G'day, peeps. At my gaming club last week, I was reminded once again of the joys of playing Space Hulk. It's a real giggle, but the one drawback is my Terminators don't fit on the board squares. As such, I'm taking this as an excuse to build my own Space Hulk terrain boards based around 40mm squares. Before I start, I'd love to know if any of you guys have any experience or pointers for this kind of project? I'm certainly planning on using lots of fine wire mesh for that cool spaceship floor look.
I'm worried about keeping the boards flat, too - what are the best cost-effective basing materials to use that will prevent warping?
Yes, anyway, I'll use this thread to post images of the project as it happens. The gaming club has a ton of Cities Of Death terrain just sitting in boxes, which is food for thought.

A good way to build the board would be to use 2' x 4' sheets of hardboard and buy several 1" x1" boards. cut the 1" x1"s into lengths to edge the 2x4 hard board. 2 - four foot lengths (these go down the edges of the longside) and then cut 4 22" (24"-@2" from the 1x1" running down the side - it takes up almost an inch. need to measure this because it may not be cut to exactly one inch.) These go down the middle of the board evely spaced one on each end and two in the middle. and then apply wood glue and screw the 1x1 to the hardboard and then screw the 1x1s together (be careful not to overtourqe the screws through the hardboard, snug them down until they are flush - use countersink type screws. you can then base your board wth you wire mesh etc... this will be a pretty sturdy board two of them will be a 4'x4' board. Here in the states the 2x4 hardboard is about $8 bucks at home depot and the 1x1 come in 8ft lenghts for about $3 or $4 bucks... you will need about two lenghts for each 2x4 section. easily portable and easy to store.

I think you may have missed the point, friend, unless I've completely misread your reply. I'm not looking to build a gaming table, but a series of modular terrain pieces to represent the space hulk game tiles, but larger, to accommodate the newer Terminator base sizes. And also, more awesome, because cardboard is no fun.
Like what you see here.

If I was to make such project I would make some moulds with meshes and and then cast several pieces in plaster...( if you feel that plaster is to fragile just do the moulds with some paper clips in the middle.

See the cardboard pieces in the photo? I want to make some of those. But 3D, and big enough to fit 40mm bases.
It upsets me that GW haven't put the rules for Space Hulk online, like all the other Specialist Games. It wouldn't do any harm to sales of their Terminator and Genestealer box sets!

Yupyup! I'd like to get a few more guys playing the game at my club, too. It's an awesome game. Very atmospheric and frantic.
I was thinking about adding a wall on one side of any corridors using CoD pieces, but this might be impractical. I'd kinda hoped someone else around here had tried a similar thing.

Ah, gotcha. I like the idae of mesh wiring for the floors. You could use the CoD pipes to run underneath them.
I haven't played it myself, but I've read about it in the Soace Wolf omnibus, and It sounds awesome.
If you were to build a wall for one side, you might as well do it for the other

I think MDF/Hardboard would be a good starting point for flooring. I'd also recommend using crochet/hook rug type mesh instead of metal mesh, because the metal stuff is $12 per section, the other a mere $2.

HIrst Arts makes 1.5" square Flooring, but I'm not sure they have that size in their Sci-fi space Range. I think I saw pictures of the Space Hulk tiles online somewhere, you could enlarge the photos to make the tiles closer to the correct size, however that still doesn't solve your problem of a medium cooler than cardboard....Making a mold is a good idea...

1. Go here: http://www.plastruct.com/picat/PLAIN_PATTRND_SHTS_9.pdf
2. Buy whatever texture you want (I would go with Diamond Plate)
3. Cut it into appropriately sized squares and attach it to some appropriately sized thin hardboard.
4. Paint it up, you've got your floors! You're on your own for the walls.....

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

@Vandez: GW did put up some pieces online a couple of years back. There was a "combat patrol" or somesuch which used upscaled 40mm grid pieces that you could print out and use. These would probably work as a start. There were a couple of rooms and corridors from memory - I may have them still on my computer somewhere.
Try the Oz GW site for them (it's where everything else still seems to be - including articles for 3rd ed).

you can buy moulds to cast tiles for your corridors/rooms here :
http://www.hirstarts.com/molds/molds4.html
i think the 1,5 " are good for new terminator bases .
i've bought some tiles ( not moulds but casted tiles ) on a ebay store months ago (and i'll build my space hulk soon)
but i forget the link of the shop.

