painters soon learn to live by!

Thanks, that worked much better, although my paint dries a bit darker than I'd like (at least when inside)
Once I find my blacklight, i'm going to try taking a picture with it to see if it makes a difference

I got some more time on my dad's lathe yesterday, so I made a base for the barge. now I just need to find some glue that will actually stick to it
Whats the actual size of the base? I've heard 55mm and 60mm, the plastic stock I used was about 57mm

Incorporating Wet-Blending

Oooh if the blacklight works thatll be wicked!!

Overall its looking good! Wish i had a lathe to play with xD
Its gonna be a 60mm base, so the base as you have it will work great. On vehicles bases arent as important, as all game measurements are gonna be from the hull and/or weapons.

Found the blacklight, now i just need to find a source for blue UV paint for the guns

and took pictures of the monolith and lord
