Hi,

I've been really bitten by the painting bug this past month or so, and this is the latest fella off my workbench. Inspired greatly by Moloch's Ouroboros carnifex, but executed with much less converting skill, I present to you my version of the yakface pattern Godfex (I hope I got it right, as a non-player, it's something I'm liable to do).

Painted with the usual medley of Vallejo paints, the main colour on both the carapace and the flesh-areas is actually from the Model Colour line, and I think I'm falling in love with the subtler hues and more realistic looking shades, need to buy more of them... heh...

On to the pictures:

Well you got all the points on the painting score but someone who paints that well always is at least skillful enough to tweak the legs a bit more so don't get the "Oh he just turned the leg to make it look running" impression.

Hi,

Thanks for the comment, but to clarify, the leg has already been modified at the hip so that it *looks* like it's running. You can't get this particular pose straight out of the box, and there weren't any convienient "ribbing-joints" on the lower leg for me to chop and reposition. In my eye, it doesn't look unnatural, merely rather than suggesting a "leaping dash" type of movement, it instead gives the impression of a slower, more lumbering gait appropriate for a monster the size of a 'fex.

The leg can definitely do with some further tweaking around the foot area, but I had no confidence in rebuilding the ankle architecture to a reasonable level, and judged that I'd probably do more harm than good trying to squeeze out that extra degree or two of movement from the joint.

Cheers

yeah, that leg would take some serious chop up and repair to make it look 'right' (whatever the hell right for a carnifex running looks like >.&gt.

Good work overall. Solid yet subtle paint job with just enough 'other' color to help keep it interesting. I'd say 7.5-8.0 all told. Another highlight would have brought out some more of the detail, but I know you've said something before about keeping highlights subtle? Or am I mistaken >.>?

@grey_death

Yeah, trying the "subtle" approach again towards my highlighting. There's a practical aspect to that on this model though, because both the carapace and skin area use the same base colour, just that one was mixed with black to produce the darker carapace shade, and the other with bleached bone to produce the lighter skin shade. If I kept highlighting the carapace, I would risk it blending in with the skin. I took a long hard look at it after the final round of highlights, and I can already feel it starting to blend together (and not in a good way).

Cheers!

You might try adding different colors entirely instead of just going the black/white (in this case bleached bone) to help out in breaking up the colors in the future. Maybe a more yellow color to help highlight the skin next time.

I do see your point though as to why you didn't go further. You did a great job pushing the color in two directions. Time to take it to the next level ^_-.

Yup, that idea occured to me... AFTER I'd finished drybrushing the "skin" areas. *doh!*. After that, I really liked the dark greeny shade on the carapace, and didn't quite feel like changing the colour there. Will definitely keep it in mind for next time though. Thanks!

Agreed with Luna, "Holy Necro's batman this thread is OLD"

This thread had to be way way back there. Helpful tip for the new guy. Look at the dates before replying to a post.
