Dakka Painting Challenge - Ver 2.0

The release of the New Dakka has prompted the return of the Dakka Painting Challenge! For those of you who weren't around when it was originally started, this is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!

The Rules

1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge presented.

2.) Take a WIP shot of your model before painting.

3.) Paint your model!

4.) Take another shot of the completed model and send it in to DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before Midnight Central (GMT-6:00) the night of the Deadline!!

5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.

6.) Voting will last for 1 week. At the end of the voting, the one with the most votes in the poll, Wins!!

Notes:

The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release by me in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified.

Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.

Images:

Pics of your model may be either 800x600 pixels or 600x800 pixels. The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them.

The Prize:

The Winner Recieves: Dakka Bragging rights, A Dakka front page announcement of your glorious victory, and the respect from your fellow modelers. And thanks to the kindness of Yakface, A 1 Year DCM membership!

Themes:

Every time the Dakka Painting challenge is held, the Theme of the Challenge will change. So never expect to see the same competition twice. I'll always be open to theme ideas and if you come up with any please don't hesitate to email DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com at once with your awesome idea!

The Challenge

Challenge Deadline: December 2nd, 2007

Challenge: God Bless the Infantry.

This time around we're going to start off with an Infantry model challenge. Your armies would be nothing without them and we're going to pay homage to the fine models that make up the core of our hobby!

The Rules:

Model must be a Single infantry model.

Based on a single square or round base. 25mm up to 40mm accepted.

If you have ANY questions regarding the competition, please feel free to ask here or email DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com!!

This is awesome Aaron. Thanks very much for organizing this. Hope I have time for it and lots of others as well. I can't wait to see everything.

Good stuff Aaron,

Subject of anonymity may be difficult to achieve, given some infantry models may look rather reckognizable and unique

Yay! My questions-

1) The WIP requirement will be the same as the old comp I assume? (ie just a pic of your mini in an unfinished state, not neccessarily bare metal or primed)

2) I'm not sure how to define infantry - is it some sort of gaming term, or, as I would think of it, soldiers fighting on foot? (basically, I want to enter an Ogryn, but I assume that they're some sort of uber-elite super special unit choice in the IG codex, and maybe not strictly defined as "infantry" as far as gamers are concerned, I am not a gamer).

Hehe, I realize that keeping things completely anonymous will be somewhat hard to do because of just that. But I want to keep with the spirit of the rules and in the future (when themes are much different from this), it should be easier to make voting anonymous.

While WIP would be nicest if you showed the model in a much more unfinished state (metal/primed), it is acceptable if the model is in a not nearly completed state.

As for Infantry - Medics, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Grunts, Vets, Ground Pounders, Foot sloggers, Filthy Legs, Airborne, Air Assault, Snipers, Advanced Marksmen...you get the idea ^_-. If your model can fit an infantry role I'll accept em ^_-.

ok great. As it happens I've just finished applying the base coats on my intended entry. Maybe the wip pic could be dropped from the comp in future though? (just a suggestion. IIRC the wip rule was there to verify that people had painted their mini for the comp within the timeframe of the comp, but personally I think that any mini in someones collection that fits the theme could be eligible for participation, as long as it is an original [unseen, unpublished], whether they painted it 6yrs ago or this month. I think it would encourage more nice entries nd make for a better comp. After all, we are competing for fun and a sense of community etc etc, I don't think it matters if one person spent 3 months painting their entry and another painted it especially for the DPC. Just my 2 cents).

Might I suggest a challange for the next competition:

Personally, I'd disagree, requiring a WIP pic of the model in an unpainted/nearly unpainted state at the start of the contest would seem to put people on a more nearly even playing field.

I'm going to have to stick to my guns on the WIP rule. As TragicNut mentioned, it's really all about the even keel here. They're Challenges, and while this is a competition, the point is to challenge the painter/modeler to create the best piece possible in the time given toward the theme presented.

And to kendoka: That's actually been an idea, not the OTT marine character of course, but to present a picture for the theme and have people use it as a guide to follow in producing their model! Expect to see something along those lines in the future of the competition!

Oh and for good measure

God I missed those.

A one year DCM membership (Dakka Contribuing Member, gotta add that to the glossary) is a very small prize at this point.

Basically, people who donate money to Dakka to keep it running are given DCM status and having membership has a few perks on the site. With the site currently where it is, the perks are pretty slim:

Ad free site (if you wish), custom rank title (if you wish), access to the private DCM forums and a dakkadakka.com email address (if you want it).

Unfortunately, at this moment it is really the only "prize" I have to offer, so that's why I'm offering it. In the future for any other Dakka painting challenges I will hopefully be able to offer some other things but for right now, that's all I got.

A - DCM Membership is an excellent prize! (still ~$25 value, right?)

2 - Dakka painting contest is supa-cool! I was just looking at the warhammer.org painting contest, and thought what a great idea it was. Definitely has to be started & completed within the challenge timeframe, it is a challenge afterall, not an ebay purchase showcase.

D - At the aforementioned site, the winner of the challenge picks the next theme, what do you think about that?

There's also bragging rights. There are some darn fine modellers/painters here on Dakka. I'm not even a contender.

The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release by me in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified.

Why the restriction? The Challenge might get a better turn out without demanding publication rights to people's work.

This was mainly in an effort to keep it from becoming a popularity contest. And to reenforce the idea of painting a model specifically with this competition in mind. It's not to take the rights from the indvidual but really just asking them to hold off on posting their work for the sake of the competition.

As the competition grows and evolves, the themes will become more and more elaborate and fun, and really give folks the chance to put their all into learning a new technique and some new ways to paint. So hopefully folks enter in an effort to try and learn something ^_^

I think the point is that the restriction is temporary, not eternal. It makes sense to me, as does the WIP requirement.

Well Migs, if you want to help a brother out, I would gladly appreciate it.

BTW Grey_Death, would a Zoanthrope count as infantry (given that its kind of large and it floats, not walks)?

Cause I could use SOMETHING to get me painting again and contributing a model to this competition could be just the trick, although the only model I have on my plate that I'm interested in the area of infantry would be a Zoey.

Whaddya think?

Eh, a Zoap would be kinda pushing it. We're really going for anything that fights in groups or squads. Zoap has a sense of independence to em and like you mentioned, he's got a floating issue :S . Now if you wanted to throw in a Warrior, termagant, stealer, hormagant, any of those would be fine . And you could always paint that model you've always wanted to paint but never had the chance to! That's what I'm doin!

Just looked at the schedule and I am flying home 1st of december to be reunited with my paints - guess I'll just manage to squeeze an infantry thing painted

As for the trophy. I'll look at it beginning of December. It should not be too complicated - something lightweight too - as it these may well be mailed around the globe.
