I will be blogging My Chaos Army starting from scratch here with other random WIP's. I lost my army and all pictures in the California fires, so its a clean slate, and a great time to start painting again!

So I'm getting hardcore back into painting, it settled, went to the local hobby store and picked up $600 of choice items ;] <mostly paints>

So what I'm going for is low light effects with color remaining bright.

So I started with the test on a basic CSM and I didn't like the stock look. So (even though I don't sculpt) I wanted to put bandanas over all my guys faces.. like cowboys sort of lol.

Also cut Abaddon the Despoilers "hair in a spiked scrunchy" off and GS'd his hair down.

so here's what we got so far.

I think that your first painted marine is extremely cool! I really love the paint on the guys face, and it all just goes together very well. And though I have my reserves about abbadon I am anxious to see how he turns out painted

Very nice. I'm liking the bandanas on the faces, but would like to see a brighter shot of one of them (or several). I also like the red. How did you do it?

First HL was (1 prt) Scab Red (4 prt) Water for quick color and see if I was getting the effect I was looking for.. Then (1prt) Red Gore (2 prt) Water. Finally (1 prt) Blood Red (4prt) Water then a Baal Red Wash (make sure it does NOT puddle in recesses)

It is used here to help blend the different reds and make it more vibrant.

For the effect I got you must make all brush strokes toward the bright areas. And with 3 colors you you highlight in 3rd's. Scab Red 3/3 of the highlighted area.. Red Gore 2/3 of the highlighted area.. Blood Red 1/3 of the area..

WASH.. you will use Baal Red starting just outside the lowest part of the highlight and ending just past the brightest highlight. Even though washes aren't really strong if the wash puddles in the dark area YOU will see it.

Quick ref

1:4 Scab Red
1:2 Red Gore
1:4 Blood red
Baal Red WASH

glad you liked the color ;]

thats as bright as it gets.. pictures were taken with a fluorescent light 6" from his head.. i could photoshop the contrast but it defeats the purpose of the "low light" effect...

OK I took pictures again with my Sony DSLR A-300 with flash no more than 9" away from the mini, in my light box.. so it was bright! This just gives you an idea of how dark the dark areas are, but these 2 pix show exactly WHERE I put the red. under normal gaming light, desk light.. the mini is suppose to look like it's in a low light condition.. so I think i did what i wanted to do ;]

Really good work! I like the bandana and the smooth color gradient.

I do have one suggestion--when you paint the bases, try a color that contrasts well with the scheme. I'm thinking light beige. The reason I say this is that is, in my experience, a color scheme like this looks incredible up close but can be a bit low contrast on the table.

Keep it up and post more pics!

totally agree with you Groz about doing the bases tan or codex grey.. im still not finished with the SM above.. i was painting him and got the new mail message about Cruentus wanting to see a brighter pic.. so i snapped it...

when it comes base time, you bet it will be a light color.

Finished the weapons on the SM and he's ready for base work.

Started the Terminator Lord.

Here's some pix of when I started the first base coat and my stopping point for the night.. forgot to take pix in between lol.

Yeah most of the time was spent on the cloak.. once I started it I stayed on it lol.

Great start. You definitely have a good handle on your reds ^_-. And your skin tones are nice as well.

As for the basing suggestion, here are some mock ups of red marines I did for another dakka member a while back:

Grey Bases
Tan Bases

I figure they might help you a bit when you finally get to choosing a basing style.

These are some of the slickest looking chaos marines I have seen in a really long time. I really like the idea you started on with the low light "bright" scheme.

I have one tiny suggestion: when you take photos, either set the white balance to get true white, or process them in Photoshop/GIMP to get rid of the blue tinge, it sort of kills the nice moody reds you have going.

These are going to be really sweet once they are all painted up.

Thanx for the great comments guys! I'll be painting up the metal trim first on the Term Lord today, going to use the mix i used on the SM which was Tin Bitz+ Dwarf Bronze mixed 2:1 then diluted 1:1 with water... used it on his claws and it has a great glow. but it's almost too bright for what i want so I'll be re-painting them. STAY TUNED!

What god to they worship? Khorne would be my guess. Anyways I'd like to see an Obliterator, that would look good with the scheme you selected.

You are correct Thousandth Son. I'll be getting OB's a little later.. just trying to paint what I have now.

While I wont play with some of these in my army, I purchased them to paint, just because.

Terminator Lord
Lord of Change Greater Daemon of Tzeentch
Chaos Daemon Prince
Abaddon the Despoiler
Lucius the Eternal
Khorne Berzerkers x 12
Chaos Knights
Assault on Black Reach.. yes I'm painting everything in the box.

After those I'll be shopping again. ;]

Just received 39 Orkz I have to paint for a customer so I'll be busy the rest of the week, but stay tuned!

And if any have questions about ANY paint that was used on these models feel free to ask.

Really nice job on the armour, the red is very nice; strong colour, well blended.

The skin tones are great too but I cant help thinking they would look nicer being almost white with dark grey/greeny blue shading to contrast with the warmth of the armour and make them pop.

Keep up the good stuff!

Cheers,

Dante

Oh I know! Like an undead.. making the skin pale to make the armor more vibrant. But if I did that it would make my skin shades I plan for Lucius less unique.

I see what you're saying though

Ok, I redid the Terminators claws to look like they are always hot. Glowing in red, orange, yelow, white colors and highlighted the glow onto the lower half.

While the original idea was an antique gold, using a Tin Bitz and gold mix I'm not sure which to go with. SO I NEED YOUR HELP!

I'm liking how the glow makes his face and upper armor really contrast.. and I had fun doing it, and the other reason was when I started doing the rest of the armor pieces with the Antique look the claws were less special. So I'm deciding to keep all the armor trim black with select metal options.. skulls/chaos symbols, etc.

I think its clean and different.

but let me know what you think.

Oh wow, I usually think that glow effects are over done, but in this case it really looks very clean and on a whole army it will be very impressive.

How are you going to do Abaddon's sword and still keep a mainly red glow theme?

Fancy demons?

I was really just playing with the blue, but I plan on a black/red glow for Abaddons daemon sword. Glowie on him too!

ok here's an update.

Had some personal stuff to take care of, and have now come back to finish an Ork order, then I'll be working on my CSM's.

I'll be experimenting with glowing eyes on some mini's using fiber optic's seen in archery sights. If it works like I think you can have glowing eyes without battery, ever. I will show the process as my terminator lord will be getting the upgrade.

But since I'm still working on Orkz, and this is an Ork dominated site, I'll show you a little something.
