Okay this is horse . So what limits exactly can GW exact upon anyone using the names of their products?
I mean none of the written work, none of the photos, all it had was unit names and stat lines. So what's next if I post a grey hunter's statline and point value in a sig on a forum somewhere am I gonna end up with a C&D too?

presumably they got C&Dd under some flimsy premise, standard GW practice. Nothing at all stopping another group of people picking up the baton (would be easier if Wolflair just used standard XML for their datafiles, but oh well)
either another group will pick up the files (like they did for 2.2c) or they wont, and Armybuilder loses a ton of users. Of course, people could just make their own datafile changes...

What the hell is this? On what grounds are they doing this? What... what on earth are they thinking? They're making software I paid for useless without offering an alternative? This is a serious new low for GW.

You won't, but the forum will. This is the reason places like Dakka don't allow the posting of rules, stats, points costs, etc, and why battlescribe repositories are like in some fething Internet black market.

No, it was different. All that happened before was that the datafiles weren't allowed to be uploaded to a specific site anymore, meaning users could still manually download the files from the ab40k website but couldn't do so automatically for a while.
Now GW is just shutting them down completely meaning no more updates. It's total BS.

You are wrong. that was a C&D against the website hosting the majority of the datafiles - if that got rid of the files, nothing major changes.
This is the people making the files saying they are not going to release any more. Completely different (and more severe) thing

And that's the risk when paying for something like army builder. If GW pulls their license, you don't get your updates.
There's a nice free alternative in battlescribe though.

Sorry to see it end.
Given how useful AB has been over the years giving players and TOs a quick and easy tool to make and verify lists I have to believe that the file updates will continue in some fashion. Someone will move to the torrent sites where GW hasn't been able to eradicate the piracy of its actual published materials.
Maybe someone in the legal department was looking for a quick win given how badly their one actual copyright infringement case is going for them at the moment.

I'll never really understand why websites listen to GW's stupid C&D orders. Okay, they shut down the website? Who cares it's the internet.. This is the same thing that happened to Vassal (Where the developers freaked out and actually thought C&D means anything which it doesn't).. Yet vassal is back.
Pretty easy to set up sharing with thousands of people via google docs nowdays (Or google drive that is).. Oh no a C&D!!! Time to simple change the owner of the document! Or the hundreds of other ways to avoid this BS..
Again, I don't understand why individuals care.. Follow the C&D and set up shop elsewhere. Or host it outside the US.
Oh well I guess, I won't be renewing army builder if this is the end.

This really sucks. I was just starting to feel slightly warmer toward GW after their Daemon update, upcoming Chaos Codex and the rumors of frequent rule updates in the future. Now I'm right back to not really caring if they go under or not.

Its all good. I've started using Excel again for my army creation. It forces me to pay better attention to whats written in my Army Book or Codex as well as what is in the rulebooks.
Don't know what I'll do with my 4 licenses though

Pretty sure someone else could take up the effort and go through the hassle of moving the new files around the internet if they wanted and learn to edit the ab files.
I think some of it is converting the 5th edition army builder files to full blown 6th is probably too much effort. Changing the force org stuff and allies is probably a huge undertaking for the software.

The post is from 2010, they simply edit the sticky as the information needs updating which doesn't change the post date. Version 1.00 was recently released for 6th Edition where they started the numbering over for the new rules.
Also from their Facebook page:
GW hath given the IP hammer. The maintainer group was issued a stop notice. So the maintainer group has decided to follow the request eliminating legal concerns.

6th ed update was well underway, if you have AB or grab a demo license you can grab the latest before it goes away.
