1,000pt armies, Mission: Cleanse, Gamma level without Dusk & Dawn.
I won the roll to choose table quarters (which I promptly used to choose the quarter near the warm heater ), which meant my opponent would have to deploy the first unit. terrain on the table was as follows: two pyramids, the tall rocks and the green tomb all block line of sight; the two grey (shuttle and altar) terrain pieces and the rhino wreck all provide a 5+ cover save; two large yellow tombs are 4+ area terrain.
My army list:
1x Necron lord with Rez Orb and Veil of Darkness
2x 12 Warriors
2x 6 Destroyers
1x 5 Scarab Swarms
My opponent's list:
1x Bigmek with shokk attack gun
1x Weirdboy Warphead
2x (roughly) 20 Ork Shoota Boyz* Mob, each with PK Nob and 2 Big Shootas
2x Trukk Shoota Boyz* Mob with PK Nob
1x 2 Killa Kanz with a Big Shoota
1x 3 Lobbas
*My opponent had all his Orks built as Slugga boyz for the last codex but for this game we agree to treat them all as Shoota boyz just to test out the new codex.
Turn 1 Necrons
I won the roll to go first and I chose to go first. My Scarabs Turbo Boosted forward, hoping to Assault his Lobbas, The Destroyers on the right flank moved along table edge to draw line of sight to his Killa Kanz marching amongst the mobs. The Destroyers managed to kill one Kan but unfortunately, it didn't explode and take any Orks with it. I only managed to get one Destroyer from the other unit within line of sight to the Trukk near the Rhino wreck, but luckily he managed to blow it up. The Boyz hopped out without getting hurt at all, thanks to the new Trukk rules. My two Warrior units spread around to avoid taking too much damage from the Big Mek's Shokk Attack Gun.
Turn 1 Orks
All the Orks surged forward, execpt the Big Mek and Lobbas. Bigmek and Lobbas did a good job by killing a few Warriors (I forget exactly how many, maybe two). The Warphead used his psychic power and teleported forward into the greyish shuttle terrain and promptly unloaded everything they had into the Destroyers beside them, but only managed to knock one down.
The remaining Trukk dumped off its passengers and the angry mob easily squashed the tiny metallic bugs who dared to get in their way. Waaagh!
Turn 2 Necrons
Thanks to some appalling dice rolls, I caused almost no damage this turn. The front Warrior unit moved a little back, which turned out to be a waste since it left them unable to shoot the mob teleported by the Warphead, but not far enough away to avoid being charged by that same mob in the next turn thanks to the new 'waaagh' fleet rule.
Turn 2 Orks
The Big Mek shot down 5 Warriors and took one wound off Lord with his SAG and the Lobbas even managed to kill one Warrior. The Shoota Boyz killed a couple of Destroyers. The remaining Trukk drove forward and picked up its Boyz (I then I remembered that a Trukk is a fast vehicle, and I think I missplayed: the swarm didn't really slow the Trukk boyz down at all, they kind of died for nothing ). The Warphead rolled badly for his psychic power but with the extra movement provided by the Waaagh called that turn they still slammed into close combat with the front Warrior unit (just barely). The Orks only managed to kill two Warriors and because the Lord wasn't joined to the Warrior unit, when they made their pile in moves despite the savage hand-to-hand fighting all the boyz carefully kept their feet 1" away from Necron Lord. What a gentleman hehehe.
Turn 3 Necrons
Two Destroyers and three Warriors stood back up, the Lord teleported the Warrior unit out of combat and who immediately turned back around to shoot the orks they left behind. Their firing, when combined with the other Warrior unit and some Destroyers, downed all but Warphead and the Nob (who also suffered a wound). The other Destroyer unit shot off a wheel of the Trukk, causing it to fly back 6" and crash into ground, killing some boyz as they fell off (what a lovely trukk ).
Turn 3 Orks
the remaining Shoota Boy mob advanced forward. The Trukkboyz clambered up into the wrecked Trukk and made a small firebase there. The Big Mek blew one Destroyer awat (which stood right back up on my turn). Without his Boyz around to boost his Ld, the Warphead failed to cast a psychic power, instead he and the Nob charged into the closest Warrior unit but only managed to kill one Warrior. The Warriors failed to cause any casualties in return but managed to stand firm and not run away.
Turn 4 Necrons
At this point in the game I made a crucial mistake. I pulled all the Destroyers back and they did nothing else this turn. In hindsight, I should have moved them into a position to shoot the remaining Shoota Boyz mob. The Lord charged into the fray against the Nob and killed him before his deadly klaw could swing. The Warphead tried to fall back but was caught and run down by the Warriors, grrrrrr!
Turn 4 Orks
There wasn't a whole lot going on this turn. The Orks continued to press forward and the Lobbas managed to kill a Warrior and pin the unit near the Lord (which would prove costly as I couldn't teleport them away in the following turn).
Turn 5 Necrons
The Lord teleported back to the larger group of Warriors, the Destroyers kept moving back towards the ruins.
Turn 5 Orks
the Big Mek fired a dazzling shot which managed to kill 3 Destroyers (although two stood back up next turn), The Shoota Boyz brought down a couple of Warriors but I don't remember exactly how many.
Turn 6 Necrons
Knowing this was my last turn I turbo boosted one Destroyer unit to capture the left table quarter and awaited my defeat.
Turn 6 Orks
The advancing Shoota Boyz finally got in range of the Destroyer unit and promptly downed them all. The smaller Warrior unit in the altar (grey) terrain was taken under half strengh.
A Crushing Victory for Waaaagh!
Some post-game thoughts: My opponent is a good player and by playing against him I have learned a lot, especially in regard to casualty removal and the order in which I shoot with my units. The new Ork codex is powerful but not unbeatable. I think my 1k Necron list has a big weakness in that it lacks the firepower to deal with a horde army. I don't think I really had a chance to win this battle, the fact that I even managed to last for a full six turns is pretty surprising. I think that a Monolith and some Immortals will be the next units added to my army.
Comments are very much appreciated! If you have any suggestions on how to deafeat Orks with Necrons, please feel free to post, as any advice would be quite helpful to Necron players like myself.

