A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

Ok so I've decided that I want to play Warhammer Fantasy as well as 40K. My problem is that I can't seem to decide on an army, you see I would've done Chaos like I normally do but I decided to be different. So what should it be? Dwarfs, Empire, Skaven, Tomb Kings or Dark Elves?

Depends entirely on how you prefer to wage war.

Dwarfs tend to favour a more static style of play, tend to have quite small armies, but are tough as old boots.

Empire are literally a jack of all trades. You name it, they can play it, but never particularly well. Their strength very much lies in Synergy of the list, rather than a single power unit (ignoring of course Steam Tanks, which once down a wound or three quickly become rather useless)

Skaven. A non-painters nightmare I'm afraid. Definitely an army of mass over quality. Some nasty hidden things which can ruin opponents plans. Unless going Shooty Army of Doom, not the easiest list to wield either.

Tomb Kings. If you are starting out, I really don't reccomend Tomb Kings. As a second Fantasy Army, they are great, but the high cost of their compulsories, and the fact you really do need at least two Liche Priests should give Newbs pause for thought. Also one of the armies which very definitely has a 2,000 point minimum (you really, really need that Lord choice!)

Dark Elves. A bit of an oddity. Once you have a handle on what you want to take and how to use it, precious little can stop you. Also an extremely aggressive army, which due to it's inherent fragility (they cannot take what they dish out!) one you need to pick your fights carefully with....

I would say go with Dark Elves or Skaven. Unless you really like the Empire minis. I can't stand them personally, but they are a fun army to play in some ways. Dwarfs can be very boring to play as and against, and I hate Tomb Kings.

dwarfs - cheap to make full army ( skull path set ) they look organized and neat on the battle field.
empire - models need updating ( they look abit old now :x )
skaven - many many things to glue D: ( mass blocks of slaves ) can get expensive. i would say fur should be easy to paint... if the cast / sculpts arnt so blurry...
tomb kings - similar to skaven , rule book abit dated , way easier to paint atleast ( decent plastic though )
dark elves - freshly updated rules / minis this year. incredible looking plastics ( corsair / cold one knights yummy! )

i dunno! which army do you find the best looking visually?

What do you play in 40k?

You'd probably want an army with a somewhat different play style.

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

When I first started back into warhammer around easter I bought a lot of orcs and gobbos. Got burned in an online trade to the sum of 60 quid and it made me quite a sad panda and put me off collecting them- that and I painted 2k of plague marines (no more green!). having said that I found they were immensley fun the couple of games I did play- the randomness really appeals to my nature

So I opted for Tomb Kings instead. I read all the forums I could about them and figured ah sure it will be grand. Half a dozen battles with them at 1k points and well...im regretting them. Easy enough to paint but they really are a specialist army- one mistake (and yes I make plenty) and your army is collapsing or being annhilated in combat

So yeh the point of all this:

Dont do a horde army first time round, its just to daunting to have to build and paint them all. 200 clan rats or whatever?

You need a solid army which is forgiving, interesting to paint and above all has a background which appeals (I always loved skaven but once again horde :S)

So in my humble opinion go for DE, Empire or Dwarves. Perhaps someone with more experience can offer more advice.

dwarf wins then!

seriousely the deals on skull pass is such a nice opportunity to use
especially you already like how they look.

that and ALOT of dakka members probably have tons of them unused and
willing to trade / sell them.

i love my dwarves.
the reason you see folk saying that they are boring to play with and against is because of their movement. they are slow as anything and this tends to sort of make you gunline them all the time. they don't have any real fast troops. if they would update them id probably switch to chaos dwarves simply because they have cavalry.
overall though dwarves have solid infantry and solid leadership combined with some great ranged firepower which can only = win

I'd go for an aggressive Dark Elves army with lots of scary units (Dark Cold Knights, Heavy Beasts).
