Subject: Going it solo - Battle for the Calix Sector - The Battle of Annon 9 - part 3 (fully painted)
Welcome to the rolling fields of Annon 9 once a peaceful backwater planet of the Imperium. Recently there has been disturbing sightings from the local populace of foul creatures running rampant on the moonlit fields surrounding the Cathedral city of Bustyrama. With one of the Emperors great Cathedrals possibly at risk an initial strike force of the Sisters of the Nights Rose has been tasked with investigating the rumours spreading out from Bustyrama. Either the populace will be reigned in or the source of the sighting exterminated and then the populace silenced, either way it’s not going to be good for those in question.
After the slaughter of the traitorous scum Canoness Markee sent out a message of warning back to Terra of the disturbing findings that had occurred on Annon 9, the enemy may have been defeated but was this the entirety of the Renegade band or were there more foes yet to be encountered.
The transmission was intercepted by the Strike Cruiser Sword of Contrition returning from a routine Xenos Intel gathering mission led by Inquisitor Mitra. The Strike Cruisers orders were changed and a new destination given to the Navigators, Annon 9, Calixis Sector.
Within days of orbiting Annon 9 more traces of the Dark Wolves Chapter were located on the planet surface, Inquisitor Mitra sent down a Kill Team to gather information by any means necessary. The Calix Sector is not a safe place for a lone Imperial Strike Cruiser. The mission is to gather information from the planet surface/ Sister of the Nights Rose and then report back to Terra on their findings.
After their defeat at the hands of the Mantis Warriors the Dark Wolves fell back licking their wounds. Their purpose in the sector was to sure the Animation Relic which was thought lost a millennia ago. The Relic has untold powers, there are whispers in the void that it has the potential to bring back those once lost in the field of battle its full potential is unknown as it has never been used so Imperial records say.
The Relic is said to be of an ancient Necron origin and is tainted by the chaos gods, once uncovered they will be alerted to its presence and come in force to reclaim what they deem as there's. The Calix Sector is in considerably more danger than Inquisitor Mitra could ever imagine.
The Dark Wolves requested further assistance from any passing Warbands with their considerably high amount of terminator armour available on board their vessel they have a strong bargaining chip as payment for any assistance.
Garrakk Skull Screamer Daemon Prince and his warband of World Eaters took the Dark Wolves offer of assistance up and arrived in the sector and deployed part of their force on Annon 9 to strike a bargain with the Dark Wolves. It wasn't just Garrakk that received the transmission Typhus of the Death Guard also received the communication but decided the relic would be more useful in his own hands and set down a small elite force on Annon 9 led by Lord Gringely to ambush the Dark Wolves and World Eaters. Why help the Dark Wolves when you can eliminate them and their allies and take all of the spoils of war.

Deployment
Spoiler:
The World Eaters deployed first taking the top table ledge and deployed in the top right corner near two objectives.
The Death Guard only had one objective in their deployment zone so the Defilers paired up to defend it.
The Plague Marines deployed on the other side behind cover so they could make a rush to a number of objectives, the Plasma Squad deployed in cover in the building. The Lord is in the Rhino with the eye.
Final deployment looked like this.
Turn 1
Spoiler:
The Death Guard failed to take the initiative.
World Eaters objectives
Scour the Skies
Secure Objective 4
Big game Hunter
The Grey Hunters move out of cover to start heading towards objective two on the right while keeping objective four this turn.
The rest of the World Eaters move out on force, The Vindi and Rhino on the left make sure to capture objective five.
None of the World Eaters weapons are in range this turn apart from the Quadd Gun who cant see anything.
At the end of the turn the World Eaters have three VP's objective five and objective four (one VP for both sides secure objective 4)
There's not much the Death Guard can do they are out of range of all of the scouring objectives this turn the Plague Marines manage to take a wound off the Daemon Prince hiding behind one of the guns.
One of the defilers gets a good shot in with their battle cannon destroying the weapons on both Rhino's

Demolitions
With Big Game Hunter and Kingslayer the Vindicators go after the Rhino with the Lord in and between them manage a destroyed weapon result, pretty dismal for their first round of shooting.
The World Eaters on the far left swing round the building to take objective 6
The other squad in their Rhino take a bumpy trip along a wall to secure objective three in the centre of the battle field. The Daemon Prince joins them ready to charge the Plague Marines in the building for shooting at him last turn, he in fact fails to make the charge but goes unharmed but is left in a really bad position in the middle of nowhere.
The Dark Wolves on the right run to capture objective two.
End of turn and the World Eaters have objectives two, six and three.
In the Death Guard's turn the Plague Marine squad in the Rhino with Lord disembark and capture objective six from right out of the world Eaters hands. The other Rhino was going to go through the building in front of it so it could unload its Plague Marines to rain down melta on the DP but that had to change as it Immobilised its self on the wall so they had to advance slowly round the side instead.
Both of the defilers missed with their battle cannons this turn one tried for the Daemon Prince and the other the Grey Hunters. The plasma Plague Marines in the building did well though and managed to take another two wounds off the daemon Prince.
At the end of the turn the Death Guard has objective six for one VP.

