Subject: First Space Marine for a long time, any comments?

Human Auxiliary to the Empire

Okay, after visiting the forums almost daily I've finally built up enough courage to post something on Dakka. This has taken me ages due to:
a) I need ages to paint anything at the moment (tight scedule)
b) I am usually totally intimidated by the quality of the posts here.
Anyway, I'd be glad for some comments on the color scheme for my as yet unnamed chapter, and any tips for improving the paint job.

Red/orange look good together, and is suitable for a marine chapter. The blue helmet, going by convention, would identify this marine as a member of a devastator squad. I would suggest orange or red in the helmet, probably the former as model might look top heavy otherwise, but take off the helm and use it for a devestator model.
I'd say nice work. Good attention to detail. Nice lining. If it's inked, I can't tell. Good detail on the base and weapon in particular. Better than most.

I was thinking along the lines of blue helmets for normal marines, white (or white stripe) for veterans. Squad marking on right shoulder pad (obviously not visible here).

The marine looks great, the highlighting is ace. I like how you did the plasma gun, it was nice to see a difference in the coils from the popular blue or green.

Keep the blue helmet! I really love the constrast, much better then the conventional and rather boring scheme of a moderately bright color accented by black, silver, or white. The way I see it, just because the imperial boyscout handbook says certain colors are reserved for elites and such, doesn't mean you have to actually have to do that. That's just me though.
Also a nod to the basing. Its the same as mine!

Yeah, thats how I paint my plasma guns as well. I always thought of the coils as well, a heatsink, and heatsinks dont normally glow strange colours...

First off, the model looks very good. Your technique is basically good, so nothing to be concerned over.
Marines are inherently heraldic in color, so you might do better with a deeper red and a yellower orange, more of a crimson vs. yellow scheme for more contrast?

The blue helmet looks good on the model.
Only Blood Angels use blue helmets to signify devastators, no one else does, so don't be worried about it for your own chapter.

thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'll stick to the blue helmets, IMO the blue is a nice constrast to the red and orange. By the way, here's marine No. 2, complete with "victim". I had a lot of fun converting this.

I like the color scheme. I need to show it to my wife she says red & orange do not go together. This should prove her wrong. My only comment is I think you need some shading or some way to more define joints in the legs & knees. hope that helps.
