Well lets give this a go and see how we fare.

Be better if the people who vote also provide a comment -- it is a discussion board after all.

Ideally those who vote would be those who've read/bought the magazine, but we can't really enforce that so keep your internet poll broomstick of skepticalness ... ? ? ..... or whatever to hand when reviewing the results.

be extra handy if you could say which bits you really did/didn't like, what you'd like tweaked or added and so forth.

ta.

For me a solid 8 -- perhaps 7 might be fairer but the free model and a burst of joy at the return of the larger monthly format swings me to being generous at the moment.

I like the overall appearance of the magazine -- the layout and design work for me -- nice use of white space.

I'd prefer the letters page -- the inclusion of which I am very happy about for reasons one cannot fully understand oneself , perhaps it's nostalgia once again -- to be either prior to the "planet warhammer" section -- although one understands why this isn't the case -- or perhaps further back in the magazine.

But that's hardly a deal breaker.

Very pleased with the additional rules , even if they're not for games that one currently plays. One might, at some future point and -- much like battle reports for systems that you do not play -- one can glean info even from these or might even be inspired. Future issues will, one assumes, perhaps be a little lighter here but we'll wait and see.

That said I hope someone somewhere is going to start up a new index for the magazine, cataloging what rule is in what issue.

...hmm ..?

An article system

Ha, you'd have to be a right mug to get roped into doing that wouldn't you eh ?

It's only one or two steps above being a forum moderator and who'd want to be like those poor, morally mutated freaks with their malnatural desires and borderline illegal habits , hobbies and artifices .....

..... err.......

anyway ....

Happy the tale of 4 wargamers warlords is back, wee bit short perhaps but it is the 1st one so fair enough, see how it goes.

Hall of Fame and army of the month -- both cool with me -- the foldout was well used here IMO.

Nice to have something to aim for if you're into your painting.

Golden Demon and Illuminations -- cool, happy with those, ideally the illuminations section might not always feature art from the latest release -- but we'll see how that goes, and if it does... well... it makes sense.
Perhaps they could use this to show "deleted scenes" or art that didn't get used ?

Battle report -- nice.

I'd prefer a few more words than pictures here -- the caveat being that here this is mainly as I've seen most/all of the models used loads of times , especially in the past year -- if it was different/new/unusual forces perhaps I'd feel different.

I hope they do cycle through all the systems -- including the LOTR/HObbit ones -- and I do get the odd twinge of envy when looking at how nice the tables are/can be.

Ultimate guide -- hadn't really read that much about Knights -- prefer my 40k sans super 'eavies etc etc -- but this was cool. Again I hope this delves into all the systems.

That's about as far as I've read thus far -- which in itself is a vast improvement over the weekly WD which was sometimes "read" prior to getting home on the bus or, one one occasion before one had managed to get to the till and pay -- and there's bits I've only skimmed and intend to go back to.

Which is nice.

Let's hope this is the start of something good.

I'd agree with the 8/10. It's nice, and big, and has lots of pretty pictures. I would have preferred a bigger focus on 40k, but it's only the first issue. The freebee is a fantastic addition to the issue, and even though I don't play chaos in either game, I'll still paint the sucker up just for the hell of it.

Altogether, something I'm much likely to purchase with greater regularity than the previous one, which I only got if it had info on a particular release I was interested in.

Leaving aside the free mini (fantastic as it is) and talking purely about the magazine, I was definitely impressed, but even more than that I felt potential. I said something similar in the N&R thread, but there are a lot of articles in here, maybe too many at the expense of length in some cases, but that suggests to me that the team are looking to really tailor the mag and tweak the content until it's 'just right'. I wouldn't be at all surprised if after the first 5-6 issues we start to see some 'regular' features significantly altered or gone entirely, just as they start acting on feedback which, from the active invitation to write in with comments on the letters page, they are definitely willing to hear (another nice change!), and likewise, I expect some features to get a lot longer or more in-depth. The Batrep was nice, as was To4W, but both could have done with another page or two... though to be fair, given the relative shortness of the battle in the former, there probably wasn't enough there to stretch much further.

Aside from the Paint Splatter articles that I didn't get much from (simply as the GW house style is pretty much at odds with my own approaches and methods), I can't think of anything I disliked. I loved the extended Deathwatch section that covered the rules design process, the minis and the artwork as one package, that's something I've sorely missed in what I read of the last year or so of Weekly as there often wasn't space for it. Letters page, great and a very positive move, even moreso when they printed some actual criticism and responded to it. I felt the GD section was a bit short and samey, while it was all top notch stuff, 5-man squads of blue, yellow and green Marines is something we've all seen a hundred times before. I'd prefer it if they'd taken stuff from across the event, thrown in a character or vehicle entry or two just to mix up rather than focusing on just one category, but I can see the logic. I did appreciate the 'what the judges said' boxouts, interesting to see what they look for and pick up on.

