Hey.. I finally finished my marines, (with the exception of Sterngard, drop pods, and other future purchases).. so I am tackling the mountain of Orkiness I have..

The first squad I painted was deffcoptas, and I was happy with how they turned out.. and how quickly I was able to paint them.. so I happily moved to my first infantry squad.. Kommandos.

I am doing an "all plastic" Ork army, so my Kommandos are all plastic troopers with "swords" as opposed to other squads with axes or with chainswords.. looted from fantasy to get most of the swords. and used the "german" style of head/helm..

so, over the course of 2 days, I have painted these guys.. a representative sample. I have a full squad of 15 done..

now.. to have this up front.. I have BAD vision.. corrected a bit, but subtle shading, color blending, etc.. are NOT something I can do. I have to limit myself to paints straight from the pot.. and I never have tried a wash, or a dip.. all these are "my best" for what it is worth.. I do not think my eyes can see better.

Within that constraint, any Comments and Criticism would be appreciated.

Not shabby on the paint job, Porkus. Not bad.
Have you THOUGHT about dipping? The difference it would make on these is AMAZING.

Also, mold lines make me hurt in my pee-pee spot.

frankly, I don't know HOW to dip.. I get the idea it is a 20:1 water/paint mix.. and most folks do it in black, or brown for orks..

since I put base decor on these, I guess turning them upside down and using pliers would be the best way of trying to do this..

any tips on how to dip, or a favorite paint brand (in the US) to use? Also, I am thinking I will need a mason jar .. right?

oh.. and MM.. I thought I had gotten the mold lines.. my fingers and touch couldn't find any..

and if it makes your pee-pee spot hurt.. wait till I start my SoB army..

yea those look pretty good for not being able to see them. i used to play with a guy that was color blind and only saw like hues of blue, but damn he could paint his ass off.
that being said a tip for the guns and weapons that is super easy and looks much better then just gun metal, is to paint them black and then just dry brush the gun metal over the black. start lightly until it "looks" good to you. gives weapons a cooler effect then just screaming silver

that is what I thought I did.. black primer and a heavy overbrush attempt using Boltgun Metal paint.. not mithril silver.. it might be the camera.. standard digital camera..

Try painting one black and then get the boltgun metal color on your brush and wipe it all off before you paint. Most people say to wipe off a bit but when I first started out drybrushing I left WAY too much paint on. You just want a smidge. And then repeat until it looks good to you.

Digging the orks though.

yea dry brushing takes a bit of getting used to it. what i do is get a nice thick paper towel. get some paint on your bursh and then i SWIRL the paint brush in a circle. youll notice that the bristles will turn silvery. then on a non painted section of the towel test it out. if the paint is too thick swirl some more in that circle of paint. practice on something usless like the actual sprue or a junk part. practice a few times and youll get it. good dry brushing is a GREAT skill to have

Your orks would benefit A LOT from a simple wash, especially the pants and the metal bits.

Go buy a bottle of BW's Badab Black. That stuff is worth its weight in gold.

You just take a brush, and then coat the entire model with it. Simple as that.

You can experiment with watering it down later or using different washes but for your first figure just go ahead and coat the whole thing in 100% Badab Black.

actually, i think devlan mud is better for browns and metallics. little bit more subtle imo

A wash hits the ENTIRE model? not leaving the skin alone? Even doing the mouth/teeth area?

All Devlan mud wash over whole model gives you ones like mine, on the dark and dirty side, but I like it!

Delvan Mud would work too. The wash will go naturally into the cracks so washing it over the teeth could work too. Badab Black looks decent shading Ork flesh.

delemon I completly agree with you

the washes don't just darken the recesses

some golden demon winners such as adam trepevski uses chardon granite mixed with gretchen green witch works pretty well

Yes. The FULL model. Skin, pantz, metalz, teef, ayz...EVERYTHING. Then leave it to dry by itself. DO NOT blow dry it or you will get the excess wash moving all about the place. At least that's what happens to me...wierd, because it doesn't happen with watered-down inks. To me, that is.

The red bases are, for me, to provide visual contrast against the figure. It is red craft sand, and I think it looks pretty good..

Fluffwise.. the entire army will be based on it, and that is cause they are fighting on a red-desert planet.. I have a couple terrain items that were already based with that stuff.. so I tied them in.

also.. it is coming up close to Christmas... Xmas Orks!

OK.. picked up some Devlan Mud and tried my hand at a wash.. WOW.. that really helps. I don't really know how to describe it, but the models look a LOT better muted.
