Warning, very few pix as my camera died.

Better throw this in - My army list:
Palatine, Bolter, Book | 5 Celestians, 2 Meltaguns | Immolator, TL-Hvy Flamer, Smoke
3 x 5 Celestians, 2 Meltaguns | Immolator, TL-Hvy Flamer, Smoke
2 x 10 Battle Sisters, Hvy Flamer, Meltagun, VSS w/ Book | Rhino, Smoke
5 Inq Storm Troopers, 2 Flamers
3 x 5 Dominions, 2 Flamers | Immolator, TL-Hvy Flamer, Smoke
3 x HS Immolator, TL-Hvy Flamer, Smoke

Game 1:
First assigned to Table 1 to fight... one of the guys I rode down with. So we traded and I went to Table 2 to play against Mark. His army was something like
Eldrad
Avatar
5 Harlies w/ Shadowseer
9 Dire Avengers, Bladestorm in Waveserpent w/ TL-Brightlance
9 Dire Avengers, Bladestorm & Defend
3 Jetbikes, ShuriCann + Warlock w/ Destructor
3 Jetbikes, ShuriCann + Warlock w/ Embolden
2 x 5 Rangers (not pathfinders)
Wraithlord (don't remember what he had)
3 War Walkers w/ 2 Scatter Lasers

12" deployment, 5 objectives, he went first.

I'm not going to bother you with the play by play, since I don't have a ton of pix. Here's one from the bottom of 3, I think.

I was able to drive his center and pretty much make what anti-tank he had useless. It really helped that the Avatar threw his spear twice and charged twice into vehicles... and didn't do a danged thing. Oh, and my meltaguns wouldn't roll less than a 5 either (to hit or to wound) I shot 6 melta shots at his Wraithlord to kill him - and it only took that many because he got a couple cover saves.
The game basically ended when I tank-shocked his GJB and Ranger squad on the left off the table and was still able to shoot his war walkers. Coupled with him making a late game play for my objective, but I had 3 squads in transports able to move 12" and kill his units off.
I end up tabling him except for Eldrad and Avatar, and I grab 3 objectives. Neither of us score bonus points for the round, as I ignored his high-point units.

Looking back, Mark didn't play poorly. He made only 2 errors that I saw: 1 - Fortuned his Wraithlord, but didn't get him into any cover to be able to use said Fortune against my meltaguns. 2 - (and this could be just as much dice as decision making) Worried a little bit too much about keeping the Avatar in 12" to stay fearless, which allowed me to pin the Avatar in with vehicles and isolate him from the rest of my army.

Win 17 - 3

Game 2:
Assigned to Table 16... wow, guess not getting those 3 points really dropped me down! I face off against Ivan, another Sisters player fielding a bit more standard mech list. We tried to get re-assigned here too, but after round 1 it's not allowed. His army (as best I recall):
Jump Canoness
Priest (with Dominions)
Inquisitor
Callidus Assassin
2 x 10 Battle Sisters, Hvy Flamer, Flamer, VSS w/ Book - Rhino
10 Battle Sisters, Hvy Flamer, Flamer, Imagifer, VSS w/ Book - Rhino
5 Dominions, 2 flamer, 2 melta, Immolator
6(ish) Seraphim, 2 hand flamers, VSS
2 Exorcists
Penitent Engine

Spearhead Setup with a big building in the middle, Annihilation mission, he went first.

His Exorcists were the biggest problems I had - they're murder on AV11. But I was able to run the choo-choo train at them (smoked vehicle in front with others right behind so that you only get oblique shots on their side armor... 3+ cover save ftw) and limit the damage.

I split the building and came at him, while he played extremely defensively, except for his Dominion Squad and Canoness... which wasn't enough.

My army coming to get him,

Some interesting points:
His Callidus didn't come in until turn 5 - and by then it was WAY too late. She killed the rest of one Dominion squad, then got shot to death.
He didn't know exactly when to use Faith, so I showed him how on turn 2, let it slide on turn 3, then shot his Canoness on turn 4 with meltaguns with no Inv save.

