Warning this are real ultra marines anyone whom is offended by said marines should tuck tail and run! Right now! Quick! I said run!....

Ok enough of that. This was the first army I assembled and played back in the early 90's at the start of third edition. Most of the models you are about to see are ones I assembled/converted/painted 10 years ago and have since collected a lot of dust, battle damage, and in some cases even corrosion! Well here goes nothing. Let me know what you think of my skills back than (I was 13-15).

*Pics coming. Some SQL Error happened last time so reposting them in this thread may take a few minutes.

Please ignore the dot of paint on the front of the models base. Its for quick determination of squad mates in a scrum. More coming giving me time to post em.

I love the old school look and the old vehicles. I run the old tanks myself, although I don't run UM.

Some of your colors seem flat, and a little blue ink or some extreme highlighting might help the blue pop a bit more. Of course, for 10 year old models painted in your early teens, they're quite good.

I like the camo cloaks, they somehow don't clash with the primaries of the rest of the army, which is what usually happens.

@ Krusty:

Yeah I always wanted a marine that had some sever battle damage (after playing for a year seems so short now) but kept fighting anyways and I figured what better a place than in a shooty squad that will probaly be sticking around on the table most of the game. And so after some heavy moding and green stuff I created that little gem.

@ Polonius:

I think its the deep dark angles green base of the cloaks and the fact that when you see the cloaks from the back only the black gloves and boots of the scout show and from the front you don't see much of the camo, so it works really well together. I was thinking about going back and touching up as well as highlighting and shading all the marines. As a kid I always though ( and still sort of do) feel that adding fake highlights generally looks forced and silly. I feel the natural light of the room provides enough shadow, but like I said I was considering doing it to all of them now that I have more experience at doing it since I've started playing fantasy and doing it to all those models.

Ultramarines were my first 40K army, which I started over 10 years ago (and continue to add to). I have quite a few of the same older models that your force features. Many of my first attempts at painting them, I've since touched up and re-done so they stand next to my newer ones and don't look out of place when compared with the techniques I use now. Though looking at yours kinda makes me nostalgic. Regardless, thanks for sharing!

Nice clean job. Not a fan of the old color scheme myself, but you're definately doing it right. Get some decals on those guys and you'll be good to go.

Good clean paint job very competent for an early go.

You could easily whip up some weathering and so on if you wanted -- the vehicles would benefit.

Do you have something against the Dark Eldar? Lol, it looks like a representation of what actually happened to the army.

Classically painted army = Never seen these days. At least where I game. Yeah, sure, every now and again someone starts off a few models with retro colors, but they never last long as intended. I think the red, yellow, and white colors really make an army BANG! and just remind you "it's only a game, have fun!" I think I might paint my Cadian army like that, now that I think about it... though I doubt I will... I like painting camo too much... Though I am painting my Rattlings as if they are wearing street clothes rather than field gear.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

Yeah I used to have decals on them all, as you can see on the speeders, pred, and I think the one termy still have theirs intact. All thothers wore off do to heavy use and me as a youngin not useing some kind of finish on the marines to seal it. So I think after a few years I went and just removed all the decals with a brush and water from the troops because I was tired of reapplying new ones and looking at cracked or half torn ones. Just last night thougth I was thinking of possibly trying my hand at using green stuff to make all the symbols and then glueing those on and painting them up. I like the raised effect on the newer shoulder pads and I think that would add alot to this army's "classic, prim and proper" feel if they had all of their sqaud markings like you said.

Ratbarf wrote: Do you have something against the Dark Eldar? Lol, it looks like a representation of what actually happened to the army.

Actually each of those trophy mods are results of a tournament win back when I was a kid and representing the final opponents paint scheme and army. I have five of them although some are hard to see. There is the speeder one, the singing head one, the pred is running somone over (his arm sticking out from under the tread holding the side rail), the dread stomping over a heretic marine, and the last wasn't based at the time so I didn't include him in these shots.

Kilkrazy wrote: You could easily whip up some weathering and so on if you wanted -- the vehicles would benefit.

Yeah I think I'll try that out now that I have to paint that new drop pod anyways and then maybe give it a go on all the old vehicles.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone.
