Alright, My space marines are the Angels Malignant Chapter. And they notably diverge from the normal Codex Astares. and again this only uses 4e rules so I don't know how good/bad this army works in 5e
First, I have the "See, but don't be seen" trait, which allows me to have infiltrating Tactical, and devastator squads, at +3 points per model.
Second, I have "Trust your battle brothers", which gives my command, tactical, assault, and Veteran squads the option of having true grit, and counter attack. In addition, all models with bolters get a close combat weapon for free.
I have the flesh over steel as a disadvantage which means transports take up fast attack options, I am limited to 1 tank.
So just with that, you can see that I have space marines who can be amazingly expensive pointwise. which means I don't have to spend as much money on minatures, or paint but it means that every casualty I take is going to hurt me badly.
HQ: Chaplain w/ a pair of master crafted lightning claws, artificer armor, termi honors, jump pack, melta bomb, adamantine mantle, and frag grenades. = 246 points.
Inquisitor lord w/ power weapon and psycannon= 90 points (He's an ally from the daemon hunters codex, and I need to have him for the vindicare assasin that i want)
Troops:
5 man scout squad 4 snipers, 1 heavy bolter 90 points
9 man tactical squad w/ 1 plasma cannon, 1plasma rifle, frags, sergeant with 2 lightning claws. (infiltrate, true grit) 208 points
Fast attack:
9 assault marines w/ jump packs, frags, melta bombs, 2 flamers 1 sergeant w/ jump pack, frag, meltas, termi honors, and power fist. = 292
3 land speeder tornados with assault cannons. 240
9 assault marines w/ jump packs, frags, melta bombs, 2 plasma pistol 1 sargent w/ jump pack, frag, meltas, termi honors, and lightning claws = 295
Heavy support
Whirlwind w/ dozer blades, extra armor, pintle mounted storm bolter smoke launchers search light, power of the machine spirit 136 points
8 man devie squad with 4 missile launchers. (infiltrate) 224 points
Elites
Vindicare assassin 110points ( this guy will kill all leaders, synapse creatures, and nasty heavy weapons users)
this ads up to 2000 points
Finally, Can you tell me if you think this army type is still viable with 5e rules? Was it shot to begin with?
Oh... and I was also thinking about getting rid of a guy from my devie and 3 from my TAC squads, taking out my whirlwind entirely, losing the gun servitor with the plasma cannon, and getting a heavy 7 man heavy bolter devie squad

If you are asking.
I think you are wasting points here and there.
Your Chaplain is over points. Maybe lose the Mantle. He can only have 100 points in Wargear.
Inquisitor Lords have to take Retinues.
Scout squad is OK.
Everything else is OK.
I would lose the Heavy in the Tac squad. Reason is you are paying 3x10 points to give 7 Bolters guys an extra attack in close combat. Better to give 8 Bolter guys the extra attack, especially since you are Infiltrating. You don't need the Heavy. Also I would take a Meltagun. But Plasma is good too.
Whirlwind I would take it stock and hide it behind a building. Otherwise I wouldn't take it. It is only AV 11.
-------------
So you lose the Mantle, you lose the Whirlwind upgrades, you maybe lose the Plasma Cannon. You take Heavy Bolters and a Plasma Cannon with the Inquisitor w/ a couple bullet catchers and put him in that same building.
If you want to keep the Mantle you can lose the Terminator Honours and the Master Crafted Weapon.
And that's it, really. It's a pretty good list. Purity Seals are good too.

Thanks alot, but the chaplain only has like 96 points of wargear, remember that master work weapons dont count towards the limit and the chaplain starts out with a 4+ invern. But i think I will take the heavy out of the tactcal squad and take the adamantine cloak off the chaplain. and maybe make him a commander instead. that way I can get a few more guys, and get purity seals for my assault squads

Ok so If I get rid of the adamantine cloak thingy, the plasma cannon, the upgrades for the whirlwind, i have 125 points to spend.
here's how i could do it
10 man tactical squad w/ 1 plasma cannon, 1plasma rifle, frags, sergeant with 2 lightning claws. (infiltrate, true grit) 230 points
give the inquisitor a retinue of 1 sage and 2 warriors both gun servitors, one with heavy bolter and one with a plasma cannon?
that gives me 18 points with which i can give purity seals to all my jump happy friends
thanks for the assist

The quick version:
Only troop choices count as scoring units (not their dedicated transports) that can secure objectives. 2 out of 3 missions involve securing objectives. Non-troops units can CONTEST objectives, but cannot secure them. So without troops choices, the best you can hope for is wiping your opponents units off the table to get the win.

So I need more shooty less CCs? so I would take out the squad with flamers keep the one thats good vs heavy infantry. that gives me 292 points to spend on a Tac squad.... hm....
I hate to argue with the people asking for advice, so I don't mean to sound that way, and thats not what I'm trying to do.... BUT...
My strategy is to use the tac squads (which can last for a while in combat) to hold down units, while my assault marine jump in and swarm them ( the only time a space marine army will EVER outnumber an opponent 'cept for GK) aside from that my assaulters go around killing stuff as usual but they play that key role which the landspeeder can't fufill(spelling =( ).
so am I right to take the assault marines at the expense of more shooty and a better tack squad? Or should I get a better tac squad, more cover fire for them, but less help in close combat.

This is why I say that. Right now you have this.
Turn 1
S T
A+C A Shooty
Turn 2
T
S A+C A
Shooty
More or less. So you switch the assault squad for a tac squad you get this.
Turn 1
S T T
A+C Shooty
Turn 2
T T
S A + C
Shooty
Makes sense? The tac squad and the assault squad are largely infantry squads. You still have the hardcore assault squad with the Chaplain to rush up and to counter attack their own forces.
The tac squad is still just as good in close combat, in other words. It has true grit and a vet. It's just not as fast but Infiltrating gets it there anyway.
It's a good list either way. You just get an extra scoring unit this way.
