You've seen a Dakka Painting Challenge before but now it's time for something a little different. Get ready for a Dakka Mekboy Challenge! The prize for this challenge is a little larger then normally offered for our challenges, and because of that the final winner will be decided by a panel of judges (although the finalists are still determined by a public poll). Thanks go out to Daggermaw, for coming up with the idea for the challenge, as well as putting up some of his own money for the prize.

THE GOAL:
The goal of a Mekboy Challenge is to create the coolest converted miniature you possibly can within the confines of the contest theme and rules (see below for more details on both). In Mekboy Challenges, painting your submission is not required as this contest is focused mainly on the conversion aspect of the hobby. However, be aware that a painted model will almost certainly give you a better chance to win.

THE THEME: 'you GET TO convert DA KOPTA!!!'
Many of us have recently purchased the new 'Attack on Black Reach' Warhammer 40,000 starter, and while the Deff Kopta model included is pretty amazing, any Mek worth his salt knows it could be better with a little kustom love! The challenge is to bring out your inner Mek and convert the plastic Deff Kopta that comes in the starter set to make the coolest looking Kopta you can possibly imagine.

Please note that while there is no set base size for this challenge, the goal of this contest is to convert the Deff Kopta, not to create a multi-model diorama. Ultimately the judging for this contest will take this concept into account, so please make sure that your conversion is focused on the Deff Kopta and not on ancillary models hanging off it.

THE RULES:
  • 1) The submission model must be converted by you. The model you enter cannot be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. Once the voting is over though, feel free to post your model all over the web!

  • 2) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge presented. In this case that means your conversion must be based off of the plastic Deff Kopta found in the 'Assault on Black Reach' Warhammer 40,000 set. The amount of conversion work you put into the model is up to you, but the core of the original Def Kopta must still be recognizable in the final submission.

  • 3) Take a work in progress (WIP) shot of your model (and only one) and send this picture along with your final submission. This WIP image can be taken at any point during the construction of your model, so as long as the model isn't completely finished or still on its original frame, then it counts as a WIP picture.

  • 4) Take another shot of the completed conversion and send it in to mekboychallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before 11:59 pm Central (GMT-6:00) the night of the Deadline!!

  • 5) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorites from the bunch.

  • 6) Voting will last for 4 Days. At the end of the voting, the top five entries with the most votes in the poll are the finalists.

  • 7) From the five finalists, a winner will be selected by a panel of judges. Judges will be selected by the site's administrator (me).

  • 8) Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Mod Entry" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't become finalists or win the prize. But don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough of a reward...

  • THE PHOTO:
Pics of your model may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels. The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them.

If you decide to send more than one final shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.

    THE DEADLINE:
All submissions must be received no later than 11:59pm Central (GMT-6:00) on December 16th.

    THE PRIZE:
The prize for this challenge is a suitable collection of loot for any good Mekboy! It is $60 (USD) in store credit plus free world-wide shipping with one of Dakka's partners, GorillaTactics.org. GorillaTactics regularly offers a pretty substantial discount on the wide variety of gaming products from all the major game companies they stock, so in reality you'll be winning much more than $60 in whatever gaming product(s) you choose!

Many thanks goes out to the sponsors for this challenge, Dakka user Daggermaw and GorillaTactics.org.

If you have any questions regarding this contest, feel free to send an email to mekboychallenge@dakkadakka.com or just post the question in this thread.

    Good luck and happy converting!!!

The goal is to produce a single Kopta model, but yes you can use parts from as many models as you like to create your final product.

    Couple things:

I don't have to paint it, but I can?
There is no way to ensure that paint will not affect voting or judging. Correct? I ask as I don't want to rush the conversion to have time for paint, or just rush last minute paint to help snag votes. IMO, an un-painted (no primer) shot helps best display the actual conversion work, which seems the heart of the challenge. Unless it's more of the all around challenge, convert and paint, in which case wouldn't painting be mandatory?

The final model has to be a kopta, or in the spirit of a kopta? As in, has to be a flying model that would suitably fill the role of "Deff Kopta" in an armylist? So I can't work to convert a kopta into a bike, as then the net result is a bike, not a kopta?

Last, since basing is of newfound importance with the whole "What it comes with" rule, I'm assuming all entires have to be mounted on the large flying base supplied in AoBR?

Just looking for some clarifications. Thanks!

The goal of the challenge is to make a cool converted model. But to get to be one of the five finalists you're going to have to survive a public vote, so assuredly having a painted model will probably help you in that regard. But ultimately I think a cool design is going to get you into the finals whether it is painted or not.

The final model has to be a kopta, or in the spirit of a kopta? As in, has to be a flying model that would suitably fill the role of "Deff Kopta" in an armylist? So I can't work to convert a kopta into a bike, as then the net result is a bike, not a kopta?

As long as looking at the model tells the viewer "this is a deff kopta" (as opposed to, say a warbike or warbuggy) you're on the right track. But really, the choice is up to you. Just know that when it comes to the voting on the five finalists, the criteria is going to be to look for the coolest converted deff kopta.

Last, since basing is of newfound importance with the whole "What it comes with" rule, I'm assuming all entires have to be mounted on the large flying base supplied in AoBR?

Nope. There are no basing requirements.

Squig_herder wrote:Does the kopta have to be list legal, eg, either twin-linked rokkits or twin-linked big shootas, etc or can you mix and match?

It does not necessarily have to be legal for the army list. Just so long as it looks something like a deff kopta.

WaaaaghLord wrote:does then end result actually have to be a dethkopta, or could it be omething merely based on the dethkopta model?

Again, it can be a fairly radical departure from what one might traditionally think of as a deff kopta, but as long as looking at your conversion registers the idea of 'deff kopta', then I think you'll be fine.

Eisenhorn wrote:Is it only Kopta bits only,Or could I add kopta bits to say a rhino body to make a transport kopta.

The plastic deff kopta model has to be your base, but beyond that you can use any and all materials you like to convert it.

So, we have to use a deffkopta for the kunvershun...but has the final model to be a deffkopta as well, or can it be some kind of bike, speeder, flyer etc. ?

Again, the point is for the final conversion to be a 'Deff Kopta', meaning that if someone was to look at you final converted model they would think that it would be a Deff Kopta in an army, as opposed to a warbike or buggy. Of course, the concept of what a Deff Kopta is exactly can vary greatly. You could make something with giant engines instead of helicopter blades, etc. But at the end of the day the model is supposed to represent a Deff Kopta as opposed to a warbike or buggy.

Of course, you are free to enter any model you like, as long as it is based off of the plastic deff kopta model, no matter what it looks like in the end. If its a cool enough conversion you might even get into the final 5 through the public vote, despite the fact that it looks like a warbike, for example.

I'm just letting you know that the judges will be instructed to look for the coolest Deff Kopta model, so if your final model looks more like a bike than a helicopter that may hurt your chances of winning.

But if you really want to make a bike conversion out of the Deff Kopta, you most certainly can still enter your work.
