that is the test model minus the mat varnish to seal paint etc.
and instead of lava skinks i already had the idea of having one skink on each lava mans base holding a sign with a lizardman rune which would be the guys name

If you model scales and paint them brownish/grey it would make a great crust and it would bind them into the more scaly skinks.

the idea is they just came out of the volcano, and are literally molten lava. the round base is because it was a spare model. this was just a test model, and i liked it so far.
also i'm not worried about making scales or anything like that because they are lava. also i'm building a display base with a temple built around a volcano, and a lava field that will tie them in enough the army.

Yeah, I think you'll need to do some working tying it in to the rest of the army. Not to be overly negative, but I don't see anything right now that tells me that it's from a Lizardman army. I mean, if you hadn't told me that, I could've assumed it was from a Tyranids count-as army, or a Chaos army.
It's an interesting idea, but I think if you're going to do it, I think it needs to be more sharply executed - right now, I can't really tell anything about the model just by looking at it. Maybe some burning footprints, or show how it's oozing up from a cracked volcanic landscape.
Right now - and I mean this only in the most constructive way - it looks like fluorescent bubblegum wrapped around a bloodthirster.

it's actually only slightly bigger than a black orc, and much duller in person, the camera just seemed to make it glow, that last couple of pics are actually what it looks like most of the time.
also about tying it in, with the display board several of them will be actually coming out of the volcano at the top of the temple i'm building, and others will be descending the stairs alongside a lava flow. each base will also have a layer of cork (already on the bases of the rest of my army) and the edges are gonna have lava coming along the sides like there is a thin layer of rock just above a lava flow.
each kroxigor is also gonna have some lizardmanish weapon to tie them in some more, and they'll all have some bronze work done on them like the metal on my other lizardmen.
like i said this was a test model to see if it looks like lava, and to see if the paint scheme would work. this is in no way a true reflection for the final product just something to go by right now until i am ready to make the eight krox.
so i'll ask the right question now. do you guys think, with some lizardman weapons, maybe some crusty scales on their back, and alongside the volcano temple, that this would be a viable alternative for a kroxigor?

Yes, why not? It could look very cool. I just don't think it's quite there yet. But you're well on your way to having a cool alternative. Maybe make a kroxigor shaped head or something like that.

well i do have 8 of the new cold one head sitting round doing nothing so that could be the basis for the head, but it'll only look like some odd protrusion. see i used hot glue, as that stuff dries easy, and is much simpler to use than elmers, so basic shapes like eyes and such are completely lost. if you look close at the "face" you'll see a failed attempt at a gaping mouth

If you've already got some Krox and are willing to sacrifice them to make some interesting minis, what about making a conglomeration of the lava man and the Krox - to make it look sort of like a Kroxigor-Lava Elemental?
So maybe have a Kroxigor torso, arms, and head coming out of a column of lava, painted the same colors as the lava. I like the idea of Kroxigor shapes emerging from the lava.
As far as the colors go, I think you're most definitely on the right track, though.

yea the color of this test is way brighter than it will be after i apply the matte varnish to seal the paint and dull it up some.
also i do not have kroxigors, which is why the project was started. to buy the 8 krox I'd need to spend $136 more than i already have. instead bought black orcs (since they are almost as big and much more squat like I'd imagine a lava man) and for a total of $238 bought a 2250pt lizardman list vs. the $310 some I'd have to spend buying real krox, plus it gave me chance to convert and do something no one ever does.
so instead of using krox heads do you think that the new cold one heads would work? as i do have 8 of those lying around from the battalion set

Oh, sorry - misunderstood. The Cold One heads? Yeah, sure - that'd be a way to give it some good lizardy-ness.

I think that you dont need to do anything to the heads, but adding crusted lava as "Scales" and maybe gouts of flame to the back (the GW site has an awsome tutorial on flame using green stuff) would be very cool, perhaps some bronze lizardman symbols to help tie it in. I know you said before that it is molten lava, but even in rela lava flows the top lair will sometimes harden into a crust, otherwise cool idea, but it will definately take alot of work and a cool carring board for me to buy in to it.

ok so the scales are a definite yes then, but the heads? i dunno what exactly to do other than that because i don't have any large lizardman weapons, and the little trinkets on the lizardman sprue are way too small to survive lava (pretty friggin hot). so does anyone have any specific ideas on things to add to the guys to make them fit in much better than right now?

But remember if you're keeping with the idea that these are the spirits of Lizardmen heroes rising in the form of lava, then it doesn't matter whether the trinkets or weapons would survive the lava - because the trinkets or weapons would be made of the lava. I know you're trying to keep this project as cheap as possible, but I think to make them fit in, you're going to need to purchase either a couple Krox or some Saurus just to get the bitz to make it look more Lizardy.

I agree on the scales, lava, once out of a volcano, begins to harden pretty quickly so modelling scales is a must. May I suggest not using hot glue gun glue as I've tried and found it is messy/likely to fall apart, perhaps some glyph plates here and there (perhaps the chest or back) to represent the way in which the spirit is bound to the lava, and a cold one head would look sweet, paint the skin like lava and the scales like the crust, this is a very interesting idea for a model, pretty cool that you are thinking outside the box.
good luck with this one

yea the hot glue work really well only for the basic model itself as a casing around the entire thing. which bits from the cold on rider, and saurus sprue do you guys think would look best on them? i was thinking not the skulls but stuff like the tags attached to saurus skin, and the little plates with dino heads on them. also if you guys think it would look ok to add a single row of back spines on them like the back spines of the normal lizardmen?

plates placed at obvious joints, like the shoulders, elbows, waist etc would emphasise the 'lava golem' look, if the spines were painted crust-colour they would match (if you feel up to the challenge you could model balrog-style flames down the back!!), perhaps arm them with large two-handed weapons to tie in further with the kroxigor.
thought of something, the saurus (i think, may be wrong, dont play fantasy) come with wierd head-crest helmet things dont they? perhaps you could use one of those as a head (sort of an all-metal temple guard style affair)

actually they don't come with any head piece, the head is one solid piece. the two handed weapons are a problem too as i don't have krox weapons lying round and only they have two handed weapons out of the whole lzardman army. i could custom built something from a spear and one of the hand weapon clubs, but that might not look big enough
