Asking because I think that would be 10x easier than going over tiny details and in lines with a paintbrush. A small fine point pen with something like a chaos black paint would save my sanity.

Well it does say decorative painting, but not sure how well it would react with my GW paints. Anyone have a pen like that they have used to success?

Those pens work well, but you have to seal the model first. They will clog up otherwise. Also you cannot paint on top of the pens because they run when they come into contact with water. So you have to paint, seal, blackline, seal. You can find them at michaels, joanns and other art supply stores if you live within the US.

I used drafting pens to do the armor lining and vinework on this model.
They work pretty well, but as other have said, they will run if you get the ink wet before it's been sealed.

Thanks for the reply, looks like it is effective. Any brand you recomend more than another?

pilot pens ,with pigmented ink work great ,they are fibre tiped and go down to .01 of a millimeter ,avoid getting anything with a metal nib like a rotring rapido or similar .
But to be honest learning to use a brush is far better in the long run imho

I'll dig around and see if I can find any.

I can't agree here, I've never managed to get a decent result with a fibre tip pen, and I've tried several. The ones I use are rapidoliners with a metal nib, and once you get used to how it works, it works very well.

I really disagree with this. I've been working with traditional brushes for around 20 years, and there is no reason to ignore a tool that does a job better just because it's not the standard way to do it. Pens and airbrushes are both good examples of this, they do some things a brush can't do, or can't do well.

That's a very misleading statement, because there are things an airbrush can do that a regular brush cannot, and vice-versa. The best tool should be used for the job to achieve the best effect. It is far better, imo, to learn how to use as many tools as you are likely to use.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair. |

Apparently, there are pens that are great for use in miniature painting from a company called Sakura. They are called Micron Pigma Pens. I found some info on them from a painter's site and below is a picture of one of the things she's done with em. You can get them at MisterArt.com.

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?" |
