Hello all

Had a play around at making some barbed wire fences.

Really simple and cheap to make, using:

  • Galvanised garden wire wrapped around a large hobby knife and pulled open to make the loops

  • Wire from aluminium screening (tough fly wire) to wrap around the wire to make the barbs

  • Plastic card for the base

  • Balsa for the posts

  • Tissue (soaked in superglue as scraps of material attached to the fence)

  • Superglue

  • PVA glue

  • Sand

  • Static grass

Nice result there, tallmantim. Liking the scraps caught on the wire, gives the feeling the wire's actually been in place for a while.

    One suggestion, if I may.

Bend the ends of the wire down to the ground or tether them to something, they look a little odd just sticking up, but that's just my opinion.

Just a small point, and doesn't really spoil the result.

Started making some new scenery to play with. So far, I have only built buildings/ruins so started to think about some woods and barbed wire.

After some thought about how to do woods, I came across these conifer twigs/leaves:

So got busy making some woods with foam board and a hot glue gun:

    Which ended up here:

Will post updates once I have the woods further along (black spraypaint is now drying!)

Additionally, tried making a stone wall with stone chips and hot glue:

I'll see how it comes out painted up.

    Hi Ray

The issue would be to make it slightly harder to wrap the barbs on - it's easier on a straight length.

Would be a good option if you had a used spirax notebook around - however I never end up finishing them!

The wire was only $2 for about 10 metres, so it's cheap and plentiful and making the spirals is a 20 second job.

    Cheers

For barbed wire fences, I find cut up bits of sprue can work wonderfully. I just cut out equal lengths, shave all the extras off, and glue them together in groups of 3, making them form an "x"

the balsa wood looks good, I'm just saying this is one alternative.

Tallmantim I think you should stick more of those conifer twigs onto one base.

How are you planning to paint them, and aren't the just going to rot away.

I know why you have done the trees like this (ease of model placement) but I think you should make a
small removable clump of trees to put in the centre of each wood just to make them a little denser.

I wanted to do something similar with pinecones as cactus/alien plants jus never got round to it!!!

    Looking good so far.

Hi - finished painting the forest.

Quite happy with the way it worked out.

The shape works well for play - looks like a forested area with plenty of room to move figures around.

    Oh well...

small removable clump of trees to put in the centre of each wood just to make them a little denser.

I might go back and make some thinner bases (carboard or plasticard) with trees to fill in the centre areas - see how I go.

How are you planning to paint them, and aren't the just going to rot away.

They are dried out, so should not rot, although they are a little fragile for storage. I went for a traditional sort of tree look.

I wanted to do something similar with pinecones as cactus/alien plants jus never got round to it!!!

That would be cool too - I thought about pulling appart pine cones and hot gluing it back together so it does have the obvious "painted pinecone" look but still has good organic shapes.

These are really awesome, but I think you should consider writing up an Article so that it doesn't ever get lost.

Thanks - might get around to it.

Here are the thick walls my son has just made from stone chips and a hot glue gun...

I think they work well - better than the single thickness wall that I tried out.

    Hi,

Going through and trying out a way to make trees.

The frame is made out of a coat hanger, gal gardening wire, a foam card offcut base and hot glue. The gal wire is used to create bulk, smaller branches and also provide more texture to stick the putty to.

Have then smeared multi purpose filler over the frame and end up here:

    ready for painting!

Hopefully it will dry hard for use tomorrow.

    Cheers
