I saw the chaplain... and was literally speechless. Your work is amazing. Nuts to people who say space marines don't get dirty!

One question though, how did you make the bone stand out so well on the chappy?! I have... lets just say problems, painting bone colors.

I’ve finally got round to a nice big photo upload

The finished terminator squad. I popped in to GW today to enter a painting competition being held tomorrow and picked up some dead grass static grass. I mixed it with a bit of the bright green static grass and added it to the bases. It really brings the models to life I think.

Some clearer pics of the tactical marines with the improved bases.

A not very clear picture of the army so far. (They wouldn't all fit in the book for a picture)

A sneak peak at my GD entry for this year. I’m planning doing some light effect on it and some sourced light so if any of you have any tips of know good tutorials please comment. The weapon has the blade from a grey knight terminator and the parchment wrapped round the haft is made of an off cut of etched brass.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The model was undercoated black and then lightly airbrushed grey from one direction so I can have some guidance for shading from a light source.

Something I read once about light said before you paint you may want to choose an angle of light and very lightly spray on some white paint so you can get an idea of how the paint should be to replicate light falling.

CrazyThang: I didn't answer your question about the bone armour. I do mention my recipe on page 5, just above the picture of the dreadnought. I hope it helps!

The termies look amazing, and I am very excited to see how the libraiian goes. Idea instead of just a shoulder pad in the sons colour have you thought about maybe his left hand being painted that red. It would make it all just pop.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

I’m not going to do the librarian in Sons of Orar colours... I’m not really sure on what chapter to do except he's going to have off white armour and the weapons are going to glow blue.

I really love this thread it's awesome... although I probably shouldn't read it while I'm painting... 'cause then I look down and realise I'm no where near the level of you're painting and I'm twenty, a massive kudos to you sir!

It is an oath we honour. Loving the full army pic and the list. You have quite a force there. Also I never saw static grass look so good, did you stick it on with superglue or pva?

It all looks incredible, but that termie's head on the far right I fear might be a little too small and simple. Just looks undersized to me.

These Space Marines are awesome! I really like how you paint them, they look real, instead of the pristine look the Marines in the Codex have.

Also, in most of your pictures about the progress of the army, the models aren't fully built; I've tried that before, and whenever I try it, after the models get glued, they don't look like they are all one piece, as your models do. How do you build them so they look as seemless as they do, and, any tips on how to achieve this look with other models?

I thought you might like to see this picture, it’s my main source of inspiration. And I have just noticed that there is a fatal flaw in the painting of my librarian... though as I’m still painting him there shouldn't be any problems with fixing him up ... if all goes well I might get a demon this year... well that's where I shall be aiming... I have to get further than I did in 2009

Anyway yeah, less of my own goals, this model is by Fernando Prieto Carbonell who is an absolutely awesome painter (as you can see) he has a fine 6 golden demons to his name and 2 slayer swords.

im a bit confused im gonna get flamed at for this but... You said acid rain is a big cause of the weathering and yet theres grass? Alive, Healthy Plain Grass? Shouldnt it be like all purple or somin?

But other than that nice models and are you 17 yes?
Cause i want to enter Golden Daemon but would rather not waste my time if your in it...

Yes, and the grass is in fact yellow with I tiny bit of green grass added... remember acid rain is not hydrochloric acid it’s about as acidic as beer (pH 4 to 5) so grass could grow quite easily... grass grows near the sea in sand dunes even though the sea is both very salty and an alkali...

Got the assault squad partially assembled and sorted out the shading on the librarians hand, making it nice and smooth I’ll be uploading some pics tomorrow

To answer some questions.

@ s.j.mccartney. The grass was really an experiment on these guys though I used my usual techniques. 1. Put a small amount of PVA glue where you want the grass. 2. Apply LOADS of static grass in almost like a pile on the base. 3. Push down on the grass pile firmly to get as much as possible to stick to the glue. 4. turn the model upside down and gently tap to remove all the excess grass, this also makes the strands stand up vertically making it a lot more realistic... another way to add grass is with tweezers, though I find this far to fiddly when doing multiple models.

@ Sweord. Well I assemble the models filly with very small amounts of glue to get the right look, and then take off the bits I want to paint separately. Or I use one part as a template. E.g. use a bolter to make sure the arms on the marine are in the right place. The other think which is quite obvious is doing apply glue where it could be seen. I use very small amounts of super glue to glue on the bolter and backpack.

I'm still trying to get back into the hobby and seeing your models and how well you have done them has inspired me. Can't wait to see that Termie done for the GD! How many other races have you tried modeling and painting? Or even different games? I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work! Just curious but, I"ve seen you mention paint ratios, but I've never been taught about water ratio. Is that a figure out on you own thing with plastic and metal or is there a helpful hint?

@ Biscuit#14: Over the years I have collected every race of lord of the rings warhammer apart from dwarfs (I moved to 40K just before they came out). In the 40k universe I have collected space marines (as you can see), tyranids, chaos space marines, orks, imperial guard and nercrons. As to paint to water ratios, if you’re a beginner painter then it really doesn't matter. If you want to do basic highlighting thin the paint down paint : water 3:1 or 3:2... If you're doing single miniatures then you want to thin it at least 1:1 to get smooth shading I often use 1:3 paint to water or even 1:4 to get a nice smooth gradient in shades.
