I plan for my next army to be either orks or Space Marines. However I was thinking every now and then, when I get bored of painting 20 boyz why not paint a few tau.
Becuase I'll have so few models that will accumulate over a long period I'm planning to paint them as well as I can be bothered - so to start things off heres a model which deserves the least attention just to showcase my colour scheme.

I like the scheme though a drone is a poor test showcase IMO.

Very nice. The grey and blue work well together -- it looks like a piece of equipment rather than a toy. The orange unit markings add a nice touch of brightness. I think the orange could bear to come up a bit brighter -- this may be the lighting, however. Perhaps highlight them slightly?

Have you varnished the model yet? That usually dulls things down a bit.

Well I only discovered varnish like a week ago, so I'll varnish a few practise peaices then move on to this.

I'll probally intensify the highlights. The orange looks really bright from far away, almost as if it is too bright, it's only when you get 20 cm away from it does it distinguish itself.

However I may highlight if varnishing dulls it down too much.

oh yea did anyone notice a green stuffed the other com node insert - gives it a really nice smooth surface.

I agree with Eldramesha. I painted some drones as a test, because I had extras, and I liked how they came out. However, when I applied the colors to a my army, they looked horrible.

I like the colors you chose though. They fit nicely together. I would do one more test when you get some warriors just to make sure.

Just wanted to add your painting is very clean, and crisp. Well done.

Looks good, I think it's just going to depend on how you distribute the colors over your troops. It *should* work though!

I like it. Looks like the two main colours I use in my marine army. Codex Grey and Regal Blue. Though I think I see some Ultramarines Blue as well. What colours did you use?

Nice colors and style. I approve.

You might consider shortening his wire stand however. Making it that high seems kind of superfluous and with how much LOS matters and the specific mention in the rule book about "base they come with" stuff, people might call you on it

I like the color contrast and the black lining really gives it some definition. The only thing that I think it lacks is depth and little shading would go a long way to adding it. Here is an example of what I mean.

I like the original posters colour scheme, although, like many others think it would be sensible to test it on some warriors when you get some. Maybe pick up one from a bitz supplier so as not to break the bank...

As for the scheme posted by ChaosDave, whilst it's technically brilliant painting, I don't like the style of it. It just doesn't seem to work for me.

I don't care for the Piranha. Don't get me wrong, the level of painting skill is top notch and leagues beyond what I can do. My problem is that so much of that blending seems to be done "because I can" and really overloads the fig. It's kind of like a shading effect, but with a dozen different evenly spaced light sources.

Oh you don't have to go as far as that pic. A little bit of shading or even a good wash or 2 would go a long way to adding depth.

Good point, it wont be hard to shorten the wire, I kind of messed up the join at the bottom of the drone anyway.

I must say this is the only paint job I've been pleased with in a long while so I'll make sure it works with my fire warriors.

That piranha looks amazing however such intense lighting makes it seem mettalic, as if it's chrome and I like the more base colours for my armies. However I might jus thicken the highlights a little bit.

Oh yea as for colours.

The Tau armour will consist of a fairly even mix between Ultramarines Blue and Astromican grey.

The Secondry [so clothing] will probally be black.

The sept colour is bright orange - the sept colour doesn't look very good on the blue which means a fire warriors helm and weapon will be Grey, I'll make it work though.

You have very good painting skills, but no-offence I have seen that color scheme for Tau many times before. (@ least where I am)
Maybe I've noticed it more being a Tau player. Maybe another accent color added to your scheme would do it for me.

The colour scheme came to me in a dream after painting my land raider all day, it has ultramarine blue on outside and Astromican grey on inside and I just put the colouy scheme on a practis dron and it looked cool.

So it was original thought.

I like it. The Tau are sort of Star-Trek in their bright, clean color schemes. They are just about the only race in 40K, along with the Tyranids that aren't encrusted with skulls, wings and other religious imagery. Can't wait to see more.