The presentation and production I really can't fault. Excellent photography, nice printing and paper, the layouts were all nice and organised, and it's awesome to have artwork on the cover again, I hope they keep that up. I'd give it a solid and promising 8 without the free mini, though with that factored in I feel I got my money's worth and then some; I doubt that will be a regular thing, but who knows? If they can stick something plastic on the cover every 2-3 months, even if it's just something like the free Stormcast with the AoS launch rather than an £18 character mini, that definitely ups the value.

All in all, though, very good stuff.

I give it a seven.

I stopped reading the Dwarf when the Orks were released for 6th (I think!?!? maybe 5th???) having started with issue 188 (release of the nids for 2nd ed).

I moved on to PP games, as well as plenty of other odds and sods, but have recently been dipping my hand back in to fantasy having got burned out on hyper comp games.

Picked up the three month sub to see if they had turned it around (though according to the small print on my DD agreement I have to take the year regardless, which seemed rude).

All told its a lot better than the solo issues, and the end of the last monthly era (I picked up a few here and there for commission projects and so forth).

I think it still falls down as a "hobby" magazine, but it was good to see the return of proper designer notes and the extra content for the various games.

The painting guides are still a massive disappointment, but its hard to know how to convey high tier painting advice in the written form. Painting guides that are more than just use these colours in this order are better for video I guess.

Nice to see a "proper" battle report.

Tale of four gamers wasn't a patch on the original, but hopefully that will develop as time goes on.

Didn't feel the adverts were too intrusive which was nice. This was no "giant" issue.

Blanchitsu is great, as is the player army (though that should have been an epic army :p)

So, a good first issue, but plenty of places to grow to make it better.

I'd love to see a split into three "tiers", starter, experienced and advanced, with a bit of everything for each. This felt like a starter to mid level magazine. Us old gits want a bit more meat I think.

Will be interesting to see what the next few bring.

...and you will know me by the trail of my lead...

I'll say a good solid 7 (if I actually wanted the free mini i'd have said 8, but it's just nice to have rather than something i'd have been after anyway),

decent mix of content, well put together, enough shiney paper that paying £5.99 doesn't seem out of order compared to other glossy magazines

I'd perhaps like slightly less spread and a touch more depth at least in some of the articles

I'm really pleased to see some letters again, hopefully this will stick and actually print some challenging content as well as the obligatory I love everything stuff

one miss for me is that some of the box game content that people might want to cut out and stick in the game box are backed onto content for other games rather than general articles or adverts (eg the white dwarfs stats for AoS back onto the Blackstars Stormcloud attack description etc). It's not going to be an issue for people who keep all their magazines, but it would be good to have an easy cut out and keep option

The foldout was well done

I picked mine up at the local GW late in the day, and unlike the free sigmarite issue they had plenty left, not sure if that's because the higher price meant less folk just bought it for the mini, because the got more in or a mix of the two

i'm not going to get every issue but i'll certainly pick it up now and then

Cozy cockpit of an Imperial Knight

8 out of 10 for me, they're kicking things off with a bang and they haven't disappointed aside from two things.

I was pleasantly surprised with the article on the new Deathwatch codex, not just showcasing it, but also listing the thoughts of the artist.

The retro-view of an older issue of WD was also a welcome one, I think I have that one on my shelf somewhere, so I'll be going through that one after I'm done with this one.

I was a bit disappointed by the content for Stormcloud Attack, which is nothing more than a data card for the Corvus, was hoping for a new mission or something! And the Imperial Knight article, which is just a rundown of the fluff bits from the two codex books and wherever else they were featured in the meantime.

8 here - so far.... a week in and I haven't finished reading it is a positive in my book. The free figure was a bonus - tho I'd never have paid £18 for it.

Nostalgia hits are good - there was something of the "feel" of "old" White Dwarf - whatever that means. Either there was a sense of self deprecating humour there that touched a vein, or I'd had too much beer. Tale of 4 was a little thin, and 3 iterations of "you'll have to wait until next month to find out what's next..." could have had more variety - but that IS being picky. Liked the big eldar army layout. Very much like the rules add ons: haven't read them all yet but definitely a sense of - yep - this is potentially useful....

Good start - keep it up lads & lasses.

