Hi there!
I've been playing 40k for the past number of years, and now, with a 2500pts Dark Angels army under my belt I'm looking to start an army of Crimson Fists. I'm not sure what paints to use though. I know Midnight Blue is advised, but could I use Regal Blue on a Black undercoat, and not have them looking like Ultramarines?
Also, on an unrelated note, what advice would you give for painting banners/purity seals/scrolls etc?
Thanks in advance!
Aonghus

Necron Abyss or Regal Blue mixed with Black will give a dark enough basecoat for CFists

im using necron abyss on mine, just the base paint with a little water in it. it comes out pretty good. Not quite as nice as the old midnight blue colour, but pretty good.

I tried painting Ultras, but they turned out more like Crimson Fists, so that's what they'll end up being. I used Mordian Blue followed with Regal Blue, then washed with Asurmen Blue, highlighted with Enchanted, with the final hard-edge in Spacewolf with a drop of Enchanted for a better tonal match. It's deeper than classic or new Ultras and isn't as dark as the Necron Abyss.

As far as purity seals go, I base mine with Mecharite Red and Deneb Stone, wash with Baal Red and Gryphonne Sienna, then highlight with Blood Red and Bleached bone.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

My preferred & convoluted way of painting up my Crimson Fists is as follows;

Main colour;

Necron Abyss basecoat.
Dry brush Regal Blue.
Dry Brush Ultramarine blue
Blue ink wash (I have a VERY old pot of Turquoise glaze, but Asurmen Blue wash should suffice).
Second very light drybrush of Ultramarine blue.
Highlight with Enchanted blue.

Fist colour;

White undercoat.
Blood red second coat.
Wash with Ogryn Flesh ink.

Details to suit your taste.

I'm at work now but will post pics later.

If it's stupid & it works, it's not stupid.

I did a coat of Chaos Black, a coat of regal blue, and then a coat of 50% Ultra Blue and 50% Regal Blue. The black undercoat keeps the blue dark. I'll post a picture in a minute.

The flash brightened the blue slightly.

Just a wee example of my own personal technique for the boys in blue & red, but your mileage may vary.

Did you ink wash the whole model or just the highlight areas?

I ink wash the whole model.

Basic ink wash of Turquoise glaze / Asurmen Blu over all blue areas. I don't thin this wash with water, going for a deep blue effect.

The Ogryn Flesh wash is also undiluted, but I like to put on a few layers to give a deeper red.

The only other ink I use would be a 50/50 thin wash of black ink & water over the boltgun metal areas, such as cabling, weapon barrells etc.
