My one friend painted one of my orks and wanted to know what you people honestly thought about it. He said feel free to make comments.

I say:

Your photo-fu is weak, and needs improvement.

Other than that, I would splash a black wash on the metal bits and maybe the pants for some shading and to take the metal shine down off those parts.

Otherwise, not too bad!

Yah, I need a way better camera. It wouldn't freaking focus on the back no matter what I did.

not bad! get a watered down black wash onto the metal and you might want to think about doing something with the skin. If you want an ork which looks like hes just ran a marathon, then go for a dark angels wash. For my orks, I used to use ork flesh wash but unfortunatly, Citadel dosn't make it anymore. :(

You need something behind the whole Ork keeping the camera from focusing on something else. Even just a sheet of white paper standing there would work.

its a good start
few things to remember though:
Black wash is a godsend on metallics.
Plain white printer paper helps the camera focus on the models .
when doing blood effects on chainsaws remember to have blood ALL along the blade, otherwise it looks like the ork is using it turned off

oh and finally the bleached bone parts on the clothing look very thin, i would suggest going over them with another layer.

Is that a first try?
If it is then it's a decent attempt, better than my first try.
If not then it would still work for a horde army, it just needs a few washes.

really its not bad. Ive played against armies from people that SWORE they were just the best painters out there and it looked like my 4y/o painted them. so as far as that goes, its really a decent paint job. personally tho I cant stand the "gore" on the weapons. I dont mind so much if its dry brushed a bit to look like its chopped a few heads in its day, but with drybrushing youd still see metal under it. BUT thats just my taste. tell your.....friend... to keep it up and soon he'll be pretty good at it

I think he's been painting more frequently recently. He started the hobby like a year ago but he's been painting on and off. I think he's painted like around 8 minis so far, not including some of the other game sytems he does. He wants me to put up a kommando he painted as well. I’ll be putting that up soon. He spent a bit more time on it because of the details those things have. I'll make sure to use that handy new camera trick

Yeah, I agree that if he's just getting started that this is a good effort. Badab Black/black washes mentioned above will help a lot, and I second the additional applications of bleached bone to the clothy bits, but he might also want to hit those with a devlan mud or gryphonne sepia wash as well.

Just my opinion, but blood effects can make a great model look like a 4-year old got hold of the red paint. I'd avoid them until he gets more practice. Of course, you can't get practice unless you do it...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Probably repeating many others but...

Black wash and after, some dry brushing (gentle and subtle) to highlight a bit. As they are, they're game worthy (or table top worthy). Of course the base is bare. If it's a first go they're not too bad at all and I echo KingCracker's earlier comments regarding that.

Don't like all the brown, but paint wise it's awesome. Also the axe Does not look that good, and if I were you i would make it look a little more 'random' because it looks too right.

I was wondering what suggestions you have and also what feedback you could give on some boyz (the very first) that I painted. I don't know what I could do better on them because I don't know anyone else who paints boyz or has any to give suggestions and stuff. Feel free to say your thoughts. Hope the pictures are better this time. Oh yah, and I think I'll pop the killcan in too. It was supposed to have an ork skull hand painted (supposedly) by orks. I think I got a little sloppy with it even for orks.

Try using a flesh wash on the blades, along with a red ink it will appear to have a caked on blood look.

So these are actually yours? Why bother with the facade of saying they were your friends then?

I just decided to pop mine in while I was at it instead of opening up a whole new thread.

yours... your friends... who cares. Your off to a good start anyway. The paint is looking a lil bit thick. Get your brush wet, and then stick it into the paint. thatll thin it down and make for better looking coverage. Also either invest in some darker washes to make the skin on the orks have depth, OR buy a couple different shades of Orky looking skin tones, and teach your self on the arts of drybrushing. Start off with the darkest skin tone first and completely cover the skin parts with it. then get the next shade up, dry brush somewhat heavy on there, making sure to leave the recesses in the dark tone. FINALLY lightly dry brush the lighter skin tone on top, that will make your skins look super awesome.
OR just wash it lol. try both and see what you like better. ALSO for the "hand painted" icon, next time literally draw it on in pencil, even if you do this crudely youll get a much better idea of where and how to paint. I think your icon started off good enough but you got a bit crazy with how much paint you had on the brush. and a little tip for super small detail, (like eyes and such) get some wooden toothpicks and shave the ends down to sharp tips, and then use those for the detail, much easier then using paint brushes

That's a great idea! I couldn't find brushes anywhere for the kind of detail you would get for that. It always ends up waay too big. I think I'm gonna try to repaint the skull and hope into doesn't get clumpy.

My bro made this and I thought it was really cool, so here it is. He cut the Styrofoam base with a heated up wire with a current of electricity running through it, works real great. Then he used a match I beleive, to melt the craters on one of the sides that you see. Those things supporting the deck I beleive once belonged to some hardrives we blew up. I'm not sure what that turbine thing is though. Just looks neat and orky. He might pop on one of my ork's banners after he paints it and maybe ads some rubble and rocks and stuff to touch it up.

We're thinking about making the outpost into a barracks for the orks (cuz they're the most fun to make terrain for ;D) here are the rough plans for it. Maybe we'll make an individual one instead.
