Ok the name is cheesy w/e its not 100% set in stone. I had this idea years ago to do chaos themed Orks which would basically bring together my 2 great wargaming loves. I was always hesitant though because the old dex was so lacking and with new kits seemingly just over the horizon i was reluctant and didnt want to spend months making what could possibly be a huge waste.

So basically the idea in a nutshell is a company of World Eaters CSM would have come to a planet to seek an ancient Khornate monolith/artifact and would find the world had become a generic ork world. Skipping a lot of backstory that i have yet to flesh out and probably best suited to a different thread the orks over a long long period of war basically would beat the SM's but givin orky state of mind would come to respect the World Eaters way of war and general mettle. But givin the fighting would be inevitably drawing nearer to a powerful khornate artifact the chaotic influence would be growing stronger as more and more blood is shed. So skipping even more my idea is that khorne himself watches this warboss cut down one of his champions and grants him favor. Now we have a large group of veteran orks hardened by decades of conflict with the World Eaters who more or less try to emulate the CSM way of war.

Which brings me to my first venture into modeling these monsters. Consequently, it was also my paint scheme test.

My version of the ork boy:

Im still bad at the lighting thing so the pic is blah but you get the idea. Nothing to special about the conversion but im trying not to go too nuts on the boys as ill need lots and am not going to live for another 100 years. I went with a darker red (terracotta+highlights) to suit the darker green on the ork flesh. I want a more realistic look for them color wise because i wanted to get away with the comical ork stigma, ideally the will make an opponent piss his/pants when they see them fielded.

Next was the big boss himself. The main idea behind him was in the 3rd ed. codex they have that cool size comparison shot where they show the whole ork family tree in regards to size=power and i always liked that. However the models never did justice to how variable the orks are when looking at concepts and the backstory art (Yarrick v. Thraka Armageddon dex anyone?) That compounded by the fact that this particular ork had Khorn in his corner demanded my boss be truly terrifying sight:

And the size shot:

In the middle i have my first nob that will more than likely go into the bosses retinue. I went with a bloodletter theme on this guy which is what the pelt on his back will be. You cant see it in that shot but the claws of the flayed demon ar kind of trailing off him which i like because it makes him look fast heh. I literally just got the hide "doneish" so i have yet to sand it or do final shaping but i wanted to get him in the size shot. He's shaping up though nicely, but i need to add a lot to that axe still.

Hopefully next update my photography skills will be up to par with what ive seen on these forums already, but i expect ill have more boyz done and a finished shot of that Nob. Ill most likely finish a mob of boyz and that Nob before i dig into the painting. I welcome any questions, comments, or criticisms.

Thanks guys!

I was under the impression that the Orks were not susceptible to the taint of Chaos. I could be wrong of course, but, whether the idea makes sense or not, it could still yield some awesome looking conversions. I once saw pictures of an Imperial Orks army that looked awesome. It didn't make much sense, but hey, as long as the final product looks cool, who cares? So, right or wrong, I still give mad props to ya. dakka dakka

Yea pretty much i would say. The idea was really just to capture the themes that chaos represents and really just marry what are in my mind the two most intense armies in terms of raw emotion and passion for what they do. When you have subject matter like that the possibilities are endless! But if i start running out of ideas i may have to throw in a tenticle or two , but for now im just sticking with brutal and dynamic rather than twisted.

Around the time of Codex Witch/deamonhunters I think Adrian Wood made an army of chaos (think it was nurgle) orks using the adversaries stuff.

I have also seen warhammer fantasy orcs done in a khornate scheme with dark red skin in a white dwarf a while back

this is realy great stuff you got there. the ('ard?) boy is real fun, and the boss with the HUGE choppa looks totally bad a§§. the boss is nice, but doesn't say woahtotallyawesome to me like the normal Nob. altough you modeling-foo is way superior then mine.

more! more!

there is real awesome drawing of nurgled Orks in the Demon Hunter Codex, and I thought, hey, that is really neat stuff. I have to try this. (I play Orks and Death Guard btw.)

then I saw Adrian Wood's demonic Orks....and almost pucked. they were just space orks in golbin green and ELF flesh, with the old mutations sprue glued all over them. it was horrbile. I can't imagine how something like thta got into the pages of the WD. you know, back in the day when it was still good

if you aks me this way, let me thing aboit it for a moment....

altough I'm not really fan of a Warboss carying such a large Banna, somehow this isn't impressive enough.

his axe should be bigger. if you compare it with the nob axe, it seems like his is just one or two sizes bigger.

and I think a head conversion is in order. maybe more horns on his helmet and/or a helmet which looks more like a skull. maybe the defiler head?

Thanks for the input. About the axe, the reason its not bigger is my intention is for that to have been the property of the late Chaos Lord. Its made from the shaggoth axe but carved into a khornate glyph, i cant tell if that shows in the pics as i already know what it is. Plus i tried to make it look like that nob axe weighs a ton with him hauling it w/ both hands. I dont see any other axe really being close to those two in my army size wise so i'm not certain itll be an issue.