Thanks for the lovely report! Nice pics, well painted armies and terrain (with a lot of possibilities in the backshelf )
To the report:
The Destroyers are caught at the edge of the table which is unfortunate. They have a 36" range, don't they? And they can move 12" a turn and still fire? Then get them out of the 18"+6" move danger zone of the shootaboys! They could have played all day long with the boys, imo.
I think you've done a good thing with all your teleporting, but the scarab suicide was, as already stated, unnecessary.
Other than that, i don't have many ideas, maybe due to because I'm not sure what happened when exactly...
Hope that helps a bit!

P.S. Ahhh, I managed to see the full picture. Part of the field was missing due to small screen/dakka. Maybe an agressive turboboost behind his lines would have confused him and/or forced him to split his forces. No one likes blasting destroyers in his backyard!

thx Schepp , the problem of the Destroyer being caught is in fact that his boyz are spread all around the table , I couldnt pass through them without being caught by his mob unit or shokk attack gun ,and when they being caught far away from other Destroyers and the Lord ,they are much easier to be wiped out . I also have thought about teleport Lord with warriors to his back but that will be too much risk for they could be caught by shokk attack gun . The new shokk attack gun is the very unit I worried through the whole battle .

As you said, hard to run Crons at 1000, as 460 of that is nigh-compulsory, and suboptimal. Good job making the best of a rough point limit game.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Pretty interesting, although that didn't look like anywhere near 25% terrain. A question though: What did you learn about shooting and removing casualties?

Well, your army looks acordingly which is also a very good thing!
Do you know you can turboboost your Destroyers? Maybe you could have tried to send a destroyer team turboboosting behind terrain(because they cannot fire this turn) and then the next turn they move out of cover and go after the Mek.
Just some thoughts.

I did turboboost my destroyer (by the last turn ,which is a little bit too late) and go after Bigmek is impossible ,because he used a mob of turkk boyz(who lost their turkk at turn 1) to cover his Bigmek for the whole game , there was no way for me to target him without blast weapon.

Nice battle report. I think in your place I would have set up the warriors farther back so that it would take longer for the orks to reach them. This might have given you an extra turn or two to shoot them with your destroyers.

Very nice battle report, no wonder it made the Dakka News.
Since this was a table quarters scenario, I would have considered teleporting the lord and warriors away from your main fighting force. I realize that this would split your forces, but it would also take away from the Ork momentum. Charging forward, then having to turn around to get at the enemy would be very costly for a CC oriented force.
Well, just a thought. Sounds like it was a great game.

