Nearly a year ago, DiabloBats posted his pretty brilliant tutorial on using Tau torsos and legs with IG pieces to create some great-looking Elysians. I've actually been a little surprised that I haven't seen more folks using this method - I've been meaning to get around to it for awhile now, and finally have. Mind you, I don't have the Elysian parts that DiabloBats had - the lasguns and heads - so I'm trying to find my own substitutes. In my first test model, I used a standard Cadian lasgun and found that it looked pretty good. I'm pretty happy with how the model turned out and think that making more will be fun - I'm just not sure what to use for the head. I've collected up a batch of Sentinel Driver heads that I thought would make good substitutes with a little modification, but I wanted to compare them to a couple other heads. I originally also collected a bunch of SM bare heads with respirators to use, but those are way to big, so I've eliminated those outright. I'd like to get some feedback from the Dakka Community as to which heads look best on the model.

So, first off is the modified Sentinel Driver head. I trimmed off the antenna from the right side and trimmed down the earphone from the left. I also cut into the guy's chin as I feel like the existing model has none.





Next is the Cadian head. Many of you have heard me complain again and again and again of how bad I think the Cadian heads are. But when I popped one of these on the model the other night, I realized it didn't look too bad...maybe it's the helmet combined with the shoulder pads that really bother me...





Finally is a Catachan head I had lying around. I don't think I'd want to equip an entire unit with bare Catachan heads, but I thought it looks good enough to sprinkle into the squad.





So, what are folks thoughts on these?

I really like the cadian head on there, it seems to fit better, IMO tho the catachan looks weird. Not sure if its just too big or what but it definitely looks off. I also Like the tau legs on there. Its very simple but makes the mini look completely new

Yeah, it's pretty funny how a different weapon, a new set of boots, and a different head can completely change the context of a model.

Sentinel head doesn't look like a bobblehead, unlike the other two.

I would use Pig Iron Heads for them. They would look awesome as 'counts-as' Drop troopers.

Which Pig Iron heads are you talking about? The Kolony Militia or the Heavy Infantry heads?

I tried my West Wind SOTR British and German helmets (which the German helmets look pretty similar to the Kolony Militia ones) on the test model and while the size was right, the look was way off. The German helmet (and I think the Kolony Militia helmet) looks too old-fashioned for the modern/futuristic look of the body.

The Heavy Infantry heads could possibly work, though. Although from what I've seen of them on Cadian bodies, they suffer from bobblehead syndrome, too.

The Sentinel head looks best, IMO, tho getting even a squad's worth of those will be more expensive than just getting FW elysian heads. The PI heavy infantry heads could work, although they don't look very 40k-ish.

Another vote for Pig Iron heavy infantry heads. Either the standard or the one with the full face visor IMO...

Actually, through a number of deals, I've already picked up 15 of the Sentinel Driver heads. I'm planning on using these guys either for Drop Troop Hardened Vets (5-man squads w/ 3x Meltas) or for Drop Troop Command Squads (5-man Squads w/ 4x Meltas or 4x Plasma). So, at 5 men per squad, I can get 3 full squads, or mixing with bare heads from Cadian Sgts, Catachans, and Empire, I should be able to get 5 or more HVet and Command Squads out of them.