Another 8/10 from me. I really can't add much; it's all been said by others! A longer Tale of 4... would have been great, and actual turn diagrams in the batrep would have helped a lot.

That said, I've still not actually finished reading it. So.... looking forwards to next month!

I'll be honest, I only really bought it for the mini. I haven't really cracked it open yet.

That being said they included probably the coolest of the Bloodbound Heroes in it.

For that reason alone 8/10....probably be higher if there are decent hobby articles inside.

Still reading it, but I give it a 8 - the cover mount pushes it over the edge for me. Not only do you get a free Slaughterpriest, which has free Age of Sigmar rules online, but in the magazine they have how to paint it, the rules to use it in Gorechosen and Silver Tower, and he features heavily in the AoS battle report. That makes the model feel like an actual part of the first issue rather than an afterthought.

My one complaint is that a lot of the text is a bit amateurish. It just seems so excited about everything, with an overuse of exclamation marks (see Sprues and Glue on page 121!) and childish colloquialisms like "Phew!" I get that they are aiming for an air of informality, but I think it skirts a bit too far past goofy.

Also feel like the boxed games section could do better introducing the games to non-players. I don't know anything about Assassinorum, except that the game is repetitive with no variety, so I don't really understand the significance of how the new rules change and expand the game - do they fix the variety issue and make the game worth getting now? It's not a deal breaker, but it feels like a missed opportunity to sell a non-player on a game they may enjoy specifically due to the additions in the magazine.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

So my copy finally arrived. Don't quite know what took so long, but it arrived in a cardboard protector and the mini was note broken as some people have found, so that's nice.

Honest opinion? It's a White Dwarf, and I mean that in a good way. It reminds me of the old White Dwarfs, even if they're gone a little wild with their text-boxes and varying script sizes (c'mon layout guys - a little less caffeine and a little more discipline!). The Battle Report looks like a proper report, although I do kinda wish that there were maps rather than just a picture of the board. Even a top-down photo would be better than what's there, but given we've seen the horrors of what BatReps can be (the 2nd Ed Sisters of Battle BatReps from ages past... where I was reading the 'summary' from each player at the end of the report and realised that there was no 'report', just an isometric picture of a table with some call-out boxes as the 'report') this will do.

I liked the DW art section, and the look at the sprues were good, as were the boardgames sections - I love how Space Hulk even got a mission - and a letters section is nice even if the replies read like carefully generated "hyped up" corporate speak, like a GW store employee is writing them all in a breathlessly enthusiastic manner (but that's just my cynicism talking).

Overall this isn't something I would buy myself as it's just not the kind of thing I want or need out of GW these days. I'll probably get the second one because I want to see a 40K BatRep (although I fully expect armies made up of just what the studio has painted, so all the squads will have random assortments of weapons/items that no one would actually take) and if they ever release a AUD$50 mini on the front cover then I'm in, but yeah, I can take it or leave it with this. But it's good that it feels like White Dwarf again.

Rather good read I'll admit and I find myself still flicking through it momentarily on the loo. Even though the battle report does not interest me at all I'd give this a good 7/10.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I voted Other(everyone likes cheap kitchens), because I feel the need to give it two different ratings.

For this specific issue, 6/10, because I have little use for much of the content. I don't play AoS, and I'm still annoyed enough about how AoS came to be that I can't just read the articles for fun as I used to with LotR stuff which would have been the old WD equivalent. I'm not fussed about GW's various boardgames, so additional content for those means nothing to me. The model is cool, but again I have no use for it. The Knights article is fine, but nothing new if you've read the codex - still, I much prefer when they put in that level of effort to disguise the adverts than the utterly transparent "buy our awsum stuffz" level of WD weekly and monthly for a few years before that. Blanchitsu, the Kill Team feature and conversion article, Deathwatch design notes, reader models, featured army etc were all good stuff, with the KT and Deathwatch content being particular favourites.

The second rating is a tentative one of the overall format of nuWD: 8/10. While I can't find any joy in the AoS content, having the "Tale of X Somethings" format back is good and the battle report was far superior to anything in recent offerings(although personally, I still miss the days of top-down drawn maps with little unit icons). Regardless of whether I have any use for them and the minor quibbles about layout, the inclusion of so much extra rules content for the various boxed and board games is very positive; it's almost like having Chapter Approved back again. The actual physical product was well made and seems equivalent in quality to other magazines of similar price. Letters are nice to see again, even if they are a tad fawning(which I suppose is only to be expected).

If it maintains that overall 8/10 over the 3 month trial sub, I'll likely keep it running on the assumption that the 40K content will be more expansive in future issues and that the new SGs once released will get similar rules support.