Maybe I missed something, but wasn't the Big Mech by himself, and thus you could single him out? I've had the advantage of playing against orks before the new codex came out as the 40k faery left a printed out version of the codex on my friends door step about 3 weeks ago, and every game ive played him I always go after the shock attack guns with everything I have until theyre dead. Assuming they were by themselves a single wound from a lascannon is instant death with no armour save.
In general the only advice I could really give would be to deploy farther back, and to pick out what things in the enemy list are the largest threat and continue shooting it until it is dead, even if you may think you have juicier targets.
For instance me personally my priority for this list would have been:
1. Big Mech
2. Truck Shoota Vehicles (target the shootas after both trucks are dead)
3. 2x 20 shoota boyz
4. 1x Weirdboy
5. Kill Kanz
The reason being for these choices is the core idea that in that exact order they pose the largest threat to your army. The big mech can be an ungodly high strength and totes an ap, with this in mind a 2 wound toughness 4 model is too easy a target to ignore.
The trucks come second as now that you have minimized his threatening firepower to almost essentially nothing you want to slow his advance as much as possible, and by blowing up both trucks you take away 13" of movement which they need to get in range and rob you a free round of shooting and forcing you to teleport.
From Here you mow down the shootas until every single one is dead in the unit and than you move to the next.
Although it may seem a waste, have target priority and dont give up until its dead, an instance of this is shooting a single lascannon at an orc squad when they still have their killa cans. Although the kans are a juicier target they are less of a threat and can easily be dealt with as they pose less of a risk to yourself. Those are my words of wisdom just seriously try it out next game, and dont budge on it no matter how much you feel your wasting a shot, have priorities and stick to it. And did I mention deploy farther back?

IC status works wonders sometimes. I thought the same first, though. It's a tricky one then. Maybe doubling him with two destroyer squad from both sides. But those trukk boy can just form a circle around him. Nasty nasty shokk attack gun...

Cool battle report and I loved the pics. Is that your home or a game store? Because if it's your pad you have some really cool terrain.
As for what to get next I would strongly suggest Immortals. Probably one of the best units in the game. The Monolith while cool doesn't count as a Necron and that's a good chunk of points that you'll need to be careful with.

Then take a monolith the blast template can target specific models based on how your codex reads

I'm on this, my friend continually taunts me with it (and then never really uses it that well).
Anyway, a problem with your post, skimmers (including monolith) never block line of sight until immobilized, so the huge biulding does not block line of sight .
Anyway, the particle whip that the monolith has is S9 AP3, but under the center hole it is AP1. This means that the model under the hole has to take a S9 AP1 hit, even if it is in a squad (i.e. if you don't scatter, put a wound on his special weapon/nob, who will then be insta-killed ...). This can also single out a warboss, and is confirmed in the online FAQ. If he is a regular opponent, he will probably cry because orks have very little to take down a monolith, all they really have is PKs (including on a warboss on a bike, watch out for that) , which need 6s to hit and .... well, SAG kind of, and most other things are not very probable, either S8, so only glancings on it with luck, and Zapp gun, which I guess is in same grouping as SAG.

my bad on the block sight mono . thx for the useing of particle whip ,but I still have one question : the rule book says you couldnt target an IC in the unit ,and if the center of particke whip didnt scatter right on the IC ,is there other way to put the center hole on an IC ?

Your not targeting the independent character, but rather the unit he is in, it just so happens he is the model under the center of the blast, which is the loop hole used to make use of this incredible cheesiness.

Funny with the shock attack gun, i usually get comical results, like terrible scatter, blowing my own mek up, or teleporting the mek to what he was shooting. Although I did this once and teleported him into a group of devastators with 4 heavy bolters. He actually tied up their shooting a round which turned out to be crucial, so it wasent all bad.

In all my battles using imperial guard against Necrons, the one thing that repeatedly saved my butt was engaging the Necrons in close combat. The Hardened fighters doctrine combined with Necrons being slow in close combat really gave me an edge in fighting them. I would literally drown him in guardsmen while my fire support units took on those nasty monoliths and destroyers. So, what can a necron player do against these annoying horde-army close combat strikes? Well, there are two things I can think of. One is to use the Monolith's Particle whip ability (which of course requires a Monolith in your army ). The other is to fight fire with fire. You can put a screen of necron close combat units in front of your fire support units. Flayed ones and Pariahs are annoying! Once the screen has been engaged in combat, your fire support units will have a blocked line of site. But when this happens you can use the Monolith's teleport ability to move them to a better location. I'm not an expert in Necron strategy, and I don't profess to be, but I have played against them many times and remember that these were some of the things that worried me most. That and heavy Destroyers...but those aren't quite as dangerous to Orks since they don't have as many dangerous tanks as the Imperial Guard.

You guys have a very nice collection of terrain. And your models are painted very nicely. The fleshy color of your necrons works very well imo. Also the trukk is a really nifty convershun.
I hope you post many more battle reports in the future.

That, plus the pyramids and other egyptian-style terrain on the board, and half the pieces on the shelves in back, are made from Hirst Arts molds. I own a bunch and they are fantastic for making terrain if you have the time to cast the bricks yourself.
