So since I clearly don't have enough projects to work on, it's time to start a new army! Skinks!!

The goal of this army is to build a fun to play force of around 1000 pts tops, but primarily it's a modeling and painting project. Since the army is getting a new book & models in February, I'm going to building the general troops first to get the bulk of the army out of the way while I wait for the new stuff to get released. The army list will basically be something like ... 1 skink chief (general), 1 skink priest (scroll caddy), 1 stegadon, 1 unit of salamanders, 1 unit of razordons (if they get to be units?), and with whatever points are left over I expect to have about 2 units of skinks with blowpipes and 3 with javelins, around 13-15 models each. Will depend on pts in the new book of course. But in the meantime, I'll be starting 2 boxes worth of skinks, 1 box will be all javelins & shields, the other will be all blowpipes. They will probably take the next month or 2 to finish anyway, so by the time they're done the new stuff will be coming out and I can continue.

As far as modeling goes, I plan to use the Gale Force 9 skirmish movement trays for each unit and try to build each unit kind of as a mini-diorama. Since it's a small army, I don't mind spending a little extra for stuff like that. And in games, pretty much everything will be skirmishers and the trays will make it a whole lot easier to move around especially in the first few turns.

For painting, I plan to have all of the skinks resemble those teeny red poisonous frogs, the "Strawberry Poison Dart Frog". Blood red bodies, with dark blue arms and legs and a few spots and dots here and there, and probably washed with badab black. I may dip them since there will be a lot, or I'll try the army painter washes maybe... and they will probably be glossy so they look wet.

I built 1 little skink last night, he'll be my test model for the color scheme and I'll probably have him painted tonight or tomorrow As far as the other things like salamanders and the stegadon I will paint those in dark greens and browns more like "normal" lizards.

Once again, I'm stuck trying to think of a good name for my new army. The first thing that comes to mind is "The Sleestax"

So that's it so far. Pic of the first guy coming soon

OK here is my first test model

I think I'm happy with the skin, not totally sold on the weapons.. but I didn't want to make them too dark and have them blend into the arms. Maybe they would look better as silvery instead of goldy?

The pics suck, but the colors are actually much brighter. I'll have to mess with my camera settings and lighting I guess. The recipe I used was red gore, badab black wash, blood red drybrush. The blue on the legs was vallejo stormy blue drybrushed heavy at the bottom and light at the top, badab black wash all at once when I did the red part, and then ultramarines blue drybrush for some not-so-bright highlights. The skin on the head fin was orange before I washed it, but it kind of blended in after the black wash and now you can't really tell.

Sounds like a lot of steps but he was actually pretty easy to paint. shouldn't be a big deal to get them all done assembly line style.

Anyway, wadaya think?

If the colors are a little brighter in person you sir have yourself a fine model to paint an army by. This looks damn good. I'm really loving that fading from red to dark blue it looks quite nice. I think the weapons fit as is but if you think they need a little more kick with some silver, go for it. I think, as is, they are going to look great on the table together.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

thanks

they're kind of dark red, but still look better in person. Maybe when I get more done the next pics will look better.

sort of holding off on the bases for now though, till I figure out how to make good jungle bases. I'll probably do all the bases separately and then glue them on top instead of using the slots.

Looks great though I don't know if silver would go good on lizardmen but someone has to try it.

The skins look great. Always found that color scheme neat. I'm sure it'll look really cool across an army of skinks.

I think the weapons look fine as is as well, and agree with FlammingGaunt that silver might not go so well. I suspect silver would contrast a little too much with the dark red/blue you've got going with the skin.

Maybe playing around with the non-metal parts of the weapon could help pop it out more. Perhaps a dark jade-like color?

Love the paint job. I knew what it was supposed to be, or at least what I (correctly) assumed you meant it to be just from the pic without actually reading your whole post, so kudos on that. One of these days I'll get around to painting all my many skinks as well. Maybe their new army book will inspire me to get back into Fantasy.

Thanks

I'm gonna get the first unit of blowpipes done.. I think I'm gonna do em as 11 pipes and 13 javelins and the same with the 2nd box so that should give me 4 units to get done before February so I should have plenty of time. If I happen to run out of stuff to paint I can always get started on some salamanders after

I think I'm gonna try out the Army Painter red primer spray for these guys, that should speed things up a bit.

Great looking skink Necros, love the skin. The weapons are a bit dark looking to me, but who can say if that's the pic or not. I originally was going to complain about how irritating an all skink list is ... but the new book might actually make it interesting, with the razordons and the fact you're taking a steg too. Looking forward to more happy blendy lizards from you, and the new book from GeeDub ...

I like the poison dart frog color scheme.
They look a little dark, but you already mentioned that being the pictures.
The blowguns look fine to me.

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

Got my first 15 skinks painted, the blowpipe unit. I'm about to get started on the bases and the skirmish movement tray. I got some aquarium plants that I'll be mixing bits of in with some grass and a couple of little lizards from the jungle swarms on the skirmish tray just for spice. And a couple of greenstuff mushrooms and other doodads like that. So, here's where I'm at so far

I think it's a GF9 skirmish tray...

Nice looking stuff, Necros! Skinks are just awesome. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the little guys come out.

Yep that's a Gale Force 9 skirmish movement tray

You can get them here

http://www.gf9.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=269

I figured it would make some of the first few movement phases a little easier for me and I just always thought it was a cool idea I'm thinking about maybe even getting some for guants for my tyranids, I can always just take em off the base if they have to run into cover.

16 skinks with javelins just hatched I'm planning to form them into a 6x4 block w/ 2 kroxigors in the middle since they're rumored to be like that in the new army book, so there's some pics with some of my Kroototaurs as placeholders for now. I'll use the new kroxigors once they're released...

Wadaya think?

Well done of course, but I think it would have been cool if you painted each unit to match a different species of dart frog.

I thought about that actually.. but I decided I'dm gonna keep all the regular skinks like this, and then the chiefs and shamans will each be a different kind. Not sure how I will do the kroxigors though.. I want them to fit in with the red & blue guys but I don't know if they'll look right if they're the same colors...

I think these guys look absolutely brilliant! In fact I'm finding it difficult to resist the urge to pop into GW today and pick up a box of skinks myself...

As for the kroxigors, maybe you could try looking at some monitor lizard colours - there might be something there that will fit with the red/blue whilst still looking natural but less amphibious?

Great lizardman army. Very nice theme, the red and blue is great.

One thing though. What the heck are the Kroototaurs? Are their head from the Inquisitor range, or did you make them, or what?

I probably won't have many updates for a while now :( I'll be just building more and more skinks till the new models start coming out so by then I will just need a few more things to finish the army. My goal is to have 1000 pts.. you can fit a lot of the lil buggers in 1000 pts.. got my work cut out for me...

Right now I'm painting the 3rd and final vindicator for my chaos marines. After that I will still have a land raider to finish but I'll save that for another time. Just wanted to break things up a bit so I don't get burned out.