Weird ruling of the day:
He tried to use the Imagifer from one unit on another to get off Divine Guidance. I didn't think that he could so I had him roll his 2 dice, and if needed that we would grab a judge to see if he could roll a 3rd... and he roll 11, doh! So we grab a judge... and end up getting three involved. Comes down to the wording that "a Faithful unit can roll 3d6" - so they say while it's against intent, that he can. Ok! Weird, but ok. (FWIW, he rolled another 6, so it failed - epic doh!)

He comes after my units and basically trades 1 for 1. But I have more units, and while 1 or 2 might survive from my units, I can focus down his units - killing them to a man... er, woman.

In the end, I've lost 4 vehicles and 2 squads and he's lost his whole army except an Exorcist and one Rhino. 6KP - 13KP, and I get both bonus objectives.

Win 20-3

Game 3:
Assigned to Table 6 this time. My opponent is Patrick (Somnicide here) who brings a Khorne Daemons list. His army:
2 Bloodthirsters
2 x 5 Bloodcrushers
3 x 8 Bloodletters
2 Soulgrinders
Daemon Prince

Patrick's BatRep of this same fight - with a couple more pics.

Regular 12" setup, 2 objectives, he went first.

He opted to bring the big boys in early, both Bloodthirsters, Bloodcrushers and the Daemon Prince on turn 1.

I was able to form my vehicles into pockets, creating areas where only my models could go, without him going through a vehicle that he needed 6's to hit. This and his inability to make a 3+ save pretty much sealed the game. His Daemon Prince died on turn 2 and both Bloodthirsters on turn 3 - with his Bloodcrushers taking too long to get up through difficult terrain.

Pic

I did make one critical error right at the end. I got cocky, thinking that 2 Immolators and 4 squads of shooting could kill 2 Bloodcrushers - and I left my IST's out in the open on top of my objective. He made some great saves (for once), and had one guy with a wound left on him, but was able to charge my IST's, beating them in combat and making them run off. I then killed it on my turn - but now I only had the one objective (he had a damaged Soulgrinder still on the table) and the game was over. I got both bonus points, he got 1.

Win 16-8

Game 4: (warning, no more pics)
Getting up there, now on Table 3. There's another Sisters player over on Table 2 - sweet! My opponent this morning is Ron, another Daemon player. His army is a smorgasbord of Khorne, Nurgle, & Slaanesh. His army:
Bloodthirster
Great Unclean One
5 Fiends of Slaanesh
2 x 8 Bloodletters
10 Plaguebearers
10 Plaguebearers w/ Icon
3 Soulgrinders

Spearhead deploy, 5 objectives, I go first.

Since it worked so well last time, I setup in pretty much the same box formation, wanting to keep all my options open. He chooses his Icon unit of Plaguebearers and all 3 Soulgrinders to drop on turn 1. The grinders all scatter a bit away, the Plaguebearers right up onto my left front. Ok, having never played vs a Nurgle daemons before, I severely underestimated the amount of firepower it would take to down these - choosing to go after the Soulgrinders instead. Oops.
The standout points are - he pretty much missed with every Soulgrinder shot, but I couldn't kill them! Nearly 20 melta shots and I managed to get 2 Weapon Destroyed results.... sunuva.
My turns tend to take a little while - because I have 22 units, but I noticed that sometimes Ron's turns took longer. Let me put this straight out there: I do not think that he was intentionally slow-playing. Because (especially early on) he was kind of kicking my butt.
I managed to refocus onto objectives and start taking out his Troops.

Weird Ruling of the Day #2 (hey, on day 2)
We had a situation that I've never encountered before. His Soulgrinder charged a unit of mine that was between two Immolators - and a unit of Bloodletters charged the left Immolator. He resolved the Bloodletters first, and he managed to get a Pen 6 on the Immolator: wounding 2 of the Sisters engaged with the Soulgrinder and one failed her save. So before actually pulling the casualty, I asked a judge over because I knew this would be weird. What happens if I pull the only model in base contact? My other sisters weren't in base because there was nowhere for them to move to in the Charge Reaction moves. So what happens? Is the combat failed? What? The judge ruled that "by intent" the battle should still happen. I then had to give him a little crap, because he was the one that ultimately ruled that the RaW stood for the Imagifer ruling the day before, but it was good-natured. To be honest, this is how I felt it should've happened: I know I would've felt screwed if I was the assaulter and had that happen to me.

