Subject: Re:Reaper Miniatures' Bones figures has a Kickstarter
The Bones version of Kaladrax is going to sell for $75 US?!!!
(The Kickstarter was $10!)
The Auld Grump. or... maybe it's coming out in metal, too?
Am I misremembering, or during the campaign, was it implied that Kaladrax came with a female necromancer-type miniature?
It is a huge figure, it probably uses just as much material as Nethyrmaul the Undying.. But instead of height you have width and length.. Kinda sucks it will cost that much for a extra one, but I am glad I got it before they came out..

Lots of work on the steel molds would be my guess as to why so pricey - a separate mold for each wing, the head, each leg, probaby two for the base....
As for the female figure with Kaladrax - Not just implied - stated outright!
Let me rummage a bit.....

If it were metal it would be more than $75, Ebonwrath and Kaladrax's first version are currently $70 and are less material.
Reaper is honest and prices are based on production costs and reasonable profit. Considering any other company that would produce a comparable dragon would charge $100+ a price tag of $75 sounds fair.

I'll bet Reaper is just a bit regretful that they only priced it at 10 bucks. It's probably the most under-priced figure in the lot. Even the art didn't quite capture how big it is.
I almost wish I'd bought one now except that I know I'd never actually paint or use it.
Consider yourself especially super-lucky if you got one for $10!
Hokey smokes - according to Reaperbryan Kaladrax would weigh almost ten pounds in metal!
That thing is massive!

Most are - and the ones that aren't inexpensive would be insanely expensive in metal. (Ten freakin' pounds of tin?!)
More likely, though, the insanely expensive ones would just not be made....
More typical miniatures for humans, elves, and dwarfs are in the $2 to $3 range.
This brute, and the other dracolyche Nethyrmaul are just plain huge.

Has anyone have a pic with the 2 dracoliches side-by-side for comparison. Got the award for the studio paint job and havent decided which of the 2 I want.

I got one in the KS, but I lost a lot of enthusiasm for Bones' ability to create large beasts now. I love Bones, but for just a bit more, I could get a Crusader, a model of superior quality that I can assemble as I wish. $75 seems like a lot for a creature with throat ribs and out-of-style chunky mummy guts because they couldn't solve the chest cavity issue. $50? Sure. $75 just seems like a lot for a model that will always feel like a compromise in quality somewhere.
I assume Nethyrmaul is similarly priced? I hope Cthulhu isn't too expensive. That figure was such a "meh" it was heartbreaking.
Really? Have you seen the price lists for the rest of the bones. They are half the price or less of comparable metal figures. 75 bucks seems like alot to some, but if you look for resin or metal of comparable size, you're easily in the range of $150-200.
Cheap is relative. but bones prices are is significantly cheaper than comparable models.

They haven't shown them together (yet)

I have painted Cang by Cool Mini Or Not as a commission - $300 retail at CMON, and I do not feel that he was over priced.
Kalathrax, there, looks to be much the same size.
$75 does not seem overpriced to me, either....
But I got him for $10!

You probably are willing to pay $75 for a nice, large dragon, even if he does have flaws and assembly issues. For me, that price just crosses a line of price for quality. It doesn't matter what PP or Mierce or whoever would charge for a similar model, because I would never, ever buy one of those. The people who spend that kind of money will buy Kaladrax no matter what he costs. There are probably more customers with a similar frame of mind to mine, however. The question becomes, is $75 cheap enough to lure in this untapped market? Or is it still so high as to keep the dragon out of consideration? For me, $75 for a Bones dragon that looks like a supersized dino-museum skeleton keychain is just not a good deal.

Probably...though not so much because of the $75 big dragon, but the dozen or so smaller dragons (still the size of a lot of "big" miniatures from other companies) which come in at impulse buy price points. There is also a huge market for all things dragon. For those customers, $75 is a steal as they are also buying resin dragons of comparable size and detail for $300+. The $75 price point moves it down several brackets off from the big ones that might sell to a fewnhundred people ever to being affordable to anyone who wants one without too much difficulty.

Your point about the smaller dragons is right on. That's probably where I formed my opinion on price for quality for bones dragons--the much better quality Garrity dragons which are selling for, what? $25?
Those dragons are an amazing deal. Kaladrax doesn't feel like one. I guess when I see Papo/Schleich/Safari quality I expect to see a similar price (or less since Bones are not prepainted).
I think I saw the size at 14x11x14 tall, which is pretty significant. I am trying to think of comparable sized figures (miniature or toy) and most are a good bit smaller than that.
A lot will depend on the figure itself when they finally show up in peoples' hands, but I am generally pleased with Reapers quality for their price...so I remain cautiously optimistic.

Plus, there is a really good chance that it will look better than the $54 War Sphinx.... (But then there is a really good chance that an old sneaker, glued to a base, then painted, will look better than the $54 War Sphinx....)
Maybe it would be more fair to say that it looks better than the $58 Arachnarok Spider, which does at least look better than a shoe glued to a base....
Okay, okay... better than the $58 Zombie Dragon... if you insist on actual undead dragon thingies. And that does look better than either the giant spider thing or that whatever-the-heck-it's-supposed-to be.
Mostly, just not impressed with the GW big critters at this point....
I do really want to see Kaladrax painted up.

A bit of news on shipping from Reaper Bryan in the KS comments yesterday
"Bryan Stiltz about 19 hours ago
We're preparing the floor space now to begin shipments next week. As for why we're not doing on-site pickups, it's a time thing. Basically, if you drive all the way out to our shop, we feel like you deserve a tour. Normally we're quite happy to offer tours to individuals or groups that happen by. During fulfillment though, if 20 people come in to get their stuff, we either have to stop twenty times and give the tour (which takes about half an hour) or we have to be terribly bad hosts, get your product, and shoo you out the door. I'd much rather be the polite host and not ask you to leave us alone so we can get more accomplished, and to do that, we have to ask you to please not come up during fulfillment.
I truly am sorry - Interacting with you all is what makes this the greatest job ever"
Automatically Appended Next Post: so prepare for bonesy goodness (remember smallest orders go out first)