To get me to upgrade to the 12 month sub, I'd echo what others have mentioned and say I'd prefer slightly fewer articles overall with a bit more depth to each one. I'd also like to see terrain articles/features that are a tad more realistic for the end user; sure, seeing the big awesome WHW tables is great for folk who can't get there to see them in person, but the reality is most readers - hell, even most clubs - simply can't afford to replicate those designs. Rather than pretending the only folk reading are Whales from a sales perspective, it would be nice to see GW figure out roughly how many of their terrain kits your average customer could afford, then put out articles showing people how to use those kits along with more traditional terrain building materials and techniques to create playable boards with them.

I loved it, While Im way beyond the painting articles GW puts out, they are nice. The conversion kit is nice. and I loved how they said you can just buy a tactical squad for the rest of the weapons. In older they would say "BUY MOAR" but no they said you can use a tactical squad or a sternguard.

A solid 8. I will use the freebie in kings of war, and I liked the layout. Illuminations is great, even if I want more fantasy. Ignored blanchitsu as i despise most of his work. Too grainy. the newer age of Sigmar art (also despite me having resentment over the world breaking) is excellent and that is what should be showcased instead of blanches art.

Ok so I gave it a 9.

That's higher than it would have been if not for the free mini on the front cover. I couldn't however ignore that and it's a great model that's worth 3 times the cover price.

Without the model it would have been a 7.

That is also harsher than it probably should have been but I can't forgive the typos - somebody really should have proof read it.

Otherwise without spelling errors it would have been a solid 8.

To get it higher than that for me personally they need to bring back the advanced painting guides which I believe they are doing.

So overall a good solid mag but they just need to take more time to proof read it (it just looks unprofessional to me) and add a tiny bit more content for established painters.

Otherwise all the key ingredients are there, I like the layout (although it does now look like a computer games mag) and it was a great effort.

I agree about the "potential". But the execution wasn't there yet. Super short on word count articles, the font and layout seems sterile and boring, rules for Gorechosen models (a game mode, sorta, even) but not even a sample turn or anything to present the game.

I hope they'll one day bring back the green-black dataslate transmission look for 40k, yellowed parchement backgrounds for AoS (Fantas ;_ blurbs, use the font of early 2000s German WD and concentrate on fewer but wordier articles. A few tipps and tricks added and the piece on the Warhammer World table would've been fantastic. The designer interview and the blurb about Nagash needed to be at least three times as big, err, long.

Overall I give it a 7 and I think they're on the right track and the articles will evolve from the scattershot low-depth approach of thia issue. While we probably won't go back to the glory days where there might've been a campaign/exp ruleset for Gorechosen added via WD or an in-depth Index Astartes created because some guy has a really sweet Flesh Tearers army (or full Mordheim rules and B-MOVIE ZOMBIE ATTACK!1! for Necromunda ), so far I think I won't regret my twelve month subscription.

For me, I gave it an 8. I have really only flipped through it and I haven't read it all. Weekly WD, I'd have it all read by now.

Personally, I'm hoping that there is a Chapter Approved in the future. Though, the redone Blood Angels is making me think that we won't need that as much.

I give it a hearty 8. There's room for improvement, as there always will be, but I'm very satisfied with it. The writing quality is solid, the photography's gorgeous, the variety of articles are interesting, and coming with rules for a whole bunch of the GW boxed games was a great move. Also including designer's notes for Deathwatch and their art is pretty much exactly what I've wanted to see for years now. The free mini doesn't hurt either!

It's a step in the right direction, but then we all knew the weekly was a bad idea when it was first announced, took GW two years to cotton on?

The layout is a bit busy for my liking, too many text boxes layered over one another. The content is better, a return to the "good old days".

Best part is the extra content for the board games, hoping for more of this in the future.

Worst part, all the AoS stuff, but that's down to my personal taste.

Of course the free mini is nice, but not one I was interested in, and we won't get that month in and month out. Hopefully they will refine the format a bit more as they go. Will wait to see what people say about the next issue before spending the best part of £6 on it.

There wasn't a lot of useful things for me, other than the article on the Knights (mostly rehash of the existing material), the DeathWatch (more rehash of existing material), and new ways to play Execution force that will probably force me to buy a Chaos Daemons starter box.

I think they are moving in the right direction and I look forward to Issue 2.

Except for the AoS part, I say you have a fair assessment of the book. It's good, but nothing great and so much room for improvement. I would say maybe even a 6.5. Just a bit too much clutter to give it a 7. I was really disappointed that here was no Lord of the Rings stuff though.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