This is where he made his one big mistake. In the far, left corner was the only objective that was away from any of the others - on Turn 4 his last Plaguebearer unit deepstruck right on top of it. But then he ran them right at me and into the fray. If he had sat them there, I only had two empty Immolators that were anywhere near him - I'm pretty sure he would have won.

But then it boiled down to one Battle Sister Squad (10) in combat with his Plaguebearers (2) - if I eliminate the squad I win. On his turn he charged in the Bloodthirster to support (kills 3). I manage to do 3 wounds to the Plaguebearers, he fails all the saving throws... but then makes 2 FnP, leaving one there. We end with no one controlling any objectives. Here the time issue came into play, because if we had played another turn, I am confident that I would've won. I had another Battle Sister Squad to go claim another objective and my IST's (they just weren't quite there on Turn 5). He had his Bloodthirster and GUO left in the action - and that was about it. On VPs I had killed 715 worth of his stuff, he had killed 550 of mine - difference of 165, which was less than 175, so straight up draw.

Ah well, I made the mistake early on, he made one later - and I made another mistake late by not going for objectives sooner.

This game was particularly punishing for a draw (8-8 instead of 10-10), and we both got one of the bonus points.

Draw 9-9.

Game 5:
Oh how the mighty have fallen! Down to Table 10! lawlz. My opponent for this game was David. During the lunch break, one of my travel companions was commenting on what a great Game 4 he had against a Stealer Shock army that had ended up beating him by making a bunch of cover saves at the end and I said, "man, why can't I get guys dependent on cover?" Lo and behold, David was his opponent. He walked up to the table with his 74 genestealers, looked at my army, and shook my hand and said "Grats on the win, man." What can you do? I mean really?

I'm not even going to explain any of the battle - because there wasn't one. For the record, he put up what fight he could - but if there's an army that mine is uniquely designed to take out - Stealer Shock is it (and to a lesser extent, Horde Ork).

The mere fact that David ran his army at me and tried to engage my models, destroying a couple in the process, rather than running and hiding in the corners and using Lictor rerolls to keep his army off the table to deny KP - that made him my favorite opponent.

FWIW, his army:
Broodlord + 12 Genestealers
12 Genestealers + Scuttle
5 x 10 Genestealers + Scuttle
3 Lictors + Feeder Tendrils

Win 20-3

Thoughts:

I finished with 82 Battle Points (5th), but my rush painting job on the vehicles and IST's (21 pts) drop me to 15th overall. (Oh, and 49 in sports... someone gave me a 9!!!! THAT BASTARDO, I'LL GET HIM!!! ...uh, j/k?)

I also enjoyed that my army was fairly unique. I had a lot of stop and stares at my tables when my army was on display (which ended up being a lot, because I didn't get paint-judged until Day 2). I would walk back to the table and someone would be there trying to count how many Immolators I had out. And after game 2 each opponent I played had the "Oh, you're that army?"

Overall, I was a bit surprised (probably shouldn't have been) at the amount of 4th Edition style lists and gameplay. Not necessarily in the games that I played (of those, only Ivan had a 4th Ed list... but Sisters are good all-rounders now so should be able to handle it), but in the games I watched in the hall.

I had a shot at getting to Marc - which I think would've been a ton of fun. I'm not saying I would've won (putting this disclaimer because apparently I've given off the impression that I think my army = auto win over Marc's), but it would've been a real test for him.

More than that though, I had a friggin blast. I enjoyed meeting the guys from Dakka: Blackmoor, Janthkin, Yakface, Somnicide, Don Mondo, etc (if I missed you, I'm sorry). The venue was terrific, and they made it 1000% better than the year prior.

If you have any thoughts on going to a single event - this one should be a definite consideration.

