So, I get to the Broadside Bash, and I was surprised that I did not recognize many people. There was only a handful who I knew. I guess I have been away from LA to long.

Hulksmash was one of the only participants to post his army online. I asked him if he changed it from what he posted and he said that he didn’t.

Mission: Seize Ground with an automatic 5 objectives
Deployment: Spearhead

Table and Objectives

This is how the objectives were scattered.

Set up

Nothing fancy, just 2 armies facing off. I use “Word in your Ear” to push the Hormagaunts on the left 6” back (after this picture was taken).

He set up in a classic 5th edition style. His little bugs are in front of his warriors, and they are in front of the hive tyrant and carnifexs giving them all a 4+ cover save.

Turn #1

Tyranid Turn #1

Tyranid player goes first, and he moves out.

SoB Turn #1
My turn! Well, he sure does have a lot of little bugs…let’s see how many synapse creatures I can kill!

The Exorcists kill is hive tyrant, and everthing else unload on his warrior squad on the right killing all but one of his warriors.

A better view. There is a gap in the carnifexs where the hive tyrant used to be, and he is missing some of his warriors.

Turn #2

Tyranid Turn #2

The swarm moves closer. He moves his warriors to try to get them behind some cover, but the squad is too big to hide.

SoB Turn #2

I gun down the rest of his warriors, getting rid of his synapse.

Turn #3

Tyranid Turn #3

He has to roll now to move, and he ends up with Gaunts running all over the place, but he has some brave ones.

SoB Turn #3
It is starting to get late in the game so I start to move some units forward. He also has some gaunts getting closer than what I am not comfortable with, and I have some SoB kill most of them.

Turn #4

Tyranid Turn #4
He guns down some of my sisters on the left, and then charges me with his rippers.

SoB Turn #4
I move forward to get closer to the objectives.

At the end of the phase, his rippers do more wounds to the sisters and they fail their morale roll and the SoB squad and the Cannoness run off of the table.

Turn #5

Tyranid Turn #5
He rolls well enough to charge his 3 guants in the forest into my Storm Troopers on the right. His rippers charge my Inq.

SoB Turn #5
I move forward to get on the objectives, and his stupid guants beat my Storm Troopers in assault, and they run away.

This is how the game ended because of time. Like all games over the weekend when you play 2000 points in 2 hours you are lucky to get to turn #5.

End game
He made the morale roll with his hormaguants on the objective to the left holding that, I have 2 objectives, and one objective was contested.

All-in-all it was a good game. I thought I had this one in the bag when I wiped out his synapse, but he is a good player, and still almost beat or at least tied me.

A bad table to be a tyranid. Not hiding his tyrant was a huge error likewise with the warriors.Using his carnifexes to form a living wall would have helped. Still it was a good game and grats on the win.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

Nice Report. Well done on the win

I would like to question the tactics behind deployment of the tyranid player

Well played. I rarely get to play against Tyranids and would have ended up trying to shred whatever got closest (IE: little bugs). Your method proved to be more effective. Tyranids vs. Mechanized-tough with the Glancing rules.

Anticipating the other battle reports. I agree, 2000 points in 2 hours is not enough time. Locally, we alot 2 1/2 hours per match and it seems to work out ok.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Hulksmash should be along shortly to give his opinion of the game.

I think I was the only one who went for his synapse the whole weekend, with everyone else shooting at the little bugs.

When he posted his list on here I thought I could take him. Tyranids have lost all of their anti-tank in 5th edition with the loss of the venom cannon. A few strength 8 barbed stranglers are not going to cut it against a mech army.

2 hours for a 2000 point game was ridiculous. All my games ended on turn #5, and Smart Alex (on this board) played horde orks and only got to turn #3 in each game. If I would have known that we were going to have 2 hour rounds, I would not have wasted my time and my money on this event and would have gone to the So Cal Slaughter.

Thanks Allan, i remember the terrain at broadside was really cool looking. We played 2k last year, but it was 4th ed. MEQ land. I agree that TO's need to get on board with longer game times, especially if they want to push up the game sizes like that.

doesn't look like many dakka-ites went, yours is the only batrep i've seen so far. Looking forward to the rest of them.

