Hi guys, I've been working hard on my Vostroyan re-paint in prep for the new codex. As a distraction from painting rifleman after rifleman, I wanted to get a unit of ogryn painted.

Well, I put snow on all my bases, so the models will be depicted in really cold environments...

I understand how Ogryn regiments are raised, and how they are almost exclusively broken up into detachments and shipped off to different warzones.

Couple things. It seems like they tend to be led around by a commissar a lot in the fluff/apocalypse rules. Would that be their direct CO, an assigned commissar?

Also, would ogryn be issued any cold weather clothing/gear in your opinion?

Would that gear match their homeworld in style? Would they be supplied any gear by their host regiment? (gold armor, fur hats from the vostroyans) in your opinion?

When would they be issued their ripper guns? In transit to a warzone by the depatmento munitorum?

thank for sharing your ideas...

Well because of there dumb nature I'm not sure if cold is even a factor for them, maybe they're to stupid to feel the cold or otherwise I think the Imperium doesn't give a %@#% about there welfare so maybe they wouldn't even care to give them any equipment other then a gun and basic rations.

Vostroyans seem very family orientated and the ogryns would have no family to care for them, so I would say there is no need to model new kit.
However I would love to vostroyan armour ogryns so don't let this hold you back.

That image has been dancing around in my head for a while now. That would be so cool if I had the sculpting skill to do a fur lined hooded parka for each of them.

@DDRE I'm inclined to agree with you from a fluff standpoint, but it is possible that their may be some kinda cold ogryn planet, where they would already have the winter gear before being conscripted.

The Imperium would care about the welfare of Ogryns when they become useless due to frostbite and exposure.
Feeding a 1/2 ton near-down-syndrome giant in a warzone would be expensive.
So would training one enough to function in a military unit, even if it was to be baby sat by a commissar.

I see them wearing heavy quilted rip-stop, with a leather over-layer.
and mittens, with the string connecting them through the sleeves.

mittens are scary when plated in steel
so are steel cover valenkis

Yea im pretty sure the Imperium would care greatly about keeping those things alive and well. Any half brained Commander would know that a healthy Ogryn is worth his weight in gold on the battle field. Just letting them freeze to death would be completely stupid IMO. So yea model some of them up in a more arctic looking uniform. Just cause they are big and dumb doesnt mean they dont feel cold.

Ogryns have mutated over time in their oft overtly hazardous environment.
I would use the standard Ogryn model and green stuff patches of hair (or fur) on them. Make them Ogre-yeti

Well, this has nothing to do with how to convert Ogryns, but after the hair comment I got the image of huge bears with guns mounted on their backs ridden by Vostroyans.

Could be possible

Actually it seemed to me that the poster was looking for options for Vostroyan Ogryns. He specified cold weather clothing and wargear... I was opening up the idea to take it a step further.

Seems to me if you are going to put cold weather gear on an ogryn that would take some level of conversions... just sayin.

But a Manbearpig with a gun would totally rock

Well...considering that Ogryns are the 40k offshoot of Warhammer Ogres, I don't think they'd need any extra clothing for cold environments.

An Ogre's temperature is regulated by their massive multi-chambered heart, so while they don't need to clothe themselves in cold weather (Warhammer Ogres are all bare-chested, and they live in the coldest regions of the Warhammer world), they need to eat lots and lots of food in order to keep themselves going. They're more resilient than any other humanoid race, but they basically eat their weight in food every day, as if they didn't they'd probably freeze to death. Another nice little perk from eating all that food is that they have a lot of extra body weight keeping them warm.

Since Ogryns are basically Ogres with guns, I'd assume they'd have the same (or at least similar) body structure.

It would be a nice conversion though to equip a bunch of Ogryns with greacoats/longcoats, Belphegor had the idea quite spot on. AMB I doubt a commander could buy 5 tonnes of food a day for his Ogryn and give them an hour and a half to let them eat, besides it'd look more fitting in a Vostroyan army to see them dressed similarly.

And whatever you do, don't give them hoods.

If you don't feed them as much as they need, getting cold won't become so much of a problem as the Ogres getting weak would be. You need a lot of energy to sustain something that massive. I don't think a commander would really bother with bringing food along, though, because Ogres have a nasty habit of eating on the job. Assuming they kill something that day, then hey, that's lunch. Need to shoot a soldier to keep the others in line? That's a nice dinner. I don't think they'll mind the carapace armor, as an Ogre can digest metal.

Although I do agree that doing some modeling to the Ogryns will help them fit in better with Vostroyans, from a fluff standpoint, it isn't really necessary.

Maybe modelling them Kislev style would be a nice compromise, they wouldn't be wearing heavy winter gear, but at least they'd be themed similarly.

(edit) yes, I know these aren't ogres.

Wow, great stuff guys!

Things that I had considered that you all have mentioned...

the bears. It looks like you can't buy any kislevites on the GW site, I was contemplating buying some Ursus character models and making the gunbears. Still might if some other avenue of bear acquisition appears.

Hairy ogryns - that one almost won out. I think that totally fits in with fluff plausibility. Would be a snap to sculpt.

the kislevite link was good too. Had i chosen to use the ogre bull set, then draping some furs or making fur vests would fit just right. And that's still a possibility. Mongolia not too far from russia, if they had a siberian feel. Even better.

I've decided to try my hand at sculpting bomber jackets for them. Top Gun style. Last night I got the two halves of the back and two sleeves done, Tonight I'm hoping to finish it. I'll come back here and put a link to my project log if you guys wanna see it. Still a pretty good chance it'll suck, and if it does these ideas you guys gave me are awesome! thanks.

I would definetly vote for using the Ogre Bull set. They look soooo much better than the IG Ogryns do (which probably haven't been updated since the mid-1990's). There's a tutorial on the GW website entitled 'From Ogre to Ogryn' that might help you a bit in showing you how to bring an Ogre Bull into the 41st century. I'll see if I can find it.

Am I the only person that thinks that the old GW Ogres are the worst models ever?

Ogryns were actually updated recently, I think it was for apocalypse because there was a datasheet for them...

anyway, here they are:

They don't look half bad. Still kind of silly, but hey, at least it's a step in the right direction.

Managed to finish a test sculpt of the cold weather jacket...

How about some fluff for this guy. I think it could be fun to do some top gun riffs with him, maybe these guys think they are something they are not...

Any ideas on how he got the jacket?

How intelligent are ogryns anyway? They don't understand irony do they? Are they just really dumb humans? Less intelligent than that?

Looks good...

Ogryns aren't too bright so I'm pretty sure irony would be lost on them.

The winged skull zipperhead made me laugh.

Very nice work.

As for fluff, I have no idea how you would find a jacket that big. That's like 9XL. Ah well, custom tailored.

Ogryns are very dumb. Their IQ is probably somewhere around 30. Worse linguistic skills than an Ork, and they're completely illiterate. So I seriously doubt they would be able to comprehend any sort of irony.

That is some awesome greenstuffing. One thing. His left sleeve is missing a cusp. I only bring this up because I see one on the other arm.