David Faye is a good guy from San Diego. He was worried about getting a ticket (he forgot to buy one) and I was glad that he was able to get in. He wins a lot of RTTs and when he is not winning overall, he is getting best sportsmanship. He is a great guy to play.

Nice report Stjohn, it's always fun reading through the report of a more quirkey army. It would seem on face value that you've created somewhat of a paper-scissor-rock army, however I expect through some clever tactics you've managed to tighten that up a lot so that you're looking more at minimising the impact of that to where you can still roll someone with a couple of good vehicle cover saves and the all important first turn.
I look forward to seeing how it goes at future tourneys. I'd love to make it over to one of the US GT's some day, from your reports and others it sounds like a completely different experience to our GT's

Indeed. He was a pleasure to play - even when my brain was starting to go into shut-down mode from having played too many games over the weekend. I know he got Fave Opponent votes from both me and his Game 4 opponent... I was a bit dismayed to not see him on the podium for Fave Opponent or one of the Sportsman awards.

When I started the army, I thought that I might be doing a bit of a Rock-Paper-Scissors army - which I didn't mind overly with the expectation of there being a lot of Orks and Daemons at the GT. Turned out after play, that it wasn't so dependent upon matchup. You'll notice from the reports that I only ever went first once (this was by design). Even against highly shooty armies, I'm able to deploy in a manner where you're only going to be able to take out 2(ish) tanks. What could very well get me, would be when I'm going first and deploy aggressively against a shooty opponent - who then succeeds on a Seize the Initiative roll. That would hurt.

Nice writeup. It was a good game, I had fun with it (you definitely got a 10 from me - I can't blame you for my dice ;-) )

yeah I failed 12 out of 14 saves to lose the daemon prince and both bloodthirsters - that hurt.

That and every unit scattering directly away from you on turn 1 (your faith in the emperor is strong) were really the only atrocious dice rolls I had.

I could have come back from that but you played a really tight game and just flat out beat me. Sorry I was so tired and grumpy by that time - nice of you not to mention it (yes I am man enough to admit that I was getting fussy.)

edit and it was 3 bloodletter units.

Fixed. I didn't think you were grumpy at all! I felt bad after you asked to keep track of shooting units, because with 22 units all on the table, it would take a better man than I am to keep track of all opposing units that have/haven't shot... especially when I kept jumping around like that.

For what it is worth, I went and checked the relevant sections of the rule book for that explosion and I think even by RAW the grinder would still get its attacks since they were in base to base at the start of the combat, just not the resolution steps.

That being said, if something were close like that I would definitely make sure and resolve the stuff that couldn't have any effect on the other combats.

Very nice read, St. John! Glad to see you made it as far as you did, in your first GT. Can't wait to see how you do next year.

Shame about the camera but your write ups are excellent! That's a wack load of tanks, something I didn't really visualise when I read your list.

Thanks for taking the time and it sounds like the event is thoroughly enjoyable. Might have to convince the wife that we should go to Vegas. If not, how is Salt Lake City? I think you're only about 10 hrs from here.

2nd GT, but thanks for the well wishes

I highly recommend the Vegas trip. I wish I could recommend the trip to SL, but there's not much to draw a gamer here. Don't get me wrong, there's beautiful scenery and a great place to vacation... just nothing really large on the gaming front.

I thoroughly enjoyed my game with Ron. At no point did I think that he was doing anything fishy whatsoever. While I wish that we had another turn - I also realize that if I hadn't made the mistakes that I did, that I would not have needed another turn. Me & Ron both made a couple of mistakes, and we both managed to recover to a Draw. I would very much like another game with Ron where we're not under the pressure/time constraints that we were.

No. He couldn't come to the Ard Boyz.

Of the five people who can really give me a challenge...

One couldn't come.

One got tossed out (oh boy).

One lives in another state.

One has confidence problems.

One was there and we didn't end up playing.

Not sure what kind of army I'd have faced, I don't know if John has 2 more Rhinos to stick Sisters in.

Doubt I could have beaten it to be honest. The army has way too much going for it.
