Subject: Me Orkz Scratchbuilt Blog: most recent: looted tau Riptide and hamma 'ead
|

This is a first for a lot of things for me. Foremost, this is the first time I've ever put WIPs on the internets for all to see, so I'll try not to get offended when you guys comment about it . And please do comment on things that don't look quite right, or any suggestions really, I want these suckers to come out bad ass!
Basically, I just started building an ork army and as of last week started building my big mek's gifts to his battle bruddas. To me the models for buggies look pretty outdated and kinda lame, and while they served their purpose well when they were first released, it's time to move on....
This is my attempt to make three different [almost]unique warbuggies following the true spirit of the orks to loot the crap out of whatever they happen to get their grubby hands on
The first one is based off of a hummer template, and actually I stole a whole bunch of ideas (and embellished on a few) from dakkadakka's very own Artsoldier35 for this one.
The second one, inspired by Halo 3, will be a quad with one ork driving and one on the back with a rocket launcher
And the third will be a landspeeder conversion that's become somewhat famous 'round these parts
Anyway enough rabble, on to pics of mah first waghbuggy!
It's mostly cardstock, with a bunch of bitz from the trukk kit to help with detail. And the rokkit launcha is from the deff dread kit
Again, most of the ideas for this came from that dude that I mentioned up over there
I think varying thicknesses of plasticard (as the template recommended) would have probably yielded a better product
I also used the dabs of wood glue method for rivets, which turned out surprisingly nicely for a first time ever attempt
When it's fully painted there will be a bunch of blood splatter on the front to make it look like an unlucky marine tried to death or glory it and got splattered, leaving his meltagun jammed in the right headlight
I'm also considering putting the spikes from the trukk kit on the bumper and having an impaled marine stuck to it, though I think that may be going a bit overboard
I ended up tearing off the trukk "doors" and making some out of cardstock for this, they fit better and I can use the trukk doors on an actual trukk now
I also painted the roof. This is the first time I've ever done chipped paint, and while I haven't done any weathering yet (though all that I do with that is make it look dusty, as my models have desert-ish themed bases), but to me it doesn't look quite right. Do you guys have any tips on making chipped paint on ork vehicles look better?
Here's more pics of the roof if you guys can see what I mean... I dunno, I don't want to say it looks too plain... just, off.. In some way...
In an effort to make the bottom not boring I used a trukk chassis, though it's chopped up and the wheel axles are actually between the cardstock and chassis, rather than under the chassis like in the trukk kit
Also, having issues making plastic from a pen casing (axle extension) mend with the axle... The wheels are taking issue with staying attached and the only clear remedy to this is to bombard it with various glues and stack a bunch of minis around it to hold the wheel in place
Thanks everyone let me know!

Good stuff so far. Some of the best ideas are recycled ones. 'Da Humma is well done build. Art35 would be proud.

Thanks schank
I went fishing this weekend so I didn't get to do tooooo much BUT I started working on buggy numba 2.
Here's the rokkit launcha, stolen again from the deff dread kit.
This will be the thing with the chain that spins the rear axle/wheels (I dunno the correct terminology, but you should get the idea)
Here's the bike plus wheels on axles(toothpicks fit the trukk front wheel holes perfectly)
I really should pick up some fun tack so I can dry-fit everything better, but here's what would hold together on its own without any:
So I still need to make the "plastics" for the quad and orkify the hell out of it, but I've got a few ideas for that...
Buggy numba 1 still remains largely unpainted, so updates on that will still be a little while
Any comments or things that don't look quite right so far?

Mmmkay buggy #2 is fully built! Now as soon as it finally stops friggin raining I can get an undercoat on here and slap this bitch with some paint sauce
So here's the support for the plastics:
And here it is all finished up with the plastics on it:
I couldn't figure out for the life of me what to do with the left arm of the rokkit launcha guy, so I think I'm going to have him holding on to a chain or something with that arm (which is why it's angled somehwhat strangely behind him) It's still within a normal range of motion for an arm, and I already tried having it flailing wildly in the air(ork SOP), but that didn't look/fit quite right... Anybody have any better ideas for him?

