Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

This will be a chronicling of my Tournement season. I didnt know if it should go into Blog, List, Tactics or where...so I'll just stick it in DD instead and let a MOD decide if its that big of a deal.

I plan on taking Grey Knights all season long this year and seeing if I can score high enough to make it into the invitational NEXT year (my expectations arent that high )

Here is the list:

My Tournement Grey Knights 2009

HQ

Grey Knight GrandMaster-Nemesis, Psycannon, Psychic Hood, Sacred Incense
w/retinue-3 Grey Knight Terminators, 1xPsycannon

TROOPS

(8)PAGK-2xPsycannon, Justicar w/Targetter, Psycannon Bolts, Auspex

(6)PAGK- Justicar w/Targetter, Psycannon Bolts
(6)PAGK- Justicar w/Targetter, Psycannon Bolts
(5)Inquisitorial Stormtroopers

HEAVY SUPPORT

Land Raider w/Dozer Blade, Smoke
Land Raider w/Dozer Blade, Smoke
Land Raider w/Smoke

=1850

Basically this is a gunline, but a mobile one. I dont consider Grey Knights assault troopers but they've got talents in assault that works out better for them if they soften up their enemies with scads of bolter and psycannon fire first.

Basically, I'll want to power one side of the board (giving the shrouding more of a chance to work). Measure distances with the many targetters and long range anti-personel shots with psycannon will be fired normally at ranges of 32-36" giving the shrouding a better than average chance of protecting the firing unit. Landraiders also maintain extreme distances so that only lascannon and rail gun shots have any real chance of hurting them. (landraiders are extremely hard to kill at ranges over 36") They are the anti-armour of the army, once any armour is silenced they help out with anti-infantry. They also provide mobile bunkers for the Grey Knights when things get close and messy. Stormtroopers remain in reserves for a late game objective grab within my own deployment zone, which is their only mission. If they never fire a shot during the entire tournement they will have still done their job.

I have a RTT on the 15th of next month. I hope to be fully painted by then and will have a "not so dry" run of these guys. I'll photo the tournement and give an update here. I'll also be adding more pics as I complete paint jobs. I might start a Land Raider this weekend.

I also have to say, I've almost shamelessly copied other peoples armylists to a certain extent, specifically Aidoneos off of Bolter and Chainsword. My thanx to him for illustrating in Batreps how useful a 50pt squad of guardsmen can be.

looks pretty good, ive been tempted with greys before
just a question though, how does the front ramp on the raiders open?

Looks like a good list to me. Y'know, for a Grey Knight army. Good luck!

Good luck with that.

I may just drag mine out and do the same thing (except I'll do it for my club's league and a tourney) - I stopped doing more than a couple of tourneys a year many years ago (can't guarantee I'll have the time for them).

I stopped painting my Grey Knights because drybrushing the gold got tedious
after a while and getting enough Psycannons annoyed me with their retail price.

I'll get back on that someday.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Since you have some Stormtroopers in there, you should add a bit more Demonhunters to your army.

I would add an Inquisitor with some Mystics and a Null Rod and they should do wonders for you.

I would love to play Grey Knights too, but the only way they can add any Lascannons are with Land Raiders, and I did not want to go in that direction (Dreadnoughts do not have the durability when you put all your anti-tank in a few models).

Yeah there's a question - why a single small squad of Stormies in an army of GKs? They're not there to get past the mandatory Troops requirements (as you've got 4 Troops Choices), so what are they there for other than to score?

They're only there to secure a home objective if needed.
The opponent will more than likely be trying to take out the GK first, and will no doubt be mostly ignoring the STs.

Exactly.

I was at first really loathe to include them. After much soul searching I decided to raid my sisters army and bring them anyway.

Grey Knights are handicapped enough. A single unit of gretch....er, stormtroopers guarding an objective behind a tall wall near my board edge is a slight deviation from "PURE" Grey Knights, but at the cost of giving up some wargear (a simple 50pts) I can grab an objective and have the rest of my army maneuver and kill. Several times I've wished that my Knightly units could maneuver away from objectives...now I wont have to worry so much.

An Inquisitor with the Null rod might be a great Idea, but he's not so simple to come up with points for. The IST's can come along and all I had to give up was a little wargear.

The Stormtroopers are representatives of the Inquisitor who requested the Grey Knight detachment. They act as independant overseers in the Grey Knight detachment, reporting their actions and successes back to their master. Their standing orders are to not get in the way, and only fight if they feel threatened.

There's ya fluff justification right there.

Forgot to add this, for those that have already asked for it elsewhere.

This is how I play my Grey Knights, its a little dated (written toward the tail end of 4e) but much of it is still valid.

Good luck. I like this approach. Take something you want and try to make it work.

As an aside, you may want to try out Citadel Washes. It may help detail those models which could garner you more points for army appearance.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

You should give all your Justicars meltabombs for needed anti-tank. Most importantly you can use meltabombs against walkers which have been stunned and/or immobilised in combat and it will be your WS vs. there WS to hit. Very nice.

Not so good at taking pics yet.

Actually, the models ARE washed with a watered down enchanted blue over Chainmail....highlighted/drybrushed with a mix of mithril and chain once again.

The flash made them look MUCH brighter than what they actually look like.

I'm still learning how to take good shots, not long ago I didnt even think I could take a close up detailed pic. By the time I'm done painting and posting pics I should be an expert. I actually love this gallery stuff....

Don't think I've EVER gotten in HtH combat with a walker. I know what they can do to me in HtH so that will NEVER happen. They'll get lascannoned to death long before they get within charge range....even when using a drop pod.

They would have to drop pod spam me with dreads before a dread would hit hand to hand...and if there is a danger of that happening...I'm boarding the LR's and starting the game in reserves.

I wont be fighting any Dreads in CC. Don't worry.

It's not about wanting to fight the dreads in HtH, but about needing to fight them in HtH. Immoblised dreads or Soul Grinders can present a problem as they contest objectives or table quarters. The LR Lascannons might be preoccupied or disabled and the ability to send in a meltabomb that hit's on 3's can be a resource in the late game

I'll be keeping my eye on this thread. I have been playing my black templars in a very similar way and it works. With GK's it you have a slightly better advantage with Assault 2 guns on each guy.

i found myself in a local tourney with my GK list @ 1850 points. I cam in second of 16 players. I was very surprised at the outcome but i have to admit having the inquisitor with mystics made a huge difference in my game. Although i must admit i was playing gimped i had like 60 points of gear meant for chaos and i didnt fight one single chaos army in 3 games. So i placed second with 1790 points against 1850 lists.. not a bad bragging point.

Here is my list so you can see what worked for me.

I dont see a NEED to charge anything that can pound my 25pt troopers with str10 power weapons just so I can bank on a Meltabomb hit.

This list isnt that aggressive, its much more "stick and move". There are some things that it just doesnt do, if it fails at lascannoning the dreads....well, charging into CC with them is no answer...it's making another mistake or digging the hole deeper.