As for the head your probably right in that i need to spice it up a bit. Again i cant tell if it shows properly in the pics but his jaw is actually the attack squig jaw with extended teeth to give the proper waaaagh look. I'll try dry fitting some horns on there for fun but im reluctant to use that skull mask idea as i never cover the faces of my army leaders. There is just too much facial expression that gets hidden IMO.

Wow, I love what you did with the Nob. That guy strikes fear and doesn't look like a goof at all. What bit did you use for the axehead?

As for the warboss, his banner/axe doesn't look choppy enough. If the shaft was thicker, it'd look better, imo, but I don't have the imagination to do the things you do. :-D
And the warbosses right leg is throwing me off, it looks like it could be hanging, I am not sure.

Yeah i didn't think they were that good either, in my opinion they looked 'rushed' as if WD had gone up to adrian and said 'we need a load of nurgle orks for the next issue, can you get it done by lunchtime!' but i'm sure with more time and effort they could have looked better. Just thought i'd mention it for inspiration for chaotic orks.

These khornate orks are looking top-notch though, 2 suggestions though, 1. Berserker Stormboys, 2. Looted defiler/brass scorpion/bloodthirster (wtf?)

Pretty much the whole weapon is just the new biker nob axe but extended and with the arms/hands repositioned. Im trying to think of some trophies/gubbins to hang off the thing cause helmets are too big

Ungentle wrote:And the warbosses right leg is throwing me off, it looks like it could be hanging, I am not sure.

I agree with ya the main thing im unhappy with is the leg position and it was the hardest thing to do by far. Im just stumped as to where i can put it and make such a large and bulky model look like he's truckin. I havent given up though.

Leigen_Zero wrote:These khornate orks are looking top-notch though, 2 suggestions though, 1. Berserker Stormboys, 2. Looted defiler/brass scorpion/bloodthirster (wtf?)

Thanks, with the new codex it seems SB's are pretty much mandatory plus i have some pretty fun ideas for them. I kicked around the idea of making a really f*ed up thirster squig beastie for fun around the time i came up with the idea for the army. There are tons of Demon Hunter players in my area so i could even field it regularly as is with the adversary additions just for fun

Edit: Would raptor jumps or just spiked up assault marine jumps be fluffier w/ World Eaters? I havent played since the last Chaos dex where raptors were a purely undivided perk so my gut reaction says marine jump packs would look best. Plus obviously id be throwing a few of both in cause they gotta be ramshackle and totally MacGuyvered out.

I really like the look and feel of the army. It always seemed to me that World Eaters and Orks would hang out at the same bars.

In the new Chaos dex, Raptors can be given any mark....so you could in theory have khorne raptors. Don't use Marine jump packs...don't defile these awesome conversions with something so mamby-pamby...lol....

just noticed how muich bigger the warboss' jaw actually is. but I have another idea. how about making his tounge a little larger, so that it really comes out of the4 mouth a little. or would that be too slaneesh?

and "MacGuyvered" is one hell of a word. we should totally use that more often.

Like i said earlier im not opposed to it per se, but id rather keep the blatant mutations to a minimum. I liked your previous idea of making the helm a bit more ornate.

Mmmk, i like how my nob turned out so i think hes basicly done. Again, i am going to make all my nobs with a specific khornate theme, this one is my bloodletter boy. Hes officially the first member of "Da Brass" (get it? )

I need to do a little sanding/smoothing on the greenwork on his legs but other than that i think hes done.

Next up, I totally spaced and found my old rhino i made for these guys. This was actually the second thing i did for this project and it must have been immediatly after games day 06 cause thats where i got the FW doors. Now that the trukk model has come out i think ill tear off the top hatch and have the boarding plank and wrecking ball jutting out the top. I just gotta make it a bit more orky. Any suggestions?

Now to finish the boys!

well, if you're going to use it as pick up, you'll definetly have to build it more open-topped. the top could be just the main plattform all orks climb on from inside the tank. and since a truck is a lot faster you should enhace the engines, bigger exhaustpipes always work in my book

the wheel/track section is very cool, but it doesn't show enough. maybe cutting out some of the lower armor. and you should get something orky in front. a dozerblade maybe, or buzzsaws or something.

keep 'em coming.

Yea i just gotta pick up that trukk kit then ill be able to finish it. Im just debating whether or not to paint what i have beforehand so i dont get swamped with painting toward the back end of the project. If i do all the fun stuff like build crazy vehicles and psycho nobs i will have no motivation to make 90 boyz.

Question:

I finished the boys i had left and i'm going to start painting what i got. I dont want to do it until i have a hold on what the basing is gonna look like though. I was thinking of doing a lighter color theme for the base as my minis will be a bit on the dark/gritty side. Desert/ruins comes to mind both color wise and backstory wise (ancient khorne ruins). Ive got these really cool scale bricks that i love using that would look real cool for ancient stone if painted right.

Givin the test model in my first post anyone agree/disagree or have any other ideas?

An Axe off a bloodthirster might be an idea if you're looking for a big,And suitable for the Khornate artifact that was on the planet if ya wanted to work it in that way.

Too recognizable IMO, the artifact in question in my head was more nondescript like a text or some info rather than a superweapon. That said i had looked at using it but his hand isnt the right size to carry an axe that thick. I think it would lopside the model.