If that is too much, as stated go to BoardGameGeek. There is a powerpoint file containing GW's official Space Hulk Kill Team tiles, which are sized for 40mm bases and do not have the jigsaw edges. I have printed these out, and stuck to 5mm foam core. Game on!
here are two pics from Project Hulk (not my work, sadly )

Sheet styrofoam. Use 40mm squares instead of the 25mm ones.
I would increase the size of your old placard hulk tiles and make them 2X the size of the originals.
Start small, like one basic hallway tile, the square 9 x 9 with 2 doors, then continue with the basic 1 X 5 squares hallway sections
The basic of the basic-
A pad of Butcher board paper under a clear plastic sheet. Maybe plexiglass, or sheet plastic.
A little more advanced-
If you have access to the graph paper, you can do the math and increase the size by ratio of 1 25mm squaer, to 1-40mm square.
then you can use the graph paper as a template, cutting out your paper then placing it over the styrofoam.
After you are finished with the basic design, you can use a pen, some paint, and art paint and other appuratances to give the details to your hulk sections.
I havent done it, yet. But I have the stuff and it is one of those "Meaning to do, but something comes up" things.
And the Advanced Materiel, miniature Space Hulk 3 D tiles-
Another thing you might try is to make the tiles out of balsa wood. they sell it in sheets, you can make the paper templates, then go attatch them to the wood. After the fact, you can add more details, and build up the floor sections with some 40MM squares of wood to represent the metal floor plates.
You can Caviot off of the idea into something along the lines of what they had once had in GW's site. Then you can add a couple of MM's on each side to add the wall and support structure sections. Maybe use some of that plastic I beam materials from HO scale train shops, add textures and placard bits, and plastic and wood to the wall sections, spraypaint the whole matter flat black, and drybrush the results.

Have a quick scout about for the correct size plastic bathroom/ kitchen tiles. You can buy 1ft or larger square sheets of plastic that are molded to look like smaller tiles.
You may be lucky and find them with 40mm "tiles"
or
smaller 1cm "tiles" that could be painted/ detailled to define squares of 4.
It's worth a thought!

My buddy's store (Legions in Pittsburgh, PA) has a fantastic 3D Space Hulk Board. The 40K Radio guys took some pics of it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25791613@N02/3045945498/
The walls are blue foam cores with plywood sections covered with color stickers that an artist made. The floors are cut wood in large squares to accomodate the larger base sizes.
There are more pics in the gallery linked above. It is a great board!

Vandez: You couldn't be more wrong about the skill required. The Hirst Arts molds are REALLY easy to work with. If you can build small models out of Legos, you can cast your own parts with Hirst Arts molds and build the exact same set as they did for Project Hulk, especially since they give all of the details for how they built that set on the website ( http://www.vitruvianzeke.com/ProjectHulk/ProjectHulk.html). Seriously, try one of the simple molds and see for yourself how easy they are to work with.

the Hirst arts spaceship molds are surprisingly easy to work with. this fellow added allot of interesting features, like. But if you leave that part out
its as simple as Lego. my local gaming club has hundreds of pieces made using the Hirst arts molds, even my 5 year old daughter has made a few pieces
I admit the initial purchase of molds is high but considering the use you can get out of them. We have had some of our molds for at least three years now with barely any sign of wear.
and the initial creation of the blocks is a little time intensive but if you get a food dehydrator that you can use it. really speeds up the process.
the uses we have gotten out of these molds are endless. we have given away pre poured kits as tournament prizes and they will be taken over cash or gift certificates every time.
its like Lego or mega blocks just far more awesome. the price isn't so bad if you do it as a club project and everyone chips in. though look for dental plaster locally, 50lbs boxes of plaster are horrible things to pay shipping on
I really really recommend the Hirst Art products to anyone that hasn't seen or worked with them yet

Not all the product lines are compatible with each other, but email them and they are very helpful. You'll also get a discount for bulk order.
