I thought I'd share the background of my 40k Space Marine Army, The Emperor's Other Children...
4 score and 10,000 years ago a superhuman was created when a
variation in the development of the Primarch Fulgrim resulted in two
genetically equal specimens. This other creation was named Steve and
though he and Fulgrim were twins, Steve was far less capable than his
super-human brother. Steve embarrassed the Emperor and the other
Primarchs, and Fulgrim kept him tucked away in the chapter depths of
The Emperor's Children. None acknowledged him as a Primarch, and
though the Emperor sometimes asked Fulgrim about Steve's health,
little attention was ever given to his existence.
It is said that the reason Fulgrim became obsessed with genetically
modifying his chapter was because of the shame he felt for being the
genetic equal of Steve. It was this shame that lead him to send Steve
and the IV Company of the Emperor's Children on a fool's errand when
Horus summoned Fulgrim to Istavan III. Because of this, IV Company
did not turn with the rest of the Emperor's Children.
After the Horus Heresy, the Lords of Terra were very reluctant to
place Steve in charge of anything. So after giving Steve control of
the IVth Company and renaming it the Emperor's Other Children, they
placed him and his chapter on guard duty in an ancient Terra Desert.
In the 40th Millennium, Steve slipped in the shower and became the
last of the loyalist Primarchs to die.
Because an undesirable no longer runs the Emperor's Other Children,
the Lords of Terra have entrusted this little utilized chapter to do
battle for the emperor. Because the chapter has not seen action in
10,000 years, it has a vast supply of assault weapons in its
arsenal. This is reflected by the Cleanse and Purify Trait. Years
of being picked on by other chapters has also bred a stubburness in
the EoC. This is reflected by the Deaeth Before Dishonor drawback.
The EoC's holiest relic is a birthday card the Emperor gave Steve for
his 10'th birthday. Though the $5 bill it once contained has long
since been spent on candy, the imprint of it still remains... It
reads, "Hiya Kiddo. How's it going? So, you've turned...another year
older. Good job. You know, when I was 10ish, I had unified 1,000
worlds. But don't sweat it, I'm sure you'll find something you're
good at. Here's 5 bucks. Take Care, The Emperor of Mankind."