No prisoners
The World Eaters third turn and in victory points they are leading by a long way. The Grey Hunters keep adavancing on the right flank while keeping hold of objective two.
In the centre of the battlefield the Rhino with the berzerkers in positions itself on front of objective three ready to take some incoming fire power in the Death Guards turn.
The Daemon Prince decides to leave the Plasma Plague marines alone and goes for the Immobilised Rhino which would give the World Eaters the Big Game Hunter objective.
On the left flank things are hotting up. One Vindicator takes out 4 Plague marines while the other misses the unit and it scatters into the building with the Plasma Plague Marines killing one.
The Berzerkers charge into the Lord and the Plague Marine squad, they all manage to get in without loosing any members of the squad to overwatch.
The Champion challenges the Lord who cuts him up badly with his Lightning Claw. Meanwhile the rest of the combat is a stand off seven Berzerkers against two Plague Marines and not one causality!
The Daemon Prince munches the Rhino without issue.
At the end of the turn it looks like this
The World Eaters gain a Victory point for Big Game Hunter and objectives two and three (x2).
Now we turn to the Death Guards turn which sees the arrival of the Heldrake. With the DP being right on the Death Guards table edge with one wound left it was the most sensible place to bring on the flying beast. That one vector strike did actually wound and went past the DP's 5++ save but he saved on his feel no pain.
One of the Defilers managed to crack open the Rhino on the central objective spilling its contents of Berzerkers. The plasma Plague marine squad and the Heldrake had a good BBQ with them leaving four. One of the plasma guns exploded though killing its holder.
The Defiler then charged in failing to do anything.
On the right the other Defiler killed off a few of the Grey Hunter Squad but not enough for a morale check.
In the bloody combat on the left the two Plague Marines died and the Lord took a wound from the Berzerkers but he did take two out himself.
The Plague Marine squad to the right took a couple of pot shots with their melta guns at a Vindicator but failed to penetrate at long range.
This is how the table looked at the end of the turn.
The Death Guard scored a VP for No prisoners by killing a Rhino which also gave them a VP for first Blood.

Overwhelming Firepower
This turn after warming up on the Rhino the DP jumps over and charges into close combat with the Nurgle Lord.
With the Black Mace he has a ton of attacks and reduces the Lord down to one wound, so close. In return due to the DP's high initivate the Lord powers up his powerfist and gets a lucky hit in removing the DP's head.
One of the Vindicators reverses back to re-claim objective five and fires off a shell at the Plague Marines with melta guns in front of him but misses killing all but one of the plasma Plague Marines in the building
On the right hand side of the battle the other Vindicator swings round and fires off a shot at the far right Defiler glancing it. The Grey Hunters remaining plasma gunner fires at the defiler and manages to take it down, ka boom.
The Quadd gun actually hits and takes a hull point from the Helldrake, first useful thing its done all game. and in combat the Defiler kills a couple of Berzerkers who are desperately trying to get their crack grenades in the right hole.
On the victory points side they gain one for objective 5.
Onto the Death Guards turn and the Lord kills a Berzerker in combat while the melta Plague Marine squad takes out the Vindicator by objective five.
In the middle the Defiler kills the last two Berzerkers in combat and the lone Plague Marine makes a dash towards objective one as there is a good chance it might become valid soon.
The Heldrake fails to kill any of the Grey Hunters
With the DP dead that gives the Death Guard Kingslayer and also kill the warlord this turn.

The combat on the left is rather boring this turn with no casualties the Berzerkers cant get past the lords armour saves. The Berzerkers rhino sees more action this turn as it reverses backwards to claim objective five.
In the centre the Vindicator and Grey Hunters put a few glances on the Defiler and the Quadd Gun fishes it off.
One VP this turn for objective five.
The Nurgle Lord is getting fed up at this point and switches to his Power Fist and kills the remaining Berzerkers.
The remaining Plague Marines with melta guns finish off the Rhino.
While the last member of the plasma Plague Marine squad gets ready to secure objective one if the need arises. The Heldrake flies off the table edge this turn.
Objective six is secured this turn by the Lord and the Death Guard also gain a VP from Blood and Guts for killing the reaming Berzerkers in combat.

The Heldrake comes on this turn and fails to kill any of the Grey Hunters, meanwhile the lord goes for a wonder in hope of getting line breaker if there is a turn seven.

After Thoughts
Spoiler:
The only thing I think I got wrong is the Quadd gun was firing at normal ballistic skill against ground targets. Other than that it was quite an exciting game the Maelstrom Mission was really good fun although the World Eaters got off to a cracking start.
I think 7th is going to be a good edition maybe not for tournament play but if you're sensible and don't try and spam things that you know are broken its going to be a very flexible edition, reminds me a lot of 2nd Ed in quite a few ways.
Ooh, I like the conversions in the death guard army!
1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)

Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)
