hi guys, i am new to this forum but thought that this is the right place to post some of my work.

I had been collecting 40K space marines for a about 2 months and decided i was fed up with not having any real good artillery support. so i put my fingers where my mouth is and got to work.

My friend had an old space marine land raider that was falling to peices so i bought it from him for £10, then for the support i artillery i though that since fighting imperial guard i liked the Basaliks and their earthshakers.

So i had a landraider, alot of designing to do and thinking. i then went onto the GW website and bought the sprue's of a Basalisk containing the gun and the sheild.

Time to get to work!

this was about 7-8 months ago so sorry i have no pics of the work in progress, but to put it plain their was alot of chopping!

I had decided to chop out the front plating of the Land raider and replace it with some rhino dors, a dozer blade and the sheild. the basalisk floor was chopped to size and placed inside. the gun sheild was also chooped and fitted near along the lines of where the old ones were.

I wanted to keep the heavy bolter and lascannons but as i had removed the seating for the heavy bolter i needed to fin a new one! i used the top hole where you can place a gunner or hatch and expanded it so that the heavy bolter would fit.

beleive me, for a project like this you need alot of greenstuff!

so after a spray and a lick of paint done in a hurry and my painting skills lack .... well lets say their not the best so dont expect too much!

Hey, wow, the gun shield fits really nicely right there. Pretty slick.

yes, overkill a little. its more for apocolypse to go with my 7000 point marine army and 4 other land raiders! - they work well togther!

Seeing as one could pretty much just buy a Land Raider and a Basalisk for the price, I think it deserves a point drop.

That being said. Awesome tank. I could see Iron Hands fielding these en masse.

I relaly like the way you have the hull put together, it looks smooth and doesn't just look like two kits thrown together. finish the paint job for iron warriors and everything is gravy. Play wise that just seems entirely to insane for my tastes, at least for anything less than an apocalypse game.

Still a cool model, however.

That Mangonel is hideous, reminds me of the Land Raider Terminus (a most lumpen and unlovely of all human imperium tanks).

This model (the OP) at least looks like the pieces belong together. Nice work.

hey thanks for the replys guys, glad you like it!

damn and blast about that other guy, do you know when he did it? the thing i dont like is how the sheilding sticks out the top.

and it doesnt fit in normal games, i would have to have the opponats permission first and its too pricy. i have asked people at GW shops and they have said that it should be around 310 - 320, but i need offiacil and age of strife is the easyist!

and for apocolyse this tank fares well, able to take out the best infantry and the most heavy tanks. what really spoils it it the fact that you cannot fire ordinace and other weapons together. wasted firepower.

thanks guys!

iI have just been on the age of strife website and worked out how many points an earthshaker is - 60. so technically could i just add that on to a land raider and it come out as 310?

cheers,

Matt

While I wouldn't field this vehicle myself due to personal preferences, the custom job looks smashing!
You've managed to do the kit-bashing without the bashing, and that can never be bad.

A thing about VDR:
Imperial Armour and VDR units are generally overpriced. For one, it makes it easier for opponents to
give you their consent (as you're spending more than you'd need, were it a GW regular unit), and to
make sure that those units aren't preferable to regular codex-ones. So in my experience, as long as
the unit isn't made of beards and , most will just enjoy playing against unusual units.

I remember seeing some calculations on VDR-costs on this forum a while back, but I can recall what
discussion that was in. But if memory serves, you could usually knock 10% off the top and still be in
the clear.

Heck, my Imperial Guard Land Speeder cost close to 100 points, and it was worse than the SM one

I'd like to chime in with kudos. Most "stick a big gun onna Land Raider" come out looking like the uglier class of 'orky' conversions. Yours looks well made and well thought out!

thanks, i have a way with making thing up as i go along!

I do like my VDR's i am thinking of a SM landspeeder with a Storm Bolter in place of a Heavy bolter and a Lascannon mounted underneath?!?! what do you think?

another crazy conversion of mine was a dreadnought Marauder. Its a crazy crazy ths just for fun - not that practicle. its a four legged dreadnought with a frond mounted heavy bolter for close protection, a dreadnought cc arm with heavy flamer, and here is the biggy - the gun arm has been converted to weild a long barreled demolisher cannon! hugely over over over kill but fun as fun can be! it sure performs, i was playing against a friend who was really cocky that it was going to do bad on its first game, and said he was going to destroy it with his cc chaos squad with khorne. i got first turn - unluckily for him. first shot ... no scatter ... no 1's. whole squad dead. ohh yeah!

will post pics if you want!

cheers guys!

The model looks great. Keep up the good work.

However as a useful tank on the battle field I feel that this would suffer from some sort of multiple role disorder (similar to multiple personality disorder).
Basically what it comes down to is what role is this supposed to fill? Is it artillery? If so then you have wasted a bunch of points on the non artillery aspects of the vehicle. i.e. the las cannons and heavy bolters aren't paying for themselves. Artillery pieces should devote everything to hiding and firing its main gun, everything else is a waste of points. Is it a main battle tank or assault vehicle? If so the the artillery piece isn't being fully utilized and its points value is being wasted. You would probably be better served putting a battle cannon (main battle tank) or demolisher cannon (assault vehicle) on it instead and using cheaper artillery vehicles for artillery purposes.

Actually, it's a big nasty piece of self-propelled artillery that can defend itself.

Personally, I've always liked the idea of a landraider with a demolisher cannon in the front instead.
Or maybe even one with the laser destroyer from Imperial Armour in there, and no lascannons.

thanks, i just had the earge to do it. its more of a model than a peice to use. and the role of the tank is for apocalypse - the points hardly get noticed their, and it has nice artillery for taking out that annoying long ranged unit of tank on the other side of the map, or to take out the 3 lascannon strong chaos predator that pops up in front of you. it is a multi purpose tank. its not dedicated to anything. besides - its also to help with the 'fear factor' upon the enemy, they see it before the game and images flash before them of what it could do to them - so the try to take it out with all they can - drawing their firepower away from my more precious units.

Check the GW website, apocalypse section, looking for the Land Raider Ares.

i like you land raider, if people say that mines a little overkill -- what would they say about yours! that awsome, but i wonder how many shots you would get from it??? i think you should re-consider the auto cannon, or at least carve a little of the hole away for it to sit better, other that that is brilliant! those people say about the guns being mounted forward - i think they should because who want to jump out of a vehicle straight into strength 9 ap 2 pummeling lascannons after all?!?!? but then you have heavy bolters, i still wouldnt want to get shot by them ... but thats just personall prefferences!

ahh, good stuff matt! nice and smooth insertion of the earthshaker looks pretty pro. i personally dispise the one that 'beat you to it', too WW1ish for my liking. anyway, even if you just added some simple highlights to your paint job it would be a formidable conversion.
