well, i'm starting an iron snakes force, and need a hell load of advice, tips etc...

personally, i prefer the modelling side of the hobby, so i will want the force to be fairly close to the descriptions in the novel; brothers of the snake, this project will likely last a while, as more of a side project, so i hope for each individual figure to be converted, any ideas?

below are some early prototype models i did ages ago after reading the book, yes the painting is pretty poor, so they will get a revamp when i find the time

I am midway thru the book also and I admire your inspiration. I may do the same with all the extra marines I have lying around. Then again 5th ed hasn't really inspired me so I can hold off until 6th edition.

It looks like they could use a black or dark grey wash to make the metallics a little less loud. A lot of shiny metal on an entire army can be a bit of an eyesore.

I like your little freehand snake on the shoulder pad. Maybe put one on the loincloth thingy on the sergeant, or a giant one being held by a standard bearer?

The librarian/ grey knight terminator could do without the hood. For the lance you need you can just order them fom gw bitz, as in just the arms. i haven't read the book though. Are they all meant to have some sort of lance thing?

metal looks a bit messy, it needs to look purer, maybe use chain mail or mithril silver highlights.

Ever think about non metal metalics? It takes a bit of practice, but in the end it looks alot cleaner than metalics. Also you ought to thin your paints abit more, it can be trickier with metals but it can be done, it will make it you coats cleaner, with fewer distortions in the coat.

A black wash on the metal followed by a highlight of chainmail will improve your final product will look alot better.

You also ought to work on your white technique. Im not sure how you do it, but it could be thicker and have smoother transitions to the highlights. more layers the better

Also your red looks as though it is only one shade, think about highlighting up to blood red.

yes, as fer the hood, if i take it away ill get a grey knight termie idiot, the snake head adds to the look, whilst doubling up as a psychic hood

Language, language, we're all friends here ... i think...I remember the model properly now, do another picture from the side so that we can see it is a snake head, from the front it looks dodgey. As it is a librarian i reckon that you should 'bring it forward more' so to speak to cover more of the head. It still looks like a GK termie with the hood! I agree with the non metalic idea too.

people people the painting on these marines aint that bad, its actually pritty good, its just the only bad thing is that the silver is a little claggy/dried up

"I salute you! For though our path has been long and bloody, you have served our lord with unflinching courage and the honour of true warriors. We have seen many fall today and must remember, even as we die, that our blood to is welcome..."

Yes the painting is that bad. He is looking for help with modelling as he said that is what he more interested in.

That said the hood on the terminator needs to go, it looks horrible. Removing it would be better than leaving it. Or spend more time on the hood.

I would replace the metalic armor with codex or fortress grey and then lightly drybrush some boltgun on them. Makes them a lot less shiny.

Spears and shields are the big things that make them different from other chapters (even if they mean nothing in rules terms). You can get greek shields and spears from most historical makers. Add a spear to every back and a shield to the arm (just counts as armor, not additional affect) and you have a good start modeling-wise.

More of the tunic-wearing BT bodies would also help.
