Columbus, Oh

OK.. I have a SM force that I am now calling Omega Marines (thanks to suggestions below)

but to continue.. I am done with painting! YES! (aside from the future purchases.. still want a Land Raider Crusader)

I have added a couple Missile Launcher Marines to the Tac squads, a LandSpeeder Typhoon, and have a FW Plasma Cannon en route (all still need painted)

so.. I felt I would throw this up here for anyone to comment..

and yes.. I have realized that they are pretty much too small to see the paint jobs.. sigh..

the main colors are black, purple and golden highlighting. I have no idea at this time the total point value of this force..

Currently it is..
Captain + command squad (Apothecary and Champion + 3 troops)
Chaplain
2 x Terminator squads - Sgt + 3 troopers + 3 options for HW
2x 10 man Assault squads
3x 10 man Tactical Squads with Rhinos (SB and HK Missiles)
Razorback with TL Lascannon
Razorback with TL Heavy Bolters
3x 6 man Scout squads - Sniper, Bolter and CCW/Pistol
2x 6 man Devastator squads (one with 2 Lascannon, 2 Missile Launchers, the other with 2 Heavy Bolters, Multimelta and Plasma Cannon)
Landspeeder Typhoon
Landspeeder
2x Landspeeder Tornado
Dread with MM and CCW/flamer
Dread with AC and CCW/SB
Dread with TL Lascannon and Missile Launcher.

I hopefully will add a Land Raider sometime soon.. as well as a unit of Sternguard (done, by modeling)

Now.. if anyone is noticing a GLARING omission in this list let me know.. I would love to know of anything I can add in plastic.. as this is a ALL PLASTIC army.. no metal models.

just thought I would throw this out.. I am feeling a little happy .. this is the first time I have "completed" an army.

Ok.. here are some requested closeups..

for those of you who have not read my Ork thread.. I am legally blind without my glasses, and have some "not perfect" vision with them.. I cannot shade colors, or do serious detail work.. so my bare heads are pretty sad. All this stuff looks good on the table, but under the scrutiny of a close up lens.. it suffers.

Anyhow.. keep that in mind and here are some closeups. I also realized that using a grey foam sheet to block out background was.. not too smart with a black and purple paint scheme.. drat.

Also.. the entire army is Mark 6 Beakie heads, with the exception of some Leader Types and vehicle drivers.. whew! Lottsa Beakies!

Um...hate to break it to ya but they don't look too bad close up either! Legaly blind - schmeagley blind... To me a clean, crisp paint job trumps a sloppy paint job with all the detail in the world hands down every time.

I like your flamer conversion on the AoBR Dread. I might have to borrow that idea for my AoBR one....

Yeah I agree I know plenty of people who arent leagally blind and paint worse than you do. Very well done I say. The only thing I would suggest is to drill out the gun barrels.

HaLLuCiNaTiOn - the cloaks are lined with deep blue/black.. so.. yeah looks really good against the backdrop.. lol

Nuclear- The guns are all painted.. Boltgun metal overbrushed over black, with gold highlighting. I think it is the angle, combined with the light source that makes it look gray..

To all who suggest drilling the barrels - I don't have a hobby drill, and the DeWalt one I have seems a little unwieldy for barrel drilling.. I do worry that my hands might shake an not have a clean hole.. so I left that step out.

I might ask around locally to find someone who would be willing to give that a shot.. cause I will have this army as well as an Ork force that will need this procedure done.

Looks good, if you want an easy way to make the heads look better along with all the eagle emblems, I highly recommend a pot of the Gryphon Sephia (think thats how the spell it) GW Wash. It would make a big difference providing some quick shading. If drilling the barrels out isnt an option for you can you manage a small black dot instead? it doesn't look quite as good but its better than nothing.

Whatever you do, I give you credit for making the effort despite your vision problems, what you have will be a great tabletop army. One piece of advice that I got when I started painting was to decide on a distance I wanted my models to look good from. For my troops I aim to have them look good if viewed from 12" or so away; closer for unit leaders and characters.

a dot should be within my abilities.. do you think it will matter that I have already clearcoated the figs?

same deal with the sepia wash.. already clearcoated the figs.. will that matter?

I know, with my Orks.. a Devlan Mud wash was astounding and I think, Delemon, you recommended that as well.

Honestly, it looks good on the Orks.. so I am likely to want to try that sepia was as well..