Damn thats pretty fething cool. Great use of bits.
For the gunner. You could rotate the wrist out some and add a grip bar on the buggie for him to stablize himself with.

I've been researching Mega armored nobz and I've decided that they're freaking awesome regardless of how effective they may or may not actually be on the battlefield. The models are awesome too, but I'm sorry but 17 bucks a pop is just a little too steep for me...
I saw someone scratchbuilding some on here, but stupidly I didn't subscribe and I forget who it was, do any of you guys know who scratchbuilt mega armored nobz?
Also, for da' humma, does anyone have tips for painting a shattered headlight to look right? The usual blue or yellow for headlights would look weird I think since it's shattered... any ideas?

Wow. I love the ATV styled buggy. The humma looks more suited to be a trukk with rokkit launcha than a rokkit buggy.. Of all the things to loot I think I'm gonna start on one of these right away....
For painting the shattered headlight, maybe do a yellowish white, with cracks painted on (black with faux highlights underneath)?
Great work so far, I look forward to more.

@Sentinel I will definitely give that a try, thanks for the advice
@RSJake Thanks! And that's probably what I'm going to end up doing, though I'm debating between the bar or it may be easier to have him holding on to a chain that's secured to the quad, just because it would be less invasive to his arm and I'm not all that great with greenstuff yet
@CommissarKhaine Love that Mega grot! I just bought some aobr nobs off ebay to chop up and I'll look into some crisis suits maybe? or something similar for the armor, it'll prolly end up looking like something right in between those two, thanks dude
@MrTau Thanks!
Got some ground covered with painting, but it's still not done yet... I'll post up pics when it's all finished. Unfortunately I won't be around this weekend so finishing this sucker is gonna have to wait till next week

Thanks mullet steve!
I haven't made any progress worth writing about for the warbuggies, BUT I did make some Rokkz so that my boyz can make planetfal/blow crap up in apocalypse (if only I had an army for apocalypse)
They're made out of paper machet, glue, and sand. Only one of the single-engine rokkz is finished, the other two still don't have any detail paint complete yet
I've also made a pretty sweet discovery. Upon destroying a bic red pen for a gun barrel, I discovered that red ink makes an incredibly cool blood effect. The pics don't really do it justice, I really recommend you give it a try and see for yourself.
The ink is completely dry in those pics. It looks WAY better than my previous method for painting blood. I applied it with a toothpick, and this was my first couple attempts, so I didn't quite get the spatter look right, but I'm definitely going to use this from now on. Granted, it did take a solid day or two for the ink to dry completely, so don't touch the models for a couple days after doing it.

Those are some impressive wheels you've got. I really like the buggy. At first I was going to mention that the nob sits on the back and fires his gun, while a trusted boy drives him closer, but the I remembered you are making a buggy, not a bike. (Not that it matters terrible) It looks awesome.

Thanks everyone!
And I think this prolly will turn into a long-term plog... I have WAY too many ideas in my head right now... In fact I'm thinking of putting the third buggy on hold for a bit once I FINALLY finish painting buggies 1 and 2, and getting some of the other stuff done. I'll prolly change my title to reflect that.
Sorry for the utter lack of updates, but my power has actually been out for a solid week, since last Saturday we got hit with a really bad snow storm and I've been a drifter until the power finally came back on yesterday.
BUT partly because of that very storm I did get a good bit of painting done on the quad, and here's a little sneak peak:
Har har harr
more pics when it's completely done.

Really good looking Orky stuff for Meganobz I used a simple head swap with the AoBR Terminators for some nifty looted Terminators. The advantage is their cheap and easy to get hold off as well!

' DA HUMMA IZ DONE
'Bout time too, I been zoggin off too much lately
This is the last thing that poor battle brother Gallius saw before meeting the Emperor
The driver is certainly having a great time splattering everything in his path
I know that 'da humma is significantly larger than the quad and the actual buggy model, but in the military HMMWV stands for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, so I stand by my decision for calling it a buggy instead of a trukk. Though I might make a base for it with the dimensions of a regular buggy to use for gaming purposes... but I'll prolly be too lazy and have far greater ideas in my head at the moment...particularly in the trukk department
