Right, so here´s the thing. I recently went and ordered half a squadron (six planes) from Forgeworld, just to see the quality, see if this might be a fast game to get into, something for a more laidback night of gaming. My stuff has yet to arrive, but will hopefully start getting here within the next day or five...
Anyways, the thing is, that as a bit of a terrain nutcase, i figured i might build them some sort of airfield, or possibly a Baseship of a sort.
Airfield
The possibilities for an airfield are almost endless, with hangars, bunkers, AA turrets, sensor towers, just read "Double Eagle" and you´ll see.
Plus: It could be modular, meaning i could build lots and lots of terrain bits, but in epic scale, making it take up less space.
Downside: Not as impressive as a "Baseship".
The "Baseship" Idea
Okay, think Battlestar galactica, or maybe Protoss Carriers (Starcraft), big ship with lots of fighters, i would have to do a smaller version of this, but that´s the general idea. Was thinking of having something like a freighter with some space given over to the navy, for hangar space.
Good things: Might look very cool, centrepiece style, and also, it could be used as an objective in games.
Bad: Loads more modelling and scratchbuilding. Needs to given more thought.
I´ll try and do some basic drawings of my idea, and get them online sometime this week, but all input is good as far as i´m concerned.
Does anyone here even play Aeronautica?

Your ideas sound interesting, I look forward to see what you come up with.
Of course I'll be comparing your Airfield terrain to the FW released models....Just to see how much better they are
The Baseship sounds like a bit of a challenge, are you going to be creating "fluff" for it? And which race will it/they be for?
Oh yeah, and I've played AI, it's a very good game IMO. The rules for it seem to have the potential for portability into other game systems. (FanPro's AeroTech for example)

Alrighty then, the first box of imperials arrived today, and they are surprisingly well detailed! I´ll be doing imperial Thunderbolts, with a pair of Lightnings for speedy support. For now....
Heheh, I´ve been eyeing that FW airfield stuff, but I think it looks a bit too.... "Techy".
I have this weird idea that 40K stuff is less tech, more clunky plascrete structures, with bundles of antennas and imperial shrine looks. Honestly, to me those buildings seem like they are taken from some modern day airfield and copy pasted.
I´ll be posting pictures later tonight, but for now, I´ll just tell those who aren´t in the know: These flyers are about 55mm wide, 50mm long, they are in 6 pieces, (Nose, body, wings, and engines) and they are super super detailed. After seeing them, I know that i HAVE to do something cool with them.

Sorry for the lack of postage here guys, but RL has hit me with the blunt force of a hammer (yes, an imperial warhammer even) and i´ve been absolutely swamped by work :(
However, that has made it possible to do some thinking about colour schemes and such. The flyers will be dark grey (Adeptus Battlegrey/Codex Grey) with red engine cowls and stripes on the wings to denote individual planes.
And the baseship idea is going to happen. A few days ago i had the fortune to come across something that i´ve been lacking since moving to Copenhagen; a Hobby shop! It´s called "Model & Hobby" and though it is so originally named it has tonnes of brilliant stuff. Yay!
So i´ve got basic schemtaics on my desk now, and will start construction within a day or two. This will be a bit of a project for me, working with Evergreen products and such should be fun.
As for the idea, i´m thinking about an aircraft carrier, 40K style. It will accomodate 8 flyers, and will have an enclosed carrier deck to accomodate these. Also, i´ll put on some AA guns, and possibly some long range missiles, to keep things interesting.
I intend for it to be open´able so people can see all the stuff inside, including raised walkways, piping, ammo lockers, and such stuff. Well we´ll see, but that´s the idea anyways.

Some Pictures today! I did a test paint scheme on one of the ´Bolts. It´s dark grey, not so much shading and weathering yet, having doubts about weathering these, since they supposedly have ground crew to fixs em and patch em if there´s something wrong...
Anyways, on to the pics:

Also tonight: The first pics of the Baseship! I´ve been working on the basic design of the thing, but my camera doesn´t want to take pictures of these papers. They come out all blurry and weird
But i´ve started work on the hangar deck, and i´ve made a prototype for the walkways that will be used throughout the hangar.
Piccies:
Edit: Forgot to mention: The hangar deck will meassure about 18cm wide by 34cm long, the entire ship will be about 45cm long. And the gangway prototype is 2cm long...

aha, see finger drumming gets results.
Like what you've done so far with the base ship frame, and those walkways look very cool
Those nose colour on the fighter looks unfinished, however that may just be the pictures.
I have this idea in my head that maybe it should go back as far as the join just before "exhaust" pipes?
I'm probably being daft and it'll look worse if you did that, so ignore me

Well, more FW stuff arrived today. And sadly some of it was poorly cast. My last T-bolts are fine, but the Lightnings are horribly miscast and I´ll have to order replacements for most parts.
The stuff today was: The core rulebook (which is amazing quality), an additional pair of T-bolts and a pair of lightning fighters (miscasts, horrible).
In painting news, two of the Thunderbolts are now finished. I´ve changed my mind on the red front end of the planes, and gone for a red fin instead. Each plane will then have numbers and wing art to tell them apart.
The other four T-bolts are in various stages of painting but will hopefully be done soon.
Oh, and of course the baseship, which is taking a bit of form now. The first bits of deck plating have gone on, and one end of the hangar bay is fitted (but not glued yet).
Sadly I am going abroad for the christmas holiday, and will have to suspend work until I get back.

Neat stuff! If you decide to go back and do the airstrip, take a look at Old Crow models: they do a lot of 6mm sci-fi terrain (including a train!).