If you're worried about your finished coat, you can always give them a few brushes over with some lacquer thinner before you try inking them. But it shouldn't really make too much of a difference.

The faces, especially, could definetly use a nice ink wash. The armor doesn't really need it (except for perhaps the gold detailing). Otherwise, I like the fact that someone finally had the balls to make some purple SM. You don't find those anywhere.

not worried about the finished coat.. more worried about the ability of the wash to actually stick over the clearcoating.

What I suspect I will do is take one of my "spare" marines and paint them up like this, clear coat it.. and then play with washing.. to see what happens. That way I am not risking one of the members of the Corps..

honestly i think your better off washing a marine that isn't clear coated.

member of the core or not, to much clear coat will hurt them and i'd think that it would get blotchy and not stick well.

OK MM.. that sheet looks really nice.. good try on interpretation too..

Here is how I (90% of the time) run them.. using the 4th ed SM Codex

HQ-

Master - Lightning Claw, MC Combi Plasma Gun, Iron Halo and Artificer armor. - 175

Command Squad - 5 marines with bolters, 1 with Flamer, Apothecary, and Rhino (SB, Smoke, HKM) - 201

Master of Sanctity - Bolt Pistol, Rozarius, Crozius Arcanum, Jump Pack - 121

Elites-

Dread 1 - TL Lascannon, Missile Launcher - 135

Dread 2 - MM, CCW/HF and smoke - 128

Dread 3 - AssCan, CCW/SB and smoke - 108

Terminator Squad 1a - Sarge, 3 SB/PF + AssCan/PF - 220 (Special Heavy Flamer 210) (Special Cyclone 225)

Terminator Squad 1b - Sarge, 3 SB/CF + Asscan/PF - 235 (Special Heavy Flamer 225) (Special Cyclone 240)

Troops-

Tac Squad 3 - Sarge (BP/CS), 8 Bolters, 1 Meltagun, Rhino with SB/HK/smoke - 235

Tac Squad 4 - Vet Sarge (BP/PF), 8 Bolters, 1 Flamer, Rhino with HK/Smoke (no SB) - 249

Tac Squad 5 - Sarge (BP/CS), 8 Bolters, 1 Plasma Gun, Rhino with SB/HK/smoke - 235

Diamond Squad - Scout Sarge (BP/CS), 4 Bolter Scouts, 1 Heavy Bolter - 83

Heart Squad - Scout Sarge (Sniper), 4 Snipers, 1 ML Scout - 126

Spade Squad - Scout Sarge (BP, PF), 5 CCW/BP - 103

Fast Attack -

Assault Squad 7 - Vet Sarge (BP/PS), 7 BP/CS, 2 PP/CS (all Jump Packs) - 270

Assault Squad 8 - Sarge (BP/PF), 7 BP/CS, 2 PP/CS (all Jump Packs) - 280

Land Speeder - Heavy Bolter - 50

Land Speeder Tornado 1 - Heavy Bolter, Assault Cannon - 80

Land Speeder Tornado 2 - Heavy Bolter, Assault Cannon - 80

Land Speeder Typhoon - Heavy Bolter, Typhoon Missile System - 70

Heavy Support -

Devastator Squad 9a - Sarge (Bolter), 1 Bolter, 2 Missile Launchers, 2 Lascannon, Razorback with TL Lascannon - 295

Devastator Squad 9b - Sarge (Bolter), 1 Bolter, 2 Heavy Bolters, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 MM, Razorback with TL Heavy Bolters - 225

so.. depending on options taken, right now it looks like 3700-ish points.

I plan to add 1 Land Raider at this point, and that will be it for 4th ed.

At some point, I will get the 5th ed SM Codex and re-work the points, and decide what else to add.. a unit of Sternguard is definitely on the list, as well as a drop pod or 2..

comments are welcome..

Pork, these are awesome! What I would have suggested has already been covered by the other folks here - dotting or drilling the gun barrels and Gryphonne Sepia or Ogryn Flesh Wash over the heads.

The only thing I could add would be a simple Codex Gray or Boltgun Metal hardline highlight on the speeders, rhinos, and possibly the dreds, but that's a matter of taste and can ruin a great looking paint scheme if done improperly.

As was stated above: clean, simple, and crisp paint jobs always trump messy, detail-ridden work.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
