Between working on my Roughriders I managed to get another couple of Ratlings put togther, getting my total to five which means my stormtroopers become veterans and I can add Marbo and ratlings to my list. Of course I've never used either in a game before..but hey..a tournament is the best way to learn how to use a unit right?...right?

Anyway here is a shot of all five ratlings with a basecoat and a few shots of a test paint scheme for them.

Thanks for looking guys, C&C is always welcome

Cheers,

I see you decided to lose the blades at the end. Makes more sense for Ratlings I guess. Though it that case you might want to consider getting rid of the one at the end as well.

Yeah I was definitely looking at cutting the blade off, a couple of the arm poses have the stock tucked right up under the arm so the blade is hard to get at but it would probably be pretty hard to see where I cut it off anyway.

What do you think about adding a magazine of some kind to the rifle?

I have to say I'm pretty stoked with how the bases turned out, having some of the ratlings standing a cm higher than the others makes the unit look a lot deeper and interesting when they are clumped together.

Cheers guys,

The problem with adding magazines would be that you might ruin the slick apperance of the Kroot rifle. Whatever you add, it will make it look less efficent IMO and that's not even counting the problem that you would have to find magazines which actually looked good on the guns.

Maybe instead, add some form of spare ammo to the bodies.

True, I might raid the kroot sprue for some of the pouches and ammo clips, I do like the musket styling of the kroot rifle.

Sniper rifles of the tech level the kroot rifle looks to be from would probably be single round loaders anyway right?

What's your opinion on covering the forearm spines with GS fur to make them more ratty than krooty (if krooty is a word)?

I kinda like the spikes. Makes them look more mutant and less ratty. And the way you build the models there aren't even any fur parts showing anyway.

Had time today to get work done on the rough riders, got the lance arms and rein holding arms sorted, havn't glue them to their saddles as there is till a lot of painting to be done, heres the pics.

and a shot of the sergeant, sorry the basecoat hid most of the detail

I still havn't decided on a way of showing the explosive tips on the lances any thoughts?

Cheers

I'm not a big fan of the lances. They look too knight-y in comparison to the rest of the models. Isn't there some other way?

I'm ok with the body of the lance just not the blade at the end, I'm stuck trying to think of the right kind of tip that will show it's explosive nature without being too bulky, the best I've come up with so far is mounting a mortar shell from theIG heavy weapon sprue at the end. I might try it on an extra lance I have and see how it comes out.

If you have any thoughts feel free to post em!

You could add some kind of wiring/wire on the side of the body of he lance andthen just have a small gs blob or cube thatit is attatched to, maybe with a kind of button/trigger on the end to make it look like it explodes on impact.

Okay, I've been on a bit of a hiatus 2011-14

I got nothing. While I want to build a unit of Rough Riders for my Nurgle army at some point I really don't have any idea how I could build something like exploding lances.

The riders look very starwars Empire/storm trooper, is that the idea or is it just me?

@cosmic pixie - I've been thinking of the wire along the lance, need to find some that isn't too thick as to overpower the lance itself, as for the explosive head I am still to try the mortar or HK missile tips ( damn my fiance for dragging me out to a party! )

@ Anung un Rama - No worries Rama, the Idea Machine has to run out gas every know and then! I did toy briefly with hammers like the ork tank hunters use, the Roughriders have to get close to use their lances anyway so why not big arse explosive hammers? what do you think, I'm not too into buying a bunch of tank hunters to steal the arms off but I could probably kitbash something together....

@young_logan - Could be the armoured legs which was just me not wanting to GS 5 sets of new riding legs (though I ended up having to do a lot of GS work anyway) If its the heads I just wanted them to match with all the helmeted stormtroopers I had. So long-winded way of saying that it wasn't intentional, and after a paint the resemblance might be a lot less.

Rough Riders with Tankhammers. Intriguing.
Personally, I'm still working on how I could make exploding scythes work.

Ok, so I don't have enough missiles or mortars to outfit the entire squad so will be searchin my bitz box for the right peice , will have a go at a tankbusta hammer at some point in the week tho. Got a ton of work done on the cold ones though, all but one painted, all based properly and the riders coats sanded and ready for paint also GSd the black fist onto the sergeants banner.

Here is a pic of the one finished rider

and here is the promised groupshot , sorry its not the greatest, I tried several times today to get a good shot with decent light but my painting room (aka the dungeon) is just too dark so here is the best of the lot

It wasn't till I tried to fit the entire army into the frame that realised how big it has grown and how much an IG army really can outnumber a GK army.

Cheers

So as a relief from the riders I had another go at the chaplain. I needed a plastic stormbolter and ordered some online from a bits seller I found, they arrived and were SW marine bolters so had the wrong ammo clip, crap.
Luckily I am painting a marine army for my local club and decided to lop a stormbolter off one of the AOBR termies, of course I had to replace it and have given the termie the leftover autocannon from the AC conversion I did my GK dread, of course the cannon is probably to big but it can only look cooler to have bigger guns right?

Anyway heres the pics of where I am with the GK chaplain, I had no scenery for it's base so I slapped him on a big arse rock, He now towers over his fellow termies which is fine, but I'm most happy with how the wrist mounted stormbolter came out. Other than discovering that the GK bolter is slightly smaller in every way than the plastic one it looks the same...only bigger

and a shot with a normal GK terminator for comparison

C&C is welcome

and don't worry Rama I will drill out the barrels as soon as I buy a new drill bit

Finished with the riders (enough to play with anyway) so apart from a few more washes and some highlighting I am able to go on with the last two ratlings and get to playing!

Lol, it's always something with you huh Rama?

I am still undecided with how I'm going to do the lances, I figure I can cut them down/add explosive tip/swap for tankbusta hammer when I have the luxury.

At the moment I am doing my best to get the army painted to tabletop standard and get in some practice with the list before an upcoming tournament.

Of course if you have had any ideas about what I should do with the lances I am all ears.....

How about a small bundle of grenades tied to the end of the lance, with a detenator cable running down the length of the weapon.

It would then still be bladed, for use as a conventional weapon, but with a one-shot explosive weapon.