Few things to add

Thanks Blackmoor for typing up the report for our game so I wouldn't have to do it.

So here we go:

1) With an actual midsized Tyrannid horde spearhead is one of the nastiest set-ups to deal with, especially against a shooty list like Allans.

2) The actual set-up is one of the few ways of making sure that everything has cover. In hindsight I should have placed the Hive Tyrant behind the wall to keep him from being shot for at least 2 turns before moving up. It would have kept my gaunts in the game longer. In my defense even though I knew it was possible to kill them all in just 2 turns but it was a case of seeing is believing since it hadn't happened in any of the games i'd played with the list yet.

3) I mixed up my instictive behavior rule and rolled for units that I just would have had go to ground if i'd had the choice. That mistake cost me 2 of my gaunt squads
as they ran off objectives. Allowing Allan to focus his firepower better.

4) Allan was one of only 2 players to go after my synapse all weekend though in fairness I did play 2 tyrannid players in my 5 games and they couldn't have shot them up anyway.

5) The Hormaguants were my heroes, passing 4 leadership tests to hold the objective and to kill the Callidus.

6) Not related to our game as we rolled for it and ours would have ended anyway but it was posted as 2 1/2 rounds on the website but they called all games at 2 hours and i'm pretty sure one of them they called at 1 3/4 hours. This severely affected my later games and is a reason I won't be attending next year (along with their version of "comp" scoring).

All in all it was one of my toughest games of the weekend (except for my last game, a KP mission against a Templar army w/2 Crusaders :( ) and allowed me to rethink my some of my tactics when playing a spearhead deployement.

So your not gonna be at the SoCal Slaughter Allan? Anyone else going? Just curious

Great photos Blackmoor. This batrep reminded me of your game versus Shep from Vegas last year. Very shrewd to go after the synapse creatures early on.

What was the deal with the 'Comp' scoring?

Sent you a detailed pm lordhat. But the short version is it was very arbitrairy and no explaination was given when I asked for the reasons. And they are still using the 2 year ago format for soft scores which was mildly annoying.

Might as well post it for everyone so people can judge whether to attend next year.

The website pointed out that they would have a judge do an initial comp score between 0-6. Based on that is where you would start the tournement so the "harder" armies would play each other. This part I had no problem with.

The part I had a problem with is that Allan and I both recieved 4/12 (apparently it was two judges which they didn't tell us and made the initial comp worth twice as much) and were at the lowest table in the hall to start. When I asked later and was informed of my score I ask the judge why and after dancing and saying it was an average score (which it wasn't since we were at the bottom) told me that I had 6 MC's. That was the sole basis for the scoring as I'm sure the 3 Exorcists was the sole reason for Allans score. If your going to make comp worth the difference between a win and a loss then it needs to be less arbitrary.

This combined with the poor communication, last years soft score format (prefer the checklist), and the shortened rounds I'm not going to be attending next year. Especially if the SoCal Slaughter is within a month like it is this year

Now don't get me wrong, i had a great time against all of my opponents. This was just a case of the organizers hurting the event for me, not the players.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I will post one more (game #4 that I lost to the eventual tournament winner) because it was a very tactical battle and it has the most to offer.

Game #2 was against mostly footslogging Tau and I just blew them off of the table.

Game #3 was against Ultramarines and he held his army in reserve until the bottom of turn #2 and just walked up to the objectives. My rolling very bad and the game ending early on turn #5 made is a one-sided affair in his favor.

Game #4 was the highlight of the tournament.

Game #5 was me just shooting up a Blood Angels army that came on piecemeal.

This is a situation where I really hate to say I told you so. They got me last year because I had two monoliths. They didn't look at the list overall, they just glance and say 'oh he spammed MCs'.

I knew they were going to ding you, I was just hoping they wouldn't. The feedback is coming in about broadside. I like that its so geographically convenient, and feb was a good month to have it. But 2k points in 2 hours just isn't acceptable, and now that we have soft score checklists from the GTs, using an abstract 0-6 soft score seems a little medeival. They can't make their comp restrictions clear enough without a checklist, so people walk in with misconceptions.

Looking forward to game 4.
